Ruth Langsford has jumped to the defence of her ex Eamonn Holmes in a moment that might come as a surprise to some fans following their split.

In May last year, the former couple – one of the most high-profile duos on TV – announced that they had separated after 14 years of marriage.

The former This Morning co-hosts were said at the time to be ‘in the process of divorcing’ and were aiming to ‘keep things amicable’, with Eamonn having since sparked up a new relationship.

On Monday’s instalment of Loose Women, the panel were discussing Holly Willoughby’s appearance on Saturday night’s episode of Michael McIntyre’s Big Show, which saw her reunite with the midwife Fredette who delivered her daughter 13 years ago.

Myleene Klass became emotional as she spoke about the incredibly close connection she formed with her midwife, Pippa Nightingale, who delivered her son after the musician suffered four miscarriages.

Ruth then opened up about her experience with her midwife, who she stayed in touch with after she gave birth to her son Jack, 22, in 2002.

‘I remember my midwife Maria who sadly passed, but we remained friends, she came to Jack’s birthday parties when he was young, and I just remember when Holly said [Fredette] said to her, “We’re going to breathe this baby out,” I remember just feeling that Maria and I birthed Jack,’ the 64-year-old said.

‘I mean, Eamonn was there, and he did what he could and things at that moment.’

At that point, Myleene, 46, let out a large laugh, and then as some members of the audience also chuckled, Ruth leapt to Eamonn’s defence.

‘No no, he did. He did,’ she said, facing them.

Turning back to her fellow panelists, she continued: ‘But at that moment, I was relying on her, you know when you have your eyes closed, I could hear her talking.’

As Myleene emphasised the ‘trust’ between mothers giving birth and their midwives, Ruth recalled how she remembered ‘focusing on her voice’.

Earlier this year, Ruth shared that she was ‘embracing’ being single after her ‘painful’ break-up from Eamonn.

The pair began dating in 1996, before 14 years before they exchanged their vows in 2010.

‘Relationship breakdowns are very difficult – marriage, friendship, whatever it is – but you just deal with it and you have to move on,’ she told Woman & Home.

‘You can either let yourself crumble or you pick yourself up and get on with life. It’s a choice.’

Since their separation, Eamonn has been pictured several times with his girlfriend Katie Alexander, 42, with the pair going on a Mediterranean cruise together last year.

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
