Amazon Prime Video has officially renewed The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for a third season, with filming set to begin in spring 2025.
This announcement comes on Thursday as part of Amazon’s ongoing commitment to its five-season plan for the series.
Production of the new season is expected to take place at Shepperton Studios in the UK. While the pre-production is currently underway, and while filming will start soon, fans can expect a significant wait before the new season airs.
Given the extensive production and post-production periods typical for such epic fantasy series, Season 3 is anticipated to premiere in early 2027.
The upcoming season promises significant developments in Middle-earth’s Second Age narrative. It will focus on Sauron creating the One Ring during the height of his power and conflict with the Elves. This pivotal moment sets up crucial events that shape Middle-earth’s history.
Returning directors Charlotte Brändström (Shōgun) and Sanaa Hamri (The Wheel of Time) are set to helm multiple episodes alongside newcomer Stefan Schwartz (The Boys, The Walking Dead). J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay continue as showrunners, supported by executive producers Lindsey Weber and others.
Despite some mixed reviews regarding adaptation choices and declining viewership since Season 1, Amazon remains committed to bringing this ambitious vision of J.R.R. Tolkien’s world to life over its planned five seasons.
Fans are eagerly anticipating how these storylines will unfold as more details emerge about Season 3’s plot developments and character arcs.
