Stephen Fry has revealed he’d ‘certainly consider’ a role in the Harry Potter TV series, and even knows who he could play.

Rumours have been swirling over who could be taking on the leading roles and stepping into the likes of Emma WatsonDaniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint’s shoes, with further details about the wizarding adaption slowly being released.

HBO confirmed in 2023 that JK Rowling’s books were being adapted for the small screen, with an open casting call announced in September.

It’s since been rumoured that John Lithgow is in ‘final talks’ to play Albus Dumbledore, though names like Sirius Black actor Gary Oldman, Jude Law and Peter Everett have been thrown into the mix.

Some fans even want Stephen to play the beloved headmaster, but the 67-year-old has teased he has another role in mind.

When asked by Metro if he’d up to star in the upcoming series and whether he had already been approached, he told us: ‘Well, I’d certainly consider it! I’d consider anything that’s interesting.

‘No, as far as I know, I haven’t been – better check with my agent that that they run it past.’

He went on: ‘I was reading that John Lithgow was going to play Dumbledore, which is wonderful casting. I’ve worked with him, he’s a terrific actor, absolutely brilliant. He’s almost made for [Dumbledore’s] little glasses.’

‘So I don’t know who I would play, I’m too old for anybody in that word, aren’t I?’ he laughed.

‘Maybe I could be Minister for Magic, or something like that? Cornelius Fudge… For all I know they’ve already cast him.’

He then joked: ‘They’re doing seven episodes for each book, is that right? So 49 episodes – that’s a big series… Or I could be the Fat Lady in the portrait!’

Stephen was speaking at the Newport Beach Film Festival‘s UK and Ireland Honours event at Raffles London at The OWO, where he received the ICON Award, celebrating his over 25 years of experience and contributions to the film industry.

The original Harry Potter films saw Richard Harris and Michael Gambon portray Professor Dumbledore, while Robert Hardy played the Minister of Magic.

HBO Max confirmed the series was officially in the works in 2023, saying: ‘Your Hogwarts letter is here.

‘Max has ordered the first ever #HarryPotter scripted television series, a faithful adaptation of the iconic books. #StreamOnMax.’

HBO also teased that the show will span for a decade, with each season being based off each of the seven books in the novel franchise and boasting an entirely new cast.
