Fewer Spam Calls: Here’s why things are changing

If you’re tired of spam calls disrupting your day, there’s good news—South Africa is making significant progress in reducing these unwanted interruptions.

According to My Broadband, with help from mobile networks and upcoming regulatory changes, consumers may soon experience fewer unsolicited marketing calls.

Drop in Spam Calls

One of the most promising developments comes from MTN South Africa, which recently noticed a decline in spam calls on its network.

Between July 2023 and December 2024, the mobile operator reported a double-digit reduction in these unwanted calls.

An MTN spokesperson told My Broadband, the drop is due to improved consumer education and advanced monitoring systems that help detect and block suspicious call activity.

Other networks, including Vodacom are also taking steps to curb the issue.

However, many consumers still experience frequent interruptions from telemarketers and scammers, highlighting the need for more comprehensive solutions.

Government Plans a National Opt-Out Registry

To further protect consumers, the South African government is introducing a national opt-out registry for direct marketing.

This initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition, is expected to launch in the 2025/26 financial year.

The system will allow consumers to register their details electronically, effectively blocking marketing calls from companies that use direct marketing strategies.

Businesses engaging in direct marketing will be required to cross-check their contact lists against the registry before making calls.

Once a list has been “cleansed” of registered numbers, it will remain valid for only 30 days, ensuring marketers regularly update their records.

HOW TO STOP PESKY SPAM CALLERS

According to Law for All, South Africans receive an average of 15 spam calls monthly, placing the country fifth globally in spam call prevalence.

These calls often result from companies sharing personal data obtained through online shopping, loyalty programs, or competitions.

To reduce spam calls, try the following tips:

Read the Fine Print

Be cautious when providing contact information; opt out of marketing communications when possible.

Understand Your Rights

The Consumer Protection Act prohibits unsolicited marketing to those who’ve opted out and restricts contact times. The Protection of Personal Information Act also limits direct marketing without consent.

Use Call-Blocking Apps

Apps like Truecaller can identify and block spam numbers.

A Step Towards Better Consumer Protection

The introduction of an opt-out registry aligns with global best practices for reducing unwanted calls.

Countries like the United States and the United Kingdom have similar systems in place, giving consumers more control over who can contact them for marketing purposes.

By enforcing stricter rules for direct marketing and enhancing consumer education, South Africa is moving toward a future with fewer intrusive calls.

However, the effectiveness of these measures will depend on strict enforcement and consumer participation.
