Rushdie suffered severe injuries, including blindness in one eye and lasting nerve damage. He was the key witness during the trial, detailing his life-threatening injuries and recovery process. In addition to attempted murder in the second degree, Matar was also convicted of assault for wounding Henry Reese, who was present on stage with Rushdie.

Matar faces up to 25 years in prison for his crimes and is scheduled to be sentenced on April 23. He also faces federal charges related to terrorism allegations linked to Hezbollah.

Throughout his trial, Matar maintained a not-guilty plea but showed little reaction upon hearing the verdict.
