I put my fever and lost voice down to a nasty ‘winter bug’ – now I live with a cancer that will never be cured
AFTER suffering a fever and losing her voice, mum-of-four Kirsty Lawson thought she was the victim of a nasty winter virus.
But when a lump the size of an egg appeared on her neck, she booked an appointment with her GP – just to be safe.

Tests revealed the 53-year-old had mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), a rare type of blood cancer.
She had to undergo six rounds of “hellish” chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant to blast it into remission.
“I’ve always been quite healthy; I eat well and I exercise,” explains the mum, from Wandsworth, South London.
“But in 2018, I started feeling really tired and rundown all the time.
“I kept on losing my voice. I thought it was just a virus but then I discovered a lump about the size of an egg on the side of my neck, so I thought I’d better get it checked out.”
Kirsty was sent for scans, but still medics thought she had a virus.
She returned to her GP six weeks later when her voice hadn’t come back and she was suffering a fever.
“It was probably 10 weeks by this time that I had no voice,” Kirsty recalls.
“When I went back to the GP he couldn’t get me an appointment with a specialist for months so he sent me to A&E as I’d be seen sooner.
“The hospital did further tests and arranged an appointment for me to see a specialist ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon.
“By the time that appointment came round it was about 12 weeks and I still had no voice.
“When I got there, he said it was probably just a virus and couldn’t understand why I’d been referred.
“But when he took a look down my throat, he made some noises and I could see he wasn’t happy.
“He took a fine needle biopsy and ultrasound and asked if I had swollen lymph nodes anywhere else.
“I did, in my armpit and my groin.”
Kirsty was later diagnosed with stage three MCL.
It happens when white blood cells called lymphocytes grow out of control and travel around the body.
It affects immunity and, as well as painful swellings in the neck, groin and armpit, it can also cause heavy sweating, weight loss and a fever.
It’s rare, only affecting around 600 Brits a year.
I felt like I was letting the children down as it was my job to look after them
Kirsty Lawson
“I was shocked,” Kirsty says.
“I had gone to Dr Google and looked up my symptoms and lymphoma came up, but I still wasn’t expecting them to say that’s what it was.
“One of my first worries was, ‘Will I lose my hair?’ At that stage my hair was very long and when he said ‘yes’, I got very upset.
“I think for women, hair makes you feel feminine. Without it you can feel a bit sexless.
“My four children Jessica, 29, Michaela, 25, Joshua, 24 and Matthew, 22, were all teenagers at the time too.
“They worried, thinking I would die. I was the mainstay in their lives, the breadwinner. I couldn’t do much to reassure them.
“All I could say was that the treatment was happening to try and prevent that.”
Uncertain future
Kirsty had surgery in Australia, where she was working as a medical consultant, to remove the swollen lymph nodes, as well as chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant.
Lymphoma is incurable but it can be put into remission, and fortunately, after treatment, that’s what happened to Kirsty.
There are still no signs of active cancer and she goes back for six monthly check-ups to make sure the cancer doesn’t return.
“There is no guarantee how long remission will last,” she says.
“It could be six weeks, six months or six years. There is no set time frame.
“I’ve tried to reassure the kids as best as I can. For children of their age, they did have to grow up quickly. They had to step up.
“There were days I was so poorly I just couldn’t do things for them. I felt like I was letting the children down as it was my job to look after them.
“I did lose my hair. I think by the time it happened I had come to terms with it.
“I ordered a wig and as I continued working part-time, I put that on every time I had a meeting. Fortunately, I came out the other side.”

Kirsty and her family moved back to the UK when her treatment came to an end and she knew she wanted to do something to help people with cancer.
Through her job, she saw a device on LinkedIn that could be used easily at home to detect breast cancer cells at an early stage.
She has since set up a company to launch the device, called the Luminous Pro Series UK, in Britain.
“The type of cancer I had is very difficult to see,” she says. “But breast cancer is different.
“Women can use this machine themselves at home. Men can use it too, as they get breast cancer sometimes.
“When I saw this device I knew there was nothing else out there like it.
“It gives women the power to check their breasts at home.
“It’s not meant to replace a mammogram. It’s an extra to your self examination.
“You can see inside your breast to see what is normal for you. Not everything you see is cancer. It might pick up benign cysts.
“But if you spot something, you can send this information to your GP and get checked out.”
I will always have to live with the worry that my cancer will come back
Kirsty Lawson
The £235 handheld Luminous Pro Series uses red light technology to illuminate the tissue inside the breast and any abnormalities will appear darker or as shadowy areas.
Kirsty and her two daughters, aged 29 and 25, use it once a month, as does Kirsty’s husband Rob, 54, an anaesthetic practitioner.
“Bringing this to the UK brought me something to focus on when I was at the depths of my treatment,” Kirsty says.
“It can help women detect cancer early and that has always been the driving force for me.
“My cancer is in remission now, my hair has grown back.
“I’m hopeful that future scans will remain clear. Of course, we always have to live with the worry that it will come.
“But whatever the future holds, at least I know I’ve done something to help others with cancer.
“Hopefully they won’t have to go through the gruelling treatment I did and can catch and treat it early, then move on with their lives.”

A clinical trial carried out by the University of Toronto and the National University of Caaguazu found the device was better at detecting breast abnormalities than a mammogram.
Often considered the gold standard for screening, the mammogram has an estimated sensitivity of 86.9 per cent and a specificity of 88.9 per cent.
In these trials, the Luminous Pro Series had a sensitivity of 89.6 per cent and a specificity of 96.4 for detecting breast abnormalities.
But it’s still vital to attend your mammogram screenings.
Figures show that over four in 10 women invited for their first breast check don’t take up the invitation.
In 2023, there were 18,942 tumours detected out of 1.93million women screened for breast cancer, but a further 1.05m women who were invited did not attend.
The one per cent detection rate means there were potentially 10,000 missed cases.
Women registered with a GP are automatically invited for NHS breast screening between the ages of 50 and 53, then every three years until the age of 71.
A new campaign will see celebs like Strictly Come Dancing judge Shirley Ballas and presenters Victoria Derbyshire and Julia Bradbury send “personal” letters to women, urging them to attend.
Cancer screenings in England
CATCHING cancer early gives you the best chance of survival, and a huge part of that is attending regular screenings.
NHS programmes can help diagnose the disease, or your risk of it, and improve the likelihood of successful treatment.
There are three national screening programmes in England: cervical screening, breast screening and bowel screening.
“If you are eligible, please make every effort to have your screening test as they can detect a problem early, before you have any symptoms. ,” the NHS says.
“Finding out about a problem early can mean that treatment is more effective.”
Cervical screening
This is offered in England to people with a cervix aged 25 to 64 and is routinely carried out every three years up to the age of 49, and every five from 50 to 64.
Depending on the result, people may be recalled earlier.
During a cervical screening, samples are tested for high risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which causes nearly all cervical cancers.
Those that test positive are then analysed further.
Breast screening
Breast screenings, which involve an X-ray test called a mammogram that can spot cancers when they are too small to see or feel, are usually offered to women aged 50 to 71 in England.
But the NHS is trialling them for women under 50 if they have a high risk of developing breast cancer.
Bowel screening
This test detects whether patients are showing any early signs of cancer.
It is available to everyone aged 50 to 74, with at-home kits automatically sent out every two years, so make sure your GP has your correct address.
The test involves providing a small poo sample to be checked for tiny amounts of blood, which could be caused by cancer.
If you’re 75 or over, you can ask for a kit every two years by phoning the free bowel cancer screening helpline on 0800 707 60 60.

Michael Schumacher’s wife Corinna breaks silence over family bodyguard’s sick ‘intimate photo’ blackmail plot
MICHAEL Schumacher’s wife has broken her silence on a “far too lenient” sentence handed out following a £12million blackmail plot against the racing star.
Corinna Schumacher has sought to appeal the trial verdict handed out to the “mastermind” behind the shocking case.

The Schumacher family’s ex-bodyguard, Markus Fritsche was accused of supplying blackmailers with private images and was handed a two-year suspended prison sentence.
Yilmaz Tozturkan, 53, was also arrested after hard drives containing private pictures, medical records, and videos of the Formula One legend were stolen.
Tozturkan and his his 30-year-old son Daniel Lins were accused of demanding £12 million from the Schumacher family.
The pair from Wuppertal in western Germany threatened to release 1,500 confidential files about the motorsport legend, on the dark web, if they did not get the money.
Tozturkan, who is currently behind bars for an unrelated crime, confessed and was handed a three-year sentence and Lins was handed a six-month suspended sentence.
Despite this, Corinna and the Schumacher family slammed these sentences and especially hit out at Fritsche’s for not being hard enough.
A statement from Monday said: “We have appealed against what we consider to be the far too lenient sentence for Mr F,
“In my opinion, he was the mastermind behind this. What still shocks me most is the massive breach of trust. He should receive a punishment that deters any potential copycats.”

Charlotte Crosby wears skintight bodysuit 16 days after welcoming second child – ‘I don’t know how I look this good’
SHOWING off her post-baby figure, Charlotte Crosby has wowed fans by rocking a skintight black bodysuit.
Just 16 days after welcoming her second child via c-section, doting mum Charlotte, 34, has shown off her figure saying “I don’t know how I look this good”.

The former MTV star confirmed the arrival of her daughter, baby Pixi, on social media on February 3, and now she has shown off her postpartum body.
Sharing a short video of herself posing up a storm in front of a full-length mirror in a skintight black bodysuit on Snapchat, Charlotte said: “How?????” before writing a more lengthy caption.
Writing over the tip of the clip, she penned: “I’m slightly confused at how I look and feel this good about my body 16 days after Pixi, but I’m here for it.
“I’m still in pain but I’m bloody here for it,” she said alongside a string of laughing face emojis.
She added: “I have improved my diet hugely and upped my protein!
“But honestly, it took me a year to feel semi ok after Alba!
“The body is crazy isn’t it!”
When Charlotte announced the news of her newborn baby’s birth at the start of the month she took to Instagram to post a photo of her partner Jake Ankers cradling the tot and their daughter Alba, two.
After Charlotte confirmed she had welcomed her daughter into the world via her newsletter, she also shared the sweet moniker they’d chosen, revealing that the tot’s name is Pixi Cecilia.
HOSPITAL DASH
But just days after welcoming the newborn, the reality star provided a worrying update, telling her fans that Pixi was rushed to the hospital after a worrying discovery.
“Our Pixi girl has had a hell of a morning bless her soul,” Charlotte revealed on her Instagram stories on February 7.
“I noticed a little lump on Pixi’s chin a couple of days ago! And wanted to flag it with our doctors before we left,” she added.
She then revealed: “After some bloods and an ultrasound and a lot of tears watching my brave little girl having to go through all of this at only 7 days old, we’ve got some good news that it’s hopefully nothing to worry about and we just need to keep an eye on it.”
Pixi’s arrival came after Charlotte and Jake were left terrified just after the star’s £1million home was burgled – while they were upstairs.
Charlotte Crosby and Jake Anker's relationship timeline
The pair met back in 2021 while Charlotte was getting over her break-up with ex-boyfriend Liam Beaumont.
They were introduced by mutual friends.
Charlotte and Jake then went official with their relationship in January 2022.
The following month the Geordie Shore star found out she was pregnant.
Charlotte and Jake revealed they were expecting in April 2022.
They welcomed baby Alba-Jean into the world in October that year.
In November 2023 the couple got engaged.
SCARY ORDEAL
Jake, 33, revealed on social media that a gang of masked robbers armed with machetes stormed inside their stunning mansion.
The Sun later told how the pair had taken extra measures to make sure that they are free from danger.
Just weeks after that ordeal, the TV personality was rushed to hospital shortly afterwards where it was revealed she had a urine infection.
Scared Jake shared at the time: “We are not having a good week!!!
“Now Charlotte has been rushed in to hospital as she is having serious pains in her stomach, they are running all the necessary checks to make sure Charlotte and baby are ok.”

Iconic car firm ‘on brink of collapse’ set to ‘re-enter’ talks with rival brand over ‘mega-merger’
A LEGENDARY Japanese car firm’s “mega-merger” with a rival brand could be back on after reports they are set to re-enter talks.
Popular amongst Brits since the sixties, the brand has been the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer for decades.

Honda could be re-entering talks with Nissan to create the world’s fourth-biggest car producer but there’s a catch, according to the Financial Times.
According to those close to the chief executive of Nissan, Makoto Uchida, it may require him to step down before progress can be made between the companies.
Despite the 58-year-old being an advocate for the relationship, his Honda counterpart has reportedly been frustrated by Nissan’s money problems and lack of speed.
It is thought Uchida plans to stay on until 2026 but recent pressure from board members could lead to an earlier exit.
A source told the Financial Times how Honda could be prepared to re-enter discussions of a future with Nissan if the talks were with a different boss.
Nissan remains an attractive business partner due to its capital ties with Mitsubishi Motors and foothold in south-east Asia.
Toshihiro Mibe, the CEO of Honda, original opened up about the break-down, describing “regret”.
Although a spokesperson for Honda has revealed business discussions have not been fully ruled out.
The two Japanese car giants have both been framed for their reliability and quality.
Merger talks were originally thought to have been cancelled earlier this month after one senior Nissan official strongly objected to the “rude things” his company had been told.
Nissan has been struggling with sales in recent years, brought about by poor management decisions and a failure to adapt to the growing electric vehicle (EV) market.
Worries have been further exacerbated by the Zero-Emission Vehicle, or ZEV, mandate, requiring 28 per cent of car sales to be electric in 2025 — or face fines of £15,000 for every car they fall short on.
A merger with Honda could cut costs for both companies, but there has been two key reasons behind the collapse in talks.
Firstly, discomfort came from Honda’s demand that Nissan would become its subsidiary, something the latter felt went against previous agreements, reports The Japan News.
Secondly, Honda also told Nissan to restructure its business and abandon its original hybrid vehicle (HV) system, e-Power, in order to adopt Honda’s HV system.
Nissan was previously a top contender for its EV production but recently has struggled to keep up with Toyota and Honda.
The company published its financial outlook for the year ending in March and a net loss of hundreds of millions of pounds has been predicted.
Industry insiders have revealed that Nissan is now open to mergers with other automotive or technology firms.
One of the potential companies is Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Technology Group.
This follows the 9,000 job losses that were witnessed at Nissan.
Without much-needed support, a Nissan official has claimed that the firm only has “12 to 14 months to survive”.
The brand also runs the UK’s largest car factory in Sunderland but pressure from the Government’s EV sales targets has played a part in Nissan’s woes.
It was previously reported that Uchida spoke to the Prime Minister to raise his concerns about the impact of government rules on the business.
He was also thought to have warned ministers, including Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, that current rules could pose a direct risk to the Sunderland plans.

Loose Women star Denise Welch ‘rushed to hospital’ in ‘the worst pain ever’ – but spends 24 hours waiting for a bed
DENISE Welch has revealed she was rushed to hospital in “the worst pain ever” – but spent 24 hours waiting for a bed.
The Loose Women star, 66, shared the update with her fans on social media and opened up about the dramatic experience.

In a now-deleted post, Denise said: “2 weeks ago I was in the worst pain ever.
“We waited 90 minutes for an ambulance and then I spent 24 hours in A&E waiting for a bed on the surgical ward.”
Fans were quick to send Denise well wishes and, while she didn’t expand on the reason for her hospital stay, she said: “I’m much better thank you x.”
Denise’s latest health battle comes after she was forced to miss work committments in December after struggling with depression.
She had been due to appear in pantomime but had to pull out and also took a break from Loose Women while she focused on her mental health.
Before her absence from the show, Denise – who returned earlier this month – spoke about her struggles.
She said: “I’d just done a podcast saying I’d been free for five years from clinical depression and that I hoped that something that happened when I had a baby had reversed.
“But sadly the unwelcome visitor paid me an unwelcome visit and so I’ve not been well for a couple of weeks.”
Denise, who has battled with depression for over 30 years, continued: “The reason why I’m glad we’ve alluded to it is because we do all of things like Britain Get Talking and sometimes people still find that it isn’t always good to talk.
“So I just wanted to come on here because what I need when I’m poorly is for my friends to just know that I need time to get well.
“I need for the people that I work with like yourselves and like our wonderful production team to say ‘if you want to come to work come to work.”
“And if I don’t, like last week I didn’t come to work, because I know my illness more than anyone.”
