The recent news from Lodhran district highlights a significant development in the education sector. After an eight-month delay, the salaries of 77 college teacher interns from 12 colleges have finally been released. This resolution comes as a relief to these interns who had been facing financial difficulties due to the prolonged delay in payment.
The issue of delayed payments for college teaching interns (CTIs) is not unique to Lodhran but has also been reported in other districts like Attock, where CTIs faced similar challenges with stipend payments.
The Punjab government’s initiatives, such as hiring CTIs, aim to address staffing shortages in colleges across the province.
As reproted, the payment of salaries for these teachers had been delayed since July 2014 due to the Higher Education Department’s failure to provide a hard copy of the budget.
Despite multiple appeals through various channels, including the Chief Minister’s Portal and the deputy commissioners’ open courts, the issue remained unresolved due to the absence of the budget document.
Lodhran Deputy Commissioner Dr. Lubna Nazir raised the matter with the Secretary of the Higher Education Commission.
With the implementation of an online budgeting system across the province, she collaborated with the Deputy Secretary to ensure the issuance of a hard copy of the budget letter (SO(B&F) 4-33/2024/25) amounting to Rs327.412 million.
This step facilitated the processing of salaries and other payments for all 12 colleges in the district through the Finance Department.
With the hard copy now available, other districts in Punjab can also move forward with their budget allocations.
