It’s set to be another chilly day today, with temperatures falling as low as -1C in some parts of the UK.
As our map shows, Scotland and northern England will see the coolest weather, with snow possible on higher ground, according to the Met Office.
Southern England will be a few degrees warmer, with temperatures hovering between 2C and 5C.
A yellow snow and ice warning was issued for parts of northern England, that started at 6am this morning and ends at 2pm this afternoon.
The UK Health Security Agency, meanwhile, has issued a cold weather alert covering parts of the northeast of England, Yorkshire and The Humber.
The Met Office warned that the rare weather phenomenon, freezing rain, could affect parts of the Pennines, causing icy conditions.
Freezing rain is when liquid precipitation strikes a cold surface and freezes almost instantly.
The Met office said: ‘The conditions needed for freezing rain are quite specific and we don’t see this phenomenon very often in the UK.
‘It can produce striking effects, as the rain drop spreads out momentarily across the surface before it freezes, encasing the surface in a layer of clear ice.’
Although freezing rain can produce eye-catching scenes, it’s also potentially dangerous as it is sometimes heavy enough to bring down trees and power lines and can turn roads and pathways into ice rinks.
Speaking about today’s forecast, Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Matthew Lehnert, said: ‘Through Saturday rain will move further east and as it does, it’ll bump into the colder air meaning some snow is likely, mainly for parts of Northern England, covered by the snow and ice warning. 2 – 5 cm is possible over the Cheviots and North Yorks Moors, and it’s possible we could see some localised accumulations to lower levels.
‘Some freezing rain could affect higher parts of the Pennines for a time too leading to icy conditions. Some snow is possible outside the warning area, although amounts are likely to be small.’
‘The cold air will still be close by through Sunday and Monday.’
Southern parts of the UK will be mostly dry but cloudy, but further north rain, drizzle and some hill snow will continue in places, he added.
‘Brighter conditions with spells of sunshine are likely to develop for many areas on Tuesday before milder and more unsettled conditions begin to move in from the Atlantic during the second half of next week.’
London weather
London is set to be cloudy this morning with rain expected from around 1pm until 9pm this evening, according to the Met Office.
Temperatures will peak at around 5C.
Tomorrow will be cloudy but mostly dry, with some ‘short-lived bright spells possible during the morning’.
Maximum temperatures are once again set to sit around 5C.
