Renowned Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has publicly criticized Netflix India for its perceived hypocrisy and lack of creative freedom in the Indian market.
Kashyap’s comments were sparked by his admiration for the British Netflix series Adolescence, which he felt showcased a level of daring content that Indian filmmakers are not allowed to create on the platform.
In an Instagram post, Kashyap, who is known for his candid and outspoken views, accused Netflix India of hypocrisy, particularly in how they handle content for the Indian market.
He praised Adolescence for its bold storytelling but noted that such a show would likely be rejected or heavily altered if pitched to Netflix India.
Kashyap expressed frustration with the platform’s approach, labelling it as “morally corrupt” for prioritizing subscription growth over storytelling integrity.
Reflecting on his past experiences working with Netflix on Sacred Games, Kashyap expressed disappointment with the lack of empathy and courage shown by the platform’s executives. He noted that the team’s insecurity and frequent firings hindered the creative process.
Kashyap reminisced about a time when Netflix was more open to collaborating with creators, contrasting it with the current situation where content is often poorly developed. Despite his criticism, Kashyap expressed hope that Netflix India could learn from successful shows like Delhi Crime and improve its approach to content creation.
