‘Can’t see sons play sports’: Elton John battles vision loss

Sir Elton John has opened up about the devastating impact of a severe eye infection that has left him with partial vision loss.

ELTON JOHN’S EYESIGHT

The 78-year-old music legend revealed to The Times that he can no longer read, watch television, or see his sons playing rugby and soccer, according to Fox News.

“It’s distressing,” he admitted. “I’m used to soaking it all up, and now I can’t.” Despite the emotional toll, Sir Elton remains determined to adapt to his new reality.

“You get emotional, but you have to get used to it. I’m lucky to have the life I have.”

The infection struck last summer while Sir Elton was in the south of France, leaving him with limited vision in his left eye and none in his right.

ELTON JOHN’S FANS SHOW SUPPORT

He first shared the news on Instagram in September, explaining that recovery is slow and uncertain. “I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process,” he wrote.

Fans and celebrities alike rallied around him, sending messages of support. Fashion designer Donatella Versace encouraged him to “take your time and recover.”

Sir Elton’s vision loss has profoundly affected his daily life and career. He confessed that he struggles with basic tasks like reading lyrics or attending musical previews, according to BBC.

THE LOVE OF FAMILY

At a gala event for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, he shared how challenging it was not being able to see performances.

“I haven’t been able to attend many previews because of my eyesight. It’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it.”

Despite these challenges, Sir Elton remains focused on cherishing time with his family. He shares two sons, Zachary (15) and Elijah (12), with his husband David Furnish.

The boys worry about their father’s health and mortality—a concern Sir Elton addressed in his documentary Elton John: Never Too Late. “They think about my mortality. They worry about my mortality,” he said.

FAREWELL, YELLOW BRICK ROAD

While acknowledging that he may not be around for milestones like their weddings or children, he emphasised the importance of making the most of their time together.

“Time together is so wonderful and so precious.” The singer’s resilience is evident in his attitude toward life’s setbacks.

He recently completed his monumental Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour after five years and 330 shows. He thanked fans for their unwavering support during his final performance in Stockholm, according to Page Six.

The singer also released a new album titled Who Believes in Angels?, collaborating with Brandi Carlile, Andrew Watt, and Bernie Taupin.
