Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal has expressed concern over the continuous presence of the polio virus in Karachi’s sewage samples, emphasizing that the complete eradication of polio is a national priority.
On Sunday, the federal minister visited the Provincial Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for Polio in Karachi. Provincial Coordinator Irshad Ali Sodhar briefed him on the current polio situation, ongoing vaccination campaigns, and the challenges faced.
Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal stressed the need for a modern and integrated strategy to achieve a polio-free Pakistan and directed the utilization of all resources for this cause. The federal government pledged full cooperation with Sindh in this effort.
The federal health minister requested a detailed report on families refusing to vaccinate their children.
Mustafa Kamal commended the role of frontline workers and district administration in the national polio eradication campaign and instructed the use of all resources to combat the virus. He expressed concern over four out of six polio cases reported this year being from Sindh.
The minister revealed that 43,000 parents in Sindh are refusing to vaccinate their children, with around 42,000 of them from Karachi. He urged parents to ensure their children receive polio drops during the upcoming national campaign in April and highlighted the importance of community engagement and strengthening vaccination efforts to curb the spread of the virus.
Federal Minister for Health Syed Mustafa Kamal on Wednesday announced that polio eradication would be considered a national responsibility and vowed to take all possible steps during his tenure to make the country free of the virus.
He expressed these views during a visit to the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) for Polio where he chaired a meeting to review the government efforts for polio eradication.
