Rele Mofokeng on song as Bafana Bafana put Lesotho to the sword

Relebohile Mofokeng was the standout player as Bafana Bafana secured a 2-0 victory over Lesotho on Friday evening.

Knowing that a win would place them at the top of Group C in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, South Africa started the match slowly, struggling to create meaningful chances in the first half. Mofokeng had the best opportunities during this period but was unable to convert.

In the second half, however, Broos’s men attacked with greater intent and created several chances. Their efforts paid off in the 60th minute when Elias Mokwana made a good run and found Mofokeng, who scored to make it 1-0. Just four minutes later, Jaydam Adams added a second goal, putting Bafana ahead 2-0. Despite having numerous opportunities, Bafana could not score any additional goals.

Mofokeng earned a rare start against Lesotho and took full advantage of the faith that coach Broos showed in him. If he had been more clinical in front of goal, he could have added two or three more to the scoreline. With this victory, Bafana now leads Group C with 10 points after five matches.

Their next challenge is a trip to Ivory Coast to face Benin, where a win would put them in a strong position to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mofokeng is expected to start Tuesday’s match with Percy Tau likely to be benched after another poor outing for Bafana.
