Dr Patrice Motsepe re-elected CAF president until 2029!

Mamelodi Sundowns owner Dr Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected as CAF president for the second term.

Motsepe was re-elected into CAF’s highest position unopposed on Wednesday, 12 March in Cairo.

The 63-year-old had announced his intention to stand again for the CAF presidency in October 2024.

And given significant improvements in African football competitions, especially financially since he took over, Motsepe was most likely to be re-elected.

Meanwhile, there was also a vote to decide the six African representatives on the FIFA Council and CAF Executive Committee.

And perhaps the highlight was the unopposed election of Cameroon Football Federation president Samuel Eto’o as a CAF ExCo member.

In 2024, Eto’o was suspended last year by both FIFA and CAf for violating disciplinary regulations.

In September, the four-time African Footballer of the Year was banned from attending six international matches involving Cameroon.

However, the ban was lifted on appeal, and last week, Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld Eto’o’s appeal to be included in the list of candidates for a role in CAF.

The CAF ExCo consists of Eto’o (Cameroon), Mustapha Ishola Raji (Liberia), Bestine Kazadi Ditabala (DR Congo), Wallace Karia (Tanzania), Kurt Simeon-Okraku (Ghana) and Sadi Walid (Algeria).

The six African representatives on the FIFA Council are Abo Rida (Egypt) and Fouzi Lekjaa (Morocco), Kanizat Ibrahim (Comoros), Hamidou Djibrilla Hima (Niger), Ahmed Yahya (Mauritania) and Souleymane Waberi (Djibouti).
