The United States Central Command (US Centcom) has thanked Pakistan for its assistance in capturing the prime suspect behind the deadly 2021 suicide bombing at Kabul Airport.
In a post on its official Urdu-language account on X, US Centcom recognized Pakistan’s role in the arrest of Mohammad Sharifullah, also known as Jafar, an alleged Daesh-Khorasan (ISIS-K) operative.
“We appreciate Pakistan’s cooperation in apprehending Sharifullah, the main suspect in the attack on the Abbey Gate of Kabul Airport, and for working with the United States to ensure justice,” the statement reads.
The recent arrest of Mohammad Sharifullah, a senior commander of the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), has highlighted the ongoing counterterrorism cooperation between the United States and Pakistan.
Sharifullah, who is believed to have planned the 2021 Kabul airport bombing that killed 13 U.S. service members, was apprehended near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border following intelligence provided by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
The U.S. has expressed gratitude to Pakistan for its role in capturing Sharifullah. President Donald Trump thanked Pakistan for its efforts, acknowledging the country’s contribution to counter-terrorism in the region.
Sharifullah was captured in a joint operation involving Pakistani security forces and U.S. intelligence. He has been extradited to the U.S. to face charges related to providing material support to a terrorist organization.
Sharifullah has been charged with violating U.S. terrorism laws and is expected to appear in a Virginia court. He has admitted to his involvement in the Kabul bombing and other attacks during FBI interrogations.
