Muhammad Riaz, a talented Pakistani footballer, recently gained widespread attention after being forced to sell jalebis in his hometown of Hangu due to financial difficulties.
Muhammad Riaz, 29, a standout talent at the 2018 Asian Games, once proudly represented Pakistan on the football field.
His struggles began when his departmental team, K-Electric, was disbanded following a ban on departmental sports by the previous government. This situation left many athletes without financial support or career stability.
“I waited years for change,” he said. “With no income, I had to find an honest living.”
“Our society doesn’t value sports,” he said, adding, “Without departmental support, how can young players chase their dreams when they see me selling jalebis?”
In response to his plight, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif invited Riaz to the Prime Minister’s House and provided him with a cheque for PKR 2.5 million, along with a job offer.
Additionally, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister, Ali Amin Gandapur, contributed PKR 1 million in financial assistance.
The Pakistan Football League (PFL) also stepped in, announcing a cash prize of PKR 1 million for Riaz and offering him a key position within the league. The PFL aims to revive football in Pakistan and plans to provide international training opportunities for Riaz and other aspiring footballers.
Riaz expressed gratitude for the support and pledged to work with the PFL to ensure that no other player faces similar neglect.
