SNL can barely have a week without controversy these days, and now it’s the turn of Aimee Lou Wood to take down Saturday Night Live after it did a ‘mean’ sketch taking shots at her appearance and The White Lotus icon called the show out for it on her Instagram. In a particularly mean spirited sketch, SNL ripped Aimee Lou Wood for her appearance and she then decided to not only put to bed some rumours about how she was treated by HBO but also how she really felt about the portrayal.
The offending sketch from SNL was one parodying The White Lotus, ripping Donald Trump and his closest circle in a skit called The White Potus. Sarah Sherman portrayed Aimee Lou Wood / Chelsea in the parody, and wore some exaggerated teeth to take the p*ss out of Aimee Lou Wood’s distinctive teeth.
In a series of stories posted to her Instagram, Aimee Lou Wood said “Nobody at HBO called me ugly!! Jeez, as if! I clearly say that was my own paranoid thought. When someone (not a producer) told me Mike White fought for me it was said in a nice way, I just spiralled about it because of my own imposter syndrome. That was my point. Just really wanted to clear that up because HBO have been nothing but super supportive.
“But whilst in honest mode – I did find the SNL thing mean and unfunny. So to conclude today’s rant: HBO – kind and supportive and never wronged me so leave them alone. SNL – mean. Such. a shame cuz I had such a great time watching it a couple weeks ago. Yes, take the piss for sure – that’s what the show is about. But there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way? ”
Aimee Lou Wood has seen a big surge of support, with many calling out the SNL sketch as unfunny. After the Morgan Wallen saga it honestly just seems to go from bad to badder. Even more reason we don’t want that dreaded, recently announced UK version.
She continued with a follow up post, saying “Last thing I’ll say on the matter: I am not thin skinned. I actually love being taken the piss out of when it’s clever and in good spirits. But the joke was about flouride. I have big gap teeth not bad teeth. I do’t mind the caricature. I understand that’s what SNL is. but the rest of the skit was punching up and I / Chelsea was the only one punched down on.”
She then posted saying she had received an apology from SNL.
