8 best anti-ageing serums 2025: We put anti-wrinkle products to the test

ADDING an anti-ageing serum to your skincare regimen is a great idea whether you’re in your 20s or your 50s.

But what product is best to keep the wrinkles at bay? Read on for our pick of the best anti-wrinkle products.

Collage of four anti-aging serums.

The best anti-ageing and wrinkle products combine active ingredients to rejuvenate and nourish your skin, as well as moisturisers to keep it hydrated and supple.

They’re also uncomplicated and easy to use, absorb into your skin without a trace, and don’t leave a greasy residue.

Choose your anti-ageing serum carefully according to your skin type and sensitivity.

If your face tends to react to beauty products, you have acne, suffer from breakouts or have generally dry skin, then use a product designed to suit your particular issue.

You don’t have to spend a fortune either: there are anti-wrinkle serums for all budgets, from the inexpensive to the eye-wateringly costly.

Selecting the best anti-ageing serum can be a bit of a nightmare if you’ve not used one before, so we’ve tested a few to help you.

Head to our shopping beauty page for more round-ups and buying tips.

How we tested

Our reviewers ranged in age from their 20s to their 50s, with different skin types and needs.

They tested each serum over at least a week, often longer, so they could more accurately see any changes in their skin.

Serums were applied according to the instructions for the individual product (so morning, night or both), after cleansing and toning, but before moisturising.

Boots No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Advanced Serum[/caption]

Boots No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Advanced Serum, £24.95

Pros: Glides onto your skin, leaves skin feeling soft, non-sticky

Cons: It feels like it sits on your skin, rather than sinking into it, caused minor breakouts for me

Rating: 4/5

No 7 Protect & Perfect has many fans, myself among them and while I’ve used the day and night moisturisers in the past, I’ve not tried the serum until now.

The first thing I noticed about this Boots item was the texture – it’s very soft but feels a little plasticky, which has to be down to silicone being one of the biggest ingredients.

That’s not a bad thing – lots of skincare products contain silicone in one form or another. But it can cause breakouts in some people.

I found that after using the serum for a while I had lots of tiny bumps or milia along my cheekbones and while I don’t know for sure if this is down to the silicone content, I suspect it is.

Protect & Perfect promises to re-energise your skin, boosting glow and smoothing texture.

It contains vitamins A, C and E, as well as hyaluronic acid, matrixyl and antioxidants, all of which make for a nourishing skincare cocktail.

On the plus side, I was happy to see the fine lines around my mouth looked less noticeable, as did the lines on my brow, though my skin didn’t particularly look any brighter.

Kiehls Ultra Pure High-Potency Serum 1.5%[/caption]

Kiehls Ultra Pure High-Potency Serum 1.5%, £30

Pros: Skin felt soft and moisturised, kind to sensitive skin, only need a small amount, absorbs quickly leaving no residue, fragrance-free, visible difference to fine lines around the eyes and mouth

Cons: There wasn’t a noticeable effect on deeper forehead lines

Rating: 4/5

I tested this moisture-plumping serum on my sensitive skin, which is prone to rosacea and eczema.

It contains just seven ingredients, including 1.5% hyaluronic acid, which was well tolerated. I liked the fact it’s fragrance-free and contains no colouring, which are potential triggers for sensitive skin.

Results were visible from day two, with skin appearing brighter and softer. The serum absorbed quickly, with no residue, so it had no effect on make-up applied afterwards.

After 10 days skin felt more hydrated and less irritated. Flare-ups lessened and fine lines around the mouth and eyes looked less prominent. The serum didn’t seem to have much of an effect on forehead lines, but these were deeper and more established.

Kiehl’s Skin-Renewing Daily Micro-Dose Serum[/caption]

Kiehl’s Skin-Renewing Daily Micro-Dose Serum, from £50

Pros: smooths skin, skin looks more youthful, hydrating, anti-ageing

Cons: Best to use at night only

Rating: 4/5

If you’ve not used retinol before then it can seem a bit of a scary ingredient in skincare, however, it is a potent player and can really improve your complexion by evening out skin tone and texture, brightening and firming the skin, and reducing lines and wrinkles.

This product from Kiehl’s contains retinol alongside hydrating and moisturising ingredients such as ceramides and peptides and is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive ones.

Although the serum was yellow when first pumped from the bottle, I found it became clear once massaged into my skin, leaving it glistening.

Retinol promotes cell turnover and encourages collagen production, so it’s a great addition to an anti-ageing skincare regimen.

I found it best to use this serum before bed so it could work overnight. Generally speaking, retinol products should be used at night, rather than in the morning as they make skin more sensitive to the sun.

Lumin Men’s Skincare Badass Bundle, from £83.39

Pros: Skin feels brighter and more even after use, each product is light and non-greasy, no strong scents, just good quality product

Cons: Expensive, confusing website layout

Rating: 4.5/5

Lumin specialises in men’s skin, body and hair care. It offers a complete range of skincare products that includes face wash, scrub, serum, moisturiser, anti-redness cream, face mask and dark circle balm, available to buy individually or in bundles.

I tested the Badass Bundle, consisting of Wrinkle Defense Serum, Charcoal Face Wash, Charcoal Scrub, Dark Circle Defense Balm and Daily Face Moisturizer.

All products were great to use: they’re light and non-greasy, contain skincare actives such as niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C, as well as herb and spice extracts such as meadowfoam seed oil and ginger.

The Wrinkle Defense Serum is designed to target signs of premature ageing and has a gel-like consistency, which spreads easily.

It contains hyaluronic acid for hydration, ferulic acid to fight wrinkles, fine lines and age spots, and vitamin C to protect skin from pollution and UV damage.

I used the serum in conjunction with the moisturiser and dark circle balm for a month and at the end of that time I noticed definite improvements – dark circles were less noticeable, skin redness decreased, breakouts were fewer and skin tone was more even. Overall, my complexion looked brighter and healthier.

SkinCeuticals Silymarin CF Vitamin C
Salicylic Acid Antioxidant Serum, £165

Pros: Reduces oil production and breakouts, lightweight and non-greasy, non-drying, feels great on the skin

Cons: Very expensive, not for all skin types

Rating: 5/5

This serum contains 15% L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) with antioxidant ferulic acid and salicylic acid. It’s designed for blemish-prone or oily skin, reducing sebum and helping get rid of spots and blackheads.

I found the formula was potent but happily it didn’t dry out my skin; it’s lightweight, fragrance-free and feels great when I apply it, I could tell it was having beneficial effects.

If I could afford to use this serum every day I would do so.

Tula 24-7 Ultra Hydration Triple-Hydra Complex Day & Night Serum

Tula 24-7 Ultra Hydration Triple-Hydra Complex Day & Night Serum[/caption]

Tula 24-7 Ultra Hydration Triple-Hydra
Complex Day & Night Serum, £41

Pros: Instantly hydrating, layers well

Cons: Pricey

Rating: 5/5

This serum from Tula hydrates for up to 24 hours. It contains probiotic and prebiotic extracts to restore skin balance, as well as hyaluronic acid, squalane and polyglutamic acid for maximum hydration.

It has a runny texture, which meant it was easy to spread smoothly over my face and I found it absorbed quickly – in less than a minute.

I used it on dry skin that’s prone to redness and hormonal breakouts and was impressed with the result. My skin was less dry and this lasted throughout the day; where there were flaky patches, they were soothed and moisturised.

Practically speaking, the packaging locks by twisting it, so it doesn’t leak into your bag, and it worked well with other serums.

Overall I found this gave a great hydration boost and I’ll continue to use it as part of my skincare routine going forwards.

Evolve Organic Beauty Age Defying Lifting Serum

Evolve Organic Beauty Age Defying Lifting Serum[/caption]

Evolve Organic Beauty Age Defying
Lifting Serum, from £48.60

Pros: Rich texture, absorbed quickly, spread easily, didn’t need much each time

Cons: Left a slightly tacky feel for a minute or so

Rating: 4.5/5

This anti-ageing serum promises to firm, lift and plump – all things my skin could do with more of.

It includes peptides, such as argireline and marine ingredients that boost collagen production and have a lifting effect (antarcticine and sirtalice).

I applied this morning and night, after cleansing but before moisturising. While I didn’t notice any lifting, I did think the lines on my neck looked less deep and the lines around my mouth were also fainter.

The texture is creamy but the serum sinks in quickly, though it does leave a slightly sticky feel for a minute or so.

That wasn’t a problem for me, I was happy to wait for the tackiness to go before applying moisturiser – what’s 60 seconds in the great scheme of things?

I enjoyed using this and loved the pump-action delivery as it’s easier to gauge how much product is dispensed, whereas with the more usual pipette delivery I think there’s more wastage.

You only need a couple of pumps to cover your face and neck as the serum spreads easily, so the bottle should last a while, which is a good thing as it’s rather expensive.

Trinny London Overnight Clarity

Trinny London Overnight Clarity[/caption]

Trinny London Overnight Clarity, £75

Pros: My skin looked brighter the next morning

Cons: Slight tingling a couple of time I used it, no difference to facial lines, no noticeable difference to pigmentation, can stain, price

Rating: 3.5/5

Overnight Clarity is an evening treatment that works its magic while you sleep and though it’s expensive, Trinny London says you just need one pump of the product to cover your face.

I started off as per the instructions using the serum twice a week – the first time I experienced slight tingling but other than that, the only other time I experienced this was when I applied the product just after taking a shower.

From first use I noticed my skin looked brighter, but I couldn’t put my finger on what exactly had changed. I increased the number of days I used the product until I was using it nightly, but while my skin continued to look brighter, I saw no difference to pigmentation (I have freckles) or lines, fine or otherwise.

The serum is bright yellow so you need to wait until it’s fully absorbed before going to bed otherwise you could end up with stained pillows. It absorbs pretty quickly though.

Overall, I was a little disappointed, I had high hopes for this serum but sadly it didn’t really live up to them. It was okay, but it’s not something I’ll continue to use.

Size:  30ml, Hero ingredients: retinal (which converts into high strength vitamin A), niacinamide (boosts hydration, repairs and supports collagen production), azelaic acid (for hyperpigmentation and inflammation), Cruelty-free: Yes, Vegan: Yes

Review by Lisa Burn

What is anti-ageing serum?

Anti-ageing serum is a product you apply to your face and neck before applying your moisturiser.

It’s an extra layer of skincare that contains ingredients that benefit your skin in a variety of ways.

These may include hyaluronic acid, which locks in moisture; vitamin C to protect against environmental and sun damage, retinol, which reveals brighter skin, or nourishing peptides and ceramides.

Vitamin C and retinol also support and boost collagen production, which helps with your skin’s firmness – an essential plus point for older skin that can sag.

Some serums, such as retinol, are designed to be worn at night, while others are used during the day, and some are suitable for both day and nighttime skincare regimes.

When should you start using anti ageing serums

Although anti-ageing serums are not a necessity if you’re still in your 20s, it’s never too early to start benefitting from their ingredients if you wish.

A lot depends on the state of your skin – if you’re prone to breakouts a serum might be too much, but if your skin is dry you may enjoy the extra layer of moisturisation they provide.

Sun damage ages skin early, causing fine lines and brown spots, so a serum containing vitamin C could provide extra protection (though you should apply facial sunscreen for optimum protection from UV rays).

You may just like the reassurance of an anti-ageing serum, a sort of guarantee against future lines and wrinkles, and while it’s not the fountain of youth it will certainly help keep your face feeling firmer, hydrated, smoother and rejuvenated.

How to prevent wrinkles

While you can’t stop yourself getting older, you can help prevent wrinkles with a few sensible steps that should become routine:

  • Wear sunscreen on your face all year round, not just in summer. Not sure which to buy? Read our best SPF for faces article.
  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and stop you from squinting – the cause of laughter lines and fine lines on your forehead
  • Apply moisturiser every day – this will help keep your skin hydrated and protect it from environmental damage
  • Drink plenty of water – to help keep your skin moisturised from the inside, looking plump and firm
  • Eat healthily, with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, good fats (such as omega 3 from oily fish), nuts and seeds. Reduce the amount of processed food you consume, especially ultra-processed foods
  • Cleanse skin properly and remove make-up every evening
  • Try not to frown – try and reduce stress so you’re not wrinkling up your face in worry lines
  • Sleep well – make sure you get enough shut eye for you every night, whether that’s seven, eight, nine hours or more
  • Cut down on alcohol – it’s drying and very ageing
  • Stop smoking – as well as being bad for your health it’s ageing to your skin, speeding up elasticity loss. All that pursing of your lips when you inhale causes lines and wrinkles around your mouth as well!

Where to buy anti-ageing serums in the UK

Anti-ageing serums have become so popular in recent years that they’re now a part of many people’s skincare routines and are widely available.

Check out the skincare counters of department store beauty sections, as well as large branches of pharmacies, such as Boots or Superdrug, and specialist beauty retailers.

Online, you’ll find the biggest choice at large beauty retailers such as Look Fantastic and Sephora, while Amazon is always worth checking, especially because it often has special offers on products.

We found the anti-ageing serums tested by our reviewers at:

How much do anti-ageing serums cost?

Anti-ageing serums vary in price, from just a few pounds up to over £100.

Cost depends on the active ingredients as well as the brand, with designer names costing more than a generic product from the pharmacy.

The anti-ageing serums reviewed in our feature cost from £30 and went up to £165 for the most expensive product tested.

Popular bank with 2million customers to make big change to accounts TOMORROW

A POPULAR bank with two million customers is making a big change to accounts tomorrow.

Chase is once again set to drop rates on one of its savings accounts, marking the second cut in just one week by the firm.

Alamy
Chase will once again cut the rate on one of its savings accounts[/caption]

Customers are currently getting 3.25% interest on their standard Saver account.

The interest was previously set at 3.5%, but it was cut by the bank last Thursday, February 13.

And now from tomorrow, the rate will once again drop to 3%.

It comes after the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), the BoE’s rate-setters reduced the base rate from 4.75% to 4.5% earlier this month.

The base rate is used by lenders to determine the interest rates offered to customers on savings and borrowing costs.

A base rate cut can mean that mortgage rates are lowered, which is good news for homeowners.

But savers can be left with the short end of the stick as the interest rate they earn on their savings can also drop.

Markets are expecting the base rate to drop as low as 4% by the end of the year, which would see the interest rate on the Saver account reduce even further.

Of course, if the base rate increases again then the account will mirror this.

It’s not all doom and gloom though because the account is still a pretty good option for savers.

At 3% the Chase Saver standard rate is above market average for easy access accounts and it also doesn’t have restrictions, fees, charges, or penalties.

Anyone who signs up as a new customer can get an extra 1.5% AER (annual equivalent rate) fixed interest for the first six months (which won’t change with the base rate) on top of the basic underlying rate.

This is if they open a Chase Saver account within the first 31 days of joining the bank

You can sign up for one of the accounts via the Chase app which is downloadable in the Apple App Store or via Google Play.

ALL CHANGE FOR BANK RATES

Numerous banks have been cutting their savings rates following the Bank of England’s decision.

Barclays  slashed the rates on its Everyday Saver and Rainy Day saver accounts.

For the Everyday Saver, the interest rate has been lowered from 1.51% to 1.26% on balances up to £10,000.

The Rainy Day Saver, which is for Barclays Blue Rewards members and Premier Banking customers, is reducing its rate from 5.12% to 4.87%.

Where to find the best savings rates

Many savings accounts offer miserly rates meaning that money is generating little or no return.

However, there are ways to get your cash working hard. Sun Savers Editor Lana Clements explains how to make sure you money is getting the best interest rate.

Easy access savings accounts offer flexibility for customers, meaning they can dip in and out of cash when needed. However, the caveat is that rates can change at any time.

If you’re keeping your money in an easy access account, you’ll need to keep checking whether it’s the best paying account for your circumstances and move if not.

Check in at least once a month to see what is happening in the market.

Check what is offered by your bank – sometimes the best rates are for customers only.

But do search the wider market as often top savings accounts are offered by lesser known providers.

Comparison sites are a good place to check for the top rates. Try Moneyfactscompare.co.uk or Moneysupermarket.

You can search by different account type. You’ll usually get a better interest rate if you can lock your money away for a fixed amount of time, but it’s always a good idea to keep some money in an easy access account in case of emergencies.

Don’t overlook regular savings accounts often pay some of the best rates, but you’ll need to commit to monthly payments. This can be a great way to get into a savings habit while earning top rates at the same time.

Watch awkward moment Curtis and Ekin-Su are interviewed by his Love Island ex Amy  – who can’t resist cheeky swipe

LOVE Island’s Curtis Pritchard reunited with his ex Amy Hart after leaving the All Stars villa – and it was hilariously awkward.

Curtis, who placed third in last night’s finale with girlfriend Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, appeared on the show’s Instagram Live ahead of the finale, chatting to Amy Hart – who he famously split with during his first time in the villa.

The group joked about their shared past, with Ekin bonding with Amy[/caption]

Amy, who now hosts Love Island’s spin-off podcast The Morning After, couldn’t resist making a playful jab at her ex as they reunited for the first time since they called it quits.

Amy wasted no time in referencing their break-up, playfully asking Ekin-Su: “How many coffees have you had, Ekin, in the morning?”

“I think I made her quite a few!” laughed Curtis, brushing off the comment, before asking Ekin: “Now be honest, did you like them, that’s the thing.”

“Not when times when things were bumpy, but yes, other than that, I loved them,” Ekin laughed, with Curtis grimacing alongside her.

Curtis and Amy were coupled up together during their time on the show back in 2019, but broke up shortly after his return from Casa Amor.

While he chose to recouple with Amy, he later called things off, prompting her to tell him “I was coming back here to tell you I love you.”

She also noted his lack of affection towards her, telling him: “If someone likes you they want to have a cuddle in bed with you in the morning.”

But he now famously responded: “I know and I also want to be the person that gets up and makes everyone a coffee so everyone’s ready for the morning.”

Amy quit the show shortly afterwards, not wanting to continue after being heartbroken and watching him crack on with Maura Higgins.

Six years on and it seems the pair were willing to joke about the moment, with Amy joking he was “lucky he didn’t get it thrown in his face” in a joke about Ekin-Su throwing a drink over Curtis during their time in All Stars.

Ekin responded: “Or may be on the knee, but yeah …”

Curtis appeared to say: “There was nearly a WKD wasn’t it … but let’s forget about that!”

“I love how boys are really protective of their shoes, aren’t they? So everyone was like ‘she went for the shoes’ but was that y’know…. hit them where it hurts?” Amy teased, with Ekin responding: “Exactly, babe, exactly!”

Curtis then joked: “I think I should just leave you two to continue here.” before pretending to walk off, which prompted Amy to state: “No, it’s all love here.”

On last night’s finale, Gabby Allen and Casey O’Gorman were crowned the winners in a shock announcement, beating out bookies favourites Grace Jackson and Luca Bish.

Ekin and Curtis came third, Catherine Agbaje and Omar Nyame came fourth, and Elma Pazar and Sammy Root placed fifth.

Major bank launches new credit and debit card cashback deal & even existing customers can claim it

A MAJOR bank has launched a new credit and debit card cashback deal for thousands of customers.

Santander customers who opt in can earn up to £15 in free cashback between now and March 31.

Banco Santander logo on a building.
Getty
If you’ve met all the criteria and qualified for the offer, Santander said that it will issue the payment in April, May or June[/caption]

While there are no strict eligibility requirements beyond having a current account or credit card with the bank, the offer is only available to those who have received an email about it.

So, make sure to check both your inbox and junk folder to confirm your invitation.

Additionally, there’s one small step you’ll need to complete to claim the reward.

To qualify for the £15, you must complete 15 or more eligible purchases within the promotional period.

Santander defines an ‘eligible purchase’ as transactions made for goods and services.

However, the bank has clarified that certain transactions are excluded.

This includes balance transfers, cash advances, travellers‘ cheques, foreign currency and money orders, interest, unauthorised or fraudulent transactions, account charges of any kind, advances used for lottery or gambling payments, or direct debits or standing orders.

Examples of eligible purchases could include buying a daily coffee, doing your weekly food shop, paying your mobile phone bill, or covering your gym membership.

That’s provided these transactions are paid using your Santander debit or credit card.

Any such transactions made between February 18 and March 31 will contribute towards your eligibility for the £15 cashback.

If you’ve met all the criteria and qualified for the offer, Santander said that it will issue the payment in April, May or June.

The £15 cashback will appear on your bank statement under the transaction description “PROMOTIONAL CASHBACK”.

What is cashback?

CASHBACK is a type of reward offered by banks, credit card providers, and retailers where customers receive a percentage of their spending back as cash.

Essentially, it’s a way to earn money while making purchases.

For example, if your card offers 1% cashback and you spend £100, you’ll earn £1 back.

Cashback can be credited to your account, deducted from your balance, or saved up for future use, depending on the provider’s terms.

It’s often offered on everyday purchases, such as groceries, fuel, or online shopping, and may be part of a promotional deal or an ongoing benefit of your account.

However, remember to check the terms and conditions, as some transactions may not qualify for cashback rewards.

By using cashback offers wisely, you can usually make your money go further on purchases you’d already be making.

What other card providers offer regular cashback?

Several major banks and lenders offer cashback through their current account or credit card products.

Use these cards wisely and you’ll end up making your money go further with every purchase.

These cards deduct a percentage of what you’ve spent from your balance – effectively giving you money back on your spending.

The Chase debit card is a standout option, offering 1% cashback on most spending (capped at £15 per month).

While there are some exclusions, it’s a straightforward deal, and you only need to pass an ID check to open a new account.

After the first year, you’ll need to pay in £1,500 each month to continue earning cashback.

If you’re considering a credit card, the American Express Cashback Everyday Credit Card is a great option for those expecting a high-spend period.

It offers an impressive 5% cashback on purchases for the first five months (up to £125).

After this introductory period, you can earn up to 1% cashback, but you’ll need to spend over £3,000 annually to qualify for ongoing rewards.

For those who might not meet the £3,000 annual spending threshold, the American Express Cashback Credit Card is another strong choice.

It also offers 5% cashback for the first three months (up to £125), followed by 0.75% cashback on spending up to £10,000 per year and 1.25% above that.

However, this card does come with a £25 annual fee.

If you frequently shop online the Amazon Barclaycard is great for its regular customers.

It offers 1% cashback on Amazon purchases (boosted to 2% during Prime Days and Black Friday) and 0.25% cashback elsewhere (0.5% in the first year).

It also provides an Amazon voucher upon acceptance, usually worth £20.

Lastly, the Santander Edge Credit Card offers 1% cashback on everyday spending (boosted to 2% in the first year, capped at £15 per month).

It has a £3 monthly fee and is only available to Santander current account holders.

Think before you borrow

BORROWING sounds like a simple way to help pay bills – but beware falling into debt you cannot pay back.

It’s always vital to ask yourself if you actually need to borrow before committing to a new credit card, personal loan or overdraft.

If you cannot afford to pay off debt you already have, you should avoid at all costs taking on any more.

Chatting to Biz about life on the road vs on the big screen during the dinner, Camila said: “I think performing music is what I know and what I’m used to, but I do like to be pushed outside of my comfort zone.

“So acting is scarier for me ,but I love it.

“On tour I like to have a set playlist of songs that I’ll listen to before going on stage – I love El Alfa, Rem and Latto.”

In 2021, Camila starred alongside Pierce Brosnan as Cinderella in Amazon‘s big musical adaptation, produced by James Corden.

While last year she appeared in the gritty drama, Rob Peace.

Insisting she’s keen to try out any role rather than pigeon hole herself, Camila added: “I’m open-minded about future roles I may take on.

“I love to be challenged and do things I haven’t done before.”

Speaking to Bizarre during the VIP Bafta dinner in London, Camila admitted she can’t get enough of the UK – though still needs some time to get into UK TV.

After Wallace and Gromit won big on Sunday night the singer admits she can’t wait to check them out.

Camila said: “They are so adorable I’ve not actually seen any of them but it’s now on my to watch list.”

She will play shows across the continent in June and July – with a date at London’s Eventim Apollo on July 8.
