Pakistan Ranks Third in Global Pollution List for 2024

Pakistan has been ranked third in the list of the most polluted countries for 2024, according to IQAir’s annual World Air Quality Report.

According to Swiss air technology company IQAir’s 2024 World Air Quality Report, Chad topped the rankings for the most polluted country, followed by Bangladesh, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and then India.

This ranking highlights the severe pollution challenges faced by Pakistan, particularly during its recent smog season. The situation in Punjab was declared a “calamity,” with widespread health issues affecting millions due to high levels of particulate matter.

Meanwhile, India’s cities continue to dominate the global pollution rankings. Thirteen of the world’s top 20 most polluted cities are located in India, with Byrnihat in Assam being the most polluted city globally. Delhi remains the most polluted capital city worldwide.

Despite a slight improvement in overall national rankings, India still faces significant air quality challenges, with its average PM2.5 concentration being ten times the World Health Organization’s recommended limit.

The health impacts of air pollution are substantial in both countries. In India, air pollution is linked to a reduction in life expectancy by approximately 5.2 years, while in Pakistan, the high levels of pollution exacerbate respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

Both nations are working towards implementing policies to reduce emissions and improve air quality, but the challenges remain formidable.
