Bollywood Music Giants Take on OpenAI in Indian Copyright Battle

Bollywood music labels, including T-SeriesSaregama, and Sony Music, are seeking to join a copyright lawsuit against OpenAI in India. The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI has improperly used their sound recordings to train AI models without permission, violating their copyrights.

This action follows a similar lawsuit filed by the Indian news agency ANI last year, which accused OpenAI of using its content without permission for training AI models.

T-Series, Saregama, and Sony Music are among the prominent labels involved. T-Series is one of India’s largest record labels, releasing about 2,000 songs annually. Saregama is over a century old and owns iconic Indian music collections featuring legendary singers like Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar.

The music labels are concerned that AI systems can extract lyrics, compositions, and sound recordings from the internet without permission. This issue is seen as crucial not only for the Indian music industry but also globally.

The case is ongoing in the Delhi High Court with a hearing scheduled for February 21. Legal experts have differing opinions on whether OpenAI’s use qualifies as fair use under Indian copyright laws.

Similar lawsuits have been filed in other countries like Germany and the U.S., highlighting growing legal challenges faced by OpenAI worldwide regarding copyright infringement allegations/

OpenAI has defended its actions by claiming adherence to fair-use principles when utilizing publicly available data for developing its AI models. However, it faces opposition from various media groups and publishers who argue that such practices violate intellectual property rights.
