Durban pupil passes away on eve of hockey match

It has tragically come to light that the Grade 10 pupil from Glenwood High in Durban had collapsed and died just as the teenage boy was getting ready to take to the field for a hockey match on Tuesday.

The pupil was preparing for the sports game when he stepped away from the warm-up, before collapsing, with paramedics tragically unable to resuscitate him.

“It is with deep sorrow that we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and school community of the Grade 10 pupil from Glenwood High School who tragically passed away while preparing for a hockey match,” stated KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka.

A statement from the KZN Education stated that upon receiving the devastating news, the head of department, Nkosinathi Ngcobo, immediately rushed to the scene alongside the learner’s family, educators and other departmental officials in order to offer support.

“As the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, we recognise the immense grief felt by all who knew him,” the statement continued. “We will continue to work closely with Glenwood High School to ensure that the necessary psychological and emotional support is provided to learners, educators and the bereaved family.”

No further details, or cause of death, are able to be disclosed at this time.

TRAGIC DEATH OF DURBAN PUPIL

In a statement to the boy’s parents and Glenwood community, the principal and school governing body said: “As a community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his immediate family and wish them immense strength during this profoundly difficult time.

“We have engaged with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education to ask for counsellors to be available to the school community.”
