The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has initiated a licensing regime for VPN service providers in Pakistan. This move aims to ensure that VPNs are used for legitimate purposes, enhancing data security and regulatory compliance.
The PTA has introduced a Class License framework for VPN service providers. This allows local companies to apply for permits to provide VPN services, addressing the issue of unregistered VPNs.
Licensed VPN providers must comply with Pakistan’s laws and regulations, enabling authorities to monitor VPN traffic and address security concerns.
Licensed providers are required to provide information to authorities upon request and may need to install “Lawful Interception” equipment for national security purposes.
Companies pay a license fee of Rs300,000 for nationwide services and Rs100,000 for provincial services. Licenses are valid for 15 years and can be extended.
“As part of this process, PTA has approved the applications of two companies for the grant of Class Licences to provide VPN services,” said a press release issued by the telecom authority on Monday.
“This initiative enables businesses to utilise VPNs for lawful purposes, ensuring data security, privacy, and regulatory compliance while promoting transparency.
“PTA remains committed to supporting organisations in meeting their connectivity needs responsibly,” it said.
Entities offering VPN and related services are required to obtain this license to operate legally within Pakistan.
