It’s a canon event this time of year: A pair of young people have matched on their favourite dating app and have planned a date to escape the anxiety of the romantic peer pressure that Valentine’s Day brings. This couple could be enjoy discussing art, and looking effortlessly cool and edgy – or perhaps,
prefer indulging in the finer things in life, like sipping on aesthetically pleasing coffee. Both are perfect for their Instagram Story.
Luckily, all of our protagonists are students at King’s College London, and their days revolve around Strand. Through their plans, you can find inspiration for your own romantic dates, discovering some of the most interesting spots in the area. Convenient, isn’t it?
Let’s see where they went.
1. Fed by Plants
You could be vegan, but find eating the only plant-based option at a basic restaurant chain utterly boring. That’s why Fed by Plants is the perfect option.
It’s a vegan restaurant in Gabriel’s Wharf, conveniently located between Strand Campus and Wilkins Campus. You could share a portion of nachos, followed by a vegan take on fish and chips. Perfect.
The vibe is laid-back and charming, and you will feel good about your ethical food choices afterwards. Win-win.
2. Bella Italia, Strand
Ah, Bella Italia. A great post-lecture cosy pizzeria, plus Italian cuisine is always a safe (and stylish) choice.
Plus, the aesthetic potential for the Instagram Story is undeniable. Yes, we know it’s a chain but the food is incredible so we had to include it, especially at it’s a two minute walk from Strand campus.
We’d also recommend calling ahead to avoid any queues, as it’s a very popular place.
The atmosphere was clean and inviting, and the food was fantastic. You will love the tiramisu just like your loyal story likers love you.
3. Tate Modern
Here you can immerse yourself in thought-provoking pieces and engage in deep philosophical discussions.
After the Mike Kelley exhibition, you could realise you are both huge fans of Sonic Youth. Cool coincidence? Not really – you made it up to impress your date.
4. Courtauld Gallery
Want to show off your extensive art history knowledge, but have a class at 4pm? Conveniently, The Courtauld Gallery is right inside Somerset House—and it’s free for King’s College students!
In this historically significant gallery in the heart of Strand, you can take the opportunity to give your date an in-depth lecture on every detail of Van Gogh’s self-portraits.
5. London Bridge
What’s better than a cinematic stroll across London Bridge? It’s like something out of a decadent indie film.
Just watch out for tourists!
6. Victoria Embankment Gardens
Before heading home, you take a short walk toward the river and find yourselves at Victoria Embankment Gardens. Sitting on a bench, enjoy a peaceful moment, chatting while watching the water flow. A perfect, relaxing way to wind down your date.
It’s like something out of a romcom.
7. Ronnie Scott’s
If you’re opting for an evening date and consider yourself a huge jazz nerd, you have to visit Ronnie Scott’s together.
Every night, top international jazz artists perform at this legendary club, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a drink under the noble excuse of engaging in an artistic activity.
8. Prince Charles Cinema
Perhaps you want to engage in a thought-provoking activity on your date. Well, if you do, head to Prince Charles Cinema, known for screening art-house films—from cult classics to new indie releases. Just don’t yap through the entire film or your situationship is sure to ghost you afterwards.
9. Mrs Riot
To wrap up a (perhaps) long, and intellectual, date, you could discuss existential dread over drinks. Spot of choice? Mrs. Riot, a gorgeous punk-inspired bar in Covent Garden.
Between deep philosophical debates, find time to hit the karaoke room, and belt out your favourite emo anthems together.
10. Dovetail Bar
Finally, end your night at Dovetail Bar, a cosy cocktail bar with an intimate atmosphere. They serve a range of creative takes on classic cocktails, making for a perfect setting to relax and reflect on the evening. Of course, capture the vibes in a well-curated Instagram Story slide—because what’s a date without a little social media flex?
Now, thanks to this diverse Valentine’s itinerary, you’ve got plenty of ideas for your own romantic (or just fun) day out.
Happy Valentine’s Day—even if you won’t be going on a date!
