Leicester City have set an embarrassing new Premier League record under head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy after the 4-0 loss to Brentford.

The Foxes hosted the Bees at the King Power Stadium on Friday night, in desperate need of a victory, with Van Nistelrooy’s team fighting relegation.

But Leicester suffered another abysmal performance under the former Manchester United striker, with goals from Yoane Wissa, Bryan Mbeumo, Christian Nørgaard and Fábio Carvalho securing three points for Brentford.

The result marked Leicester’s sixth straight home defeat without scoring in the Premier League – the longest ever run of home losses without a goal by any side within a single season in English top-flight history.

‘The level between us and Brentford was simply too big after the first 10-15 minutes,’ Van Nistelrooy told the BBC after the historic defeat.

‘They were solid. They are in a place we are far off that and we have to acknowledge it.

‘We had a very positive start to the game with some good attacks and good pressure but on the other hand Brentford were lethal.

‘I think at half-time 3-0 down we said we wanted to go out and at least show something. We felt the levels were simply too big between the teams.

‘Is it always fight? Of course we keep fighting and keep going but we have to perform to the maximum of our capabilities, only fighting is not going to get you anywhere. You also need the quality on the pitch at the right time.

‘You have to recover from this first of all as a head coach you take responsibility first and foremost. Then rest and come back with new energy to lift the place where necessary.

‘Tomorrow is a new day and we start again. It starts with yourself, reflect and recover and collectively we have to move on.’

Wes Morgan, who captained Leicester to the Premier League title at odds of 5000-1 in 2016, described his former club as ‘fragile’ after the match.

‘The next few games – West Ham, Chelsea, Manchester United, it is not good,’ Morgan told Sky Sports.

‘When you are fragile at the back you need to be strong. You need to stay firm, stand strong and keep going. There is a real frailty in the team.

‘When you conceded the goals they did, you are on the back foot and that’s really disappointing.’
