Thousands of festivals are celebrated every year in India, the country of festivals. Here people of every community celebrate their festivals with great enthusiasm. The festival of Holi celebrated by Hindus is one such festival which is celebrated with great pomp and show by people of every community. This festival teaches us that there should not be any kind of discrimination in life, because when colors can make everyone equal, then why not humans? This festival teaches us that we should forget the bitterness of the mind and always adopt new freshness in relationships and live happily with each other.
This time the festival of Holi will be celebrated on 13th and 14th March. On the first day there is Holika Dahan which is known as Choti Holi and on the second day there is the festival of colors, which is called Dhulendi. During this time people play colors together and celebrate happiness.
Rangwali Holi is also celebrated in the memory of the holy love of Radha-Krishna. According to the legend, once Bal-Gopal asked mother Yashoda why he himself was not fair like Radha. Yashoda jokingly told him that by applying color on Radha’s face, Radhaji’s complexion will also become like Kanhaiya’s. After this, Kanha played Holi with colors with Radha and the gopis and since then this festival is being celebrated as the festival of colors.
This story is associated with Prahlad, the ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, and Holika, the sister of the demon king Hiranyakashyap. Hiranyakashyap, who considered himself invincible, considered Lord Vishnu as his enemy. But his son Prahlad was a devotee of Vishnu since childhood. When Hiranyakashyap tried to stop Prahlad from Vishnu Bhakti and failed, he ordered his sister Holika to play a trick.
Holika was blessed with the boon of not burning in fire, so she entered the fire carrying Prahlad in her lap. But by the grace of God, Prahlad survived safely, while Holika herself was burnt in the fire. This incident became a symbol of the victory of good over evil and since then the tradition of Holika Dahan has been going on on the festival of Holi.
This festival is celebrated with great pomp in the Braj region. Lathmar Holi of Barsana is especially very famous. Holi is also celebrated for 15 days in Mathura and Vrindavan.
