Exeter University subjects among the best in the world across various academic disciplines

A new league table ranks the University of Exeter’s subjects among the best in the world across various academic disciplines.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 features 55 individual subjects spanning five broad field areas, including arts and humanities, engineering and technology, life sciences and medicine, natural sciences, and social sciences and management.

This year’s rankings represent the most extensive to date, incorporating 171 institutions that were not featured in the 2024 edition.

In the field of arts and humanities, which includes the broader subject areas of history, modern languages, and performing arts, Exeter ranked 90th in the world in 2025, rising four places since 2024 and retaining its position inside the top 100. Additionally, Exeter ranked 20th in the UK for arts and humanities.

In the 2025 rankings, the University of Exeter ranked 333rd globally and 31st in the UK for engineering and technology. Life sciences and medicine secured 152nd place worldwide and 21st in the UK. Meanwhile, natural sciences ranked 209th globally and 20th in the UK, while social sciences and management placed 183rd worldwide and 23rd in the UK.

Exeter also ranked 19th globally for engineering, mineral, and mining, 36th for environmental sciences, 37th for sports-related subjects, and 39th for geology.

Exeter ranked 40th globally for geography, 44th for earth and marine sciences, and 45th for both archaeology and classics and ancient history. Additionally, English language placed 47th, while politics achieved a global ranking of 80th.

Anatomy and physiology, theology, divinity and religious studies, history, and hospitality and leisure management were four subjects that ranked between 51st and 100th in the global table.
