A Kaizer Chiefs legend and former Bafana Bafana star seems to have fallen into some hard times off the field.
Due to the short nature of their careers, footballers are often encouraged to invest while still active and earning well.
Too many riches to rags stories in SA football
There have been many instances in the past where players splurge and live an expensive lifestyle. During these times, understandably, many would not see the end of their money supply coming in a hurry. When you are hot property, playing for a Chiefs, Orlando Pirates or a Mamelodi Sundowns, you might think that will last forever. But often it is players from these clubs who often end up not being able to sustain their lifestyles after their careers.
The latest player to suffer from this fate is former Chiefs and Bafana defender Eric Mathoho. The lanky centre-back was released by Amakhosi after serving the club for over a decade. Since the 2023/24 season he has not been able to find a new club. According to Sunday World he is now feeling the full effects of that, with the bank repossessing his car!
Bank ordered to repossess Mathoho’s car
“The Johannesburg High Court has granted Standard Bank a court order to repossess former Kaizer Chiefs defender Mulomowandau Mathoho’s VW Polo sedan. Mathoho failed to surrender the vehicle to Standard Bank even though he was failing to keep up with his monthly instalments.” Wrote the publication
It would go on to cite the court order that gives permission to the bank to repossess Mathoho’s vehicle.
“You are hereby directed to attach, take into execution, and deliver to the plaintiff a certain: 2019 Volkswagen Polo Sedan GP 1.4 CL from the defendant at [address withheld], that the asset may be handed over to a duly authorised representative of the plaintiff and/or the sheriff of the high court, that the sheriff or duly authorised representative should be authorised to attach the asset wherever it may be found and place the plaintiff in possession thereof for which this shall be your warrant,” it read.
Subsequently owing close R50 000!
It is said that Mathoho was expected to pay R5 000 monthly instalments. But as of September 16 2024, the ex-Chiefs man owed R49 626 to the bank. This is what forced them into action. Amakhosi fans, how do you feel about the situation affecting your club legend? Should players be blamed for a lack of financial responsibility? or should it be the clubs and agents that educate them on the importance of saving and investing?
Who is to blame? player? club? agent?
