Super Bowl Halftime Performer Detained for Unplanned Flag Protest

During the Super Bowl LIX halftime show on Sunday, a performer in Kendrick Lamar’s act was detained after displaying the Palestinian flag. The flag had the words “Gaza” and “Sudan” inscribed on them.

The individual, later identified as New Orleans resident Zül-Qarnain Nantambu, climbed onto a vehicle used as a prop during Lamar’s performance and raised the flags before being escorted off by security.

The NFL confirmed that Nantambu was part of the 400-member field cast for the halftime show but acted independently without prior arrangement with event organizers.

Despite initial concerns about potential charges, no arrest or summons was issued by New Orleans police.

The protest highlighted ongoing humanitarian crises in Gaza and Sudan. In Gaza, extensive destruction has occurred due to Israeli airstrikes following Hamas attacks in October 2023. In Sudan, civil conflict between rival generals has led to significant humanitarian issues since April 2023.
