Mngqithi explains decision after Sundowns exit

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Manqoba Mngqithi has revealed he had other offers other than Golden Arrows.

WHY THE GOLDEN ARROWS DECISION

Following a shaky start to the season with Sundowns, Betway Premiership giants Kabo Yellow made a shock decision to part ways with Mngqithi before announcing Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso. Mngqithi later joined his former club, Golden Arrows, last month.

“Most of the clubs that showed interest wanted me for the next season. One of the clubs showed interest at the last minute, but unfortunately, I had already received the call from sis (Mato Madlala),” Mngqithi told Ukhozi FM, as per Vodacom Soccer.

“It was going to be difficult for me to go there (to that club) after being asked by Arrows to come and help. The last thing I want to see is Arrows in trouble when I have a way to help them. I made the decision to come back because I felt it was the most urgent situation.

The former Sundowns mentor concluded: “It didn’t take me long to decide. When they asked me to come, I had to help. This team gave me an opportunity when nobody else would have, so I owe them. I have to do whatever they need me to do.”

SUNDOWNS COACH MIGUEL CARDOSO SENDS A MESSAGE TO THE PSL AND SAFA

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso believes local officials need VAR support.

Once more, local match officials are under the spotlight after the latest series of controversial decisions in the Golden Arrows vs Sundowns game and again in the Stellenbosch FC and Kaizer Chiefs match.

“I don’t like to personalise things with referees, I will never do that because I think the coach has more to lose than to win when he personalises the question, regarding [the Arrows game] you are the ones who should defend your football,” the Sundowns coach said via iDiski Times.

“You have a social impact and impact the ones who are responsible in football, it’s up to you to highlight what is good or bad – at the same time, the conditions of football, the level of coaches increase, or should increase, the level of players increase, so the level of referees should increase.

“In general, it’s not only in South Africa, it would be very important that VAR would be [implemented] in South Africa, it would help the referees, they are human beings so when they make a mistake in a game, it’s normal, it can happen.

“When it is too many mistakes in one match, it’s not comfortable, and it’s up to you [media] to look at the match and see what happens, because in a normal game we would have won, and it cost us two points that can be very important in a championship fight and morale of the team,” the Sundowns mentor concluded.
