Cheltenham Festival 2024: Day One
Cheltenham is underway today (Picture: Michael Steele/Getty Images)

The Cheltenham Festival 2025 is underway this afternoon with a stacked first day of action in store on Champion Day.

Seven races will take place starting with the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, renamed in the memory of the late Michael O’Sullivan.

The talented young rider tragically died aged 24 in February as a result of injuries suffered in a fall at Thurles racecourse.

O’Sullivan won the same race aboard Marine Nationale in 2023 and it will mark a sombre moment on opening race day in tribute to the Irishman.

Six other races will follow across the afternoon.

Here is your full guide to day one at Cheltenham Festival with the race card, latest odds and betting tips.

Cheltenham Festival Day 1 betting tips

Speaking to Paddy Power, racing legend Ruby Walsh has named his two tips for the first day of action.

Brighterdaysahead: 15/8 (Champion Hurdle)

‘She blew me away in Leopardstown – I was watching it thinking, you’re going too fast, you’re going too fast, you’re going too fast the whole way, and all of a sudden, they were going too fast for the pacemaker, he falls in a hole going to the third last, King Of Kingsfield, the next minute the mare picks up, heads on to the second last and away with her off the bend again. It’s the one hurdle performance this year that you went ‘Jesus.’

Beyond Your Dreams: 6/1 (Fred Winter)

‘I’ll have to go for a price so I’ll go for Beyond Your Dreams [in the Fred Winter]. I think the obvious ones early in the card – Kopek Des Bordes [Supreme], Majborough [Arkle] but look if you’re going for something at some bit of a price.’
