Police launch investigation into suspended Reform MP Rupert Lowe

Reform UK's new MP Rupert Lowe attends a presentation of their programme in London on July 5, 2024, a day after Britain held a general election. As of 1200 GMT on Friday, the Labour party had won 412 seats in the House of Commons with only two results left to declare, giving it a majority of more than 170. The Conservative Party won just 121 seats -- a record low -- with the right-wing vote apparently spliced by Nigel Farage's anti-immigration Reform UK party. An investigation has been launched by the Metropolitan Police into Rupert Lowe, the MP who was suspended by Reform UK last week.

Lowe was reported to the police by his party on Friday over alleged ‘verbal threats’ he made before Christmas last year.

He was also accused of bullying people in his office.

The Great Yarmouth MP has strongly denied all the claims made against him, calling for Reform leader Nigel Farage to ‘urgently apologise, retract and correct the record’ in a post on X this morning.

This afternoon, a Met spokesperson said an investigation had been launched ‘into an allegation of a series of verbal threats made by a 67 year old man.’

It continued: ‘Our original statement referred to alleged threats made in December 2024. We would like to clarify that when this matter was reported to us it referred to a series of alleged threats made between December 2024 and February 2025.

‘Further enquiries are ongoing at this stage.’

In a statement posted to X, Lowe said his legal team had not yet been contacted by the police.

He wrote: ‘I have instructed lawyers to represent me in this matter.

‘My lawyers have made contact with the Met Police, and have made them aware of my willingness to co-operate in any necessary investigation.

‘My lawyers have not yet received any contact from the Police. It is highly unusual for the Police to disclose anything to the media at this stage of an investigation.

‘I remain unaware of the specific allegations, but in any event, I deny any wrongdoing.

‘The allegations are entirely untrue.’

Allegations about Lowe’s behaviour exploded into the open the day after a Daily Mail interview was published in which he was heavily critical of Farage, describing him as a ‘messianic figure’ who ‘has to learn to delegate’.
