Justice for Cwecwe: Siya Kolisi, Tyla and more demand action

Dozens of celebrities – including Springbok captain Siya Kolisi and Grammy-winning star Tyla – are lending their voices in the quest for justice for Cwecwe, a little girl who was reportedly raped at her Eastern Cape school last year.

Despite occurring in October 2024, the little girl’s case has only recently been made public. No arrests have been made.

CELEBS STAND UP FOR CWECWE

In the past few days, little Cwecwe’s horrific experience has made headlines both in South Africa and abroad.  Angry citizens have taken part in protests around the country, and tens of thousands have signed a petition calling for immediate action from law enforcement.

Social media influencers and anti-gender-based violence activists have used their platforms to advocate for awareness about the tragic case.

Celebrities have also joined in, with Springboks captain Siya Kolisi and superstar singer Tyla reposting messages of support for the little girl.

In a Facebook post, actor Wiseman Mncube shared his heartbreak at the traumatising ordeal suffered by Cwecwe, who is the same age as his own daughter.

Media personality Minnie Dlamini comforted Cwecwe’s mother light for justice in a post that read: “You’re not alone, mama. The whole country is right behind you”.

Former Miss SA Natasha Joubert posted a heartbreaking message that read: “So many people have failed her. Just a child with the pure intention of attending school… This is the reality we face”.

Like Somizi, DJ Zinhle also offered emotional and financial support to Cwecwe’s family. She said in an emotional post on TikTok: “I will use my resources, my voice to help wherever I can”.

WHAT HAPPENED TO LITTLE GIRL?

Over the weekend, Cwecwe’s mother – whose name is being withheld to protect the identity of her child – detailed the horrific account of her daughter’s sexual assault. The incident reportedly occured at an Eastern Cape school back in October 2024.

After taking the little girl, who was not well, to seek medical treatment, doctors confirmed that the then-seven-year-old had been raped. They also believe that the child was drugged during the ordeal.

Cwecwe later confided in her parents that the alleged incident took place at school while she was waiting for school transport.

Since then, DNA samples have been taken from reported suspects in the case. They include a school caretaker, the principal, and the transport driver. The results have not been made public.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has vowed to handle the case with urgency and sensitivity following public outcry.
