Gone Girls: The dark story of where Shannan Gilbert’s three sisters are now

Netflix has just released Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer. The documentary tells the story of the case, and how the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert became the catalyst of an investigation into a serial killer. It was the persistence of Mari Gilbert, the mother of Shannan, alongside her sisters, which lead to police investigating the case further.

The series focuses on the hunt for a serial killer, a mystery that has remained unsolved for 13 years. The murders, known as the Gilgo Beach serial killings, were a series of murders that took place from 1993 to 2011. Many of the victims were found as police searched during the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert.

Shannan Gilbert was one of four sisters – alongside Sherre, Sarra and Stevie. Here’s where the other siblings are now, since Shannan’s case and the Netflix doc.

Sherre Gilbert still fights for justice for Shannan

In 2020, there was a film on Netflix about Shannan’s case, called Lost Girls. At the end of the Netflix film, it said Sherre Gilbert remains an advocate for Shannan and continues to fight for justice. Sherre set up a Facebook page dedicated to trying to solve her sister’s death, called Praying for Shannan Maria Gilbert.

As of 2025, the page is still active, and has over 20k likes. The most recent post was about the ongoing court case of Long Island suspect, Rex Heuermann. Sherre has also appeared in a number of other TV shows and films to talk about her sister.

Sarra Gilbert was found guilty of killing their mother Mari

After her sister’s death, Sarra Gilbert spent time in and out of mental health facilities. Sarra was diagnosed with schizophrenia. According to reports, the grave circumstances surrounding her sister’s case “took its toll” on her both emotionally and mentally.

In July 2016, six years after Shannan went missing, Mari Gilbert died. Her daughter, Sarra, suffered a psychotic episode after coming off medicine for schizophrenia. Mari attempted to interfere but suffered fatal stab wounds.

Sarra Gilbert was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. She told the court: “I love my family, and I’m very sorry for what I’ve done”. She was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

Sarra is now 36, and in prison at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in New York. She will be eligible for parole in 2041.

Stevie has stayed out of the spotlight

Not much is known about the final Gilbert sister, Stevie. She hasn’t featured in Netflix shows and films about the case, and hasn’t given interviews.
