I remember when I knew Angie was a big deal… the audience cheered me & not my hubby, says EastEnders legend Anita Dobson

SOAP legend Anita Dobson can still remember the moment she realised that EastEnders landlady Angie Watts had become a national treasure.

She had just stepped into the VIP section of Wembley Stadium after being invited to watch Queen perform there by her future husband, rocker Brian May.

Then the crowd — who were previously glued to their musical heroes on stage — spotted the queen of The Queen Vic on the big screens and suddenly turned their attention to a dumbstruck Anita.

The actress recalls: “I came in and I was sort of looking around like, ‘Wow!’

“Then they all started clapping and chanting, ‘Angie, Angie!’ And I remember thinking, ‘That’s me!’ ”

“That was the first time it hit me powerfully, because, you can imagine, it was the whole crowd.

“I remember thinking, ‘They’re not cheering Queen at this point, they’re cheering Angie Watts — and that’s ME!

“Then I went back to my little flat in Stepney, like nothing had happened. It was like a dream.

“So it was big leap. I went from zero to 100mph overnight.”

Anita, now 75, made her debut on EastEnders in the soap’s very first episode in February 19, 1985, as the long-suffering wife of Albert Square landlord “Dirty Den” Watts, played by the late Leslie Grantham.

Speaking on Lacey Turner’s We Started Here podcast ahead of the show celebrating its 40th birthday next week, the actress says she was totally blindsided by the celebrity world she found herself in.

That is despite the fact she ended up falling marrying one of the world’s most famous rock stars — the future Sir Brian May — and eventually becoming Lady May.

But when she initially met her husband-to-be in 1986, Anita did not have a clue who he was, and actually became better pals with Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

She said: “I went to a preview of the film Down And Out In Beverly Hills with my then-agent and a kind of boyfriend — I’m not sure if we were on or off at the time.

“Brian turned up and that was the first time we met.

“He was married at the time — I didn’t know that — but he was with his wife.

“She said, ‘I think you’re marvellous in EastEnders’ and then he said, ‘I think you’re marvellous too.

“You should come along and see us at Wembley.’

“I turned round and went: ‘Who the hell is that?’

“And a person behind me said, ‘Don’t you know who that is? It’s only the lead guitarist with Queen.’

“But as a result of that meeting I came to be friends with Fred, and I didn’t really get together with Brian until much later — until all the stuff of life had happened with his marriage and whatever.

“It was Fred I used to hang out with a lot, and Brian kind of introduced me to Fred and Fred kind of gave me back to him, if you like.”

Anita was introduced to the nation by EastEnders when she was 35 and an unknown jobbing actress who had previously juggled theatre work with pulling pints in bars.

She used the landladies she had worked under in pubs around London as her inspiration for Angie, along with a dash of Judy Garland and hints of her own mother.

Her parents raised her in Stepney, East London, where she already had the perfect accent to play the role that provided her big break.

But back in the Sixties and Seventies, opinion was still divided on whether it was better to adopt a posh accent — and Anita had considered ditching it completely.

She left school at 16 and didn’t go to university but got a grant to go to the Webber Douglas drama school in the rather high-class South Kensington in West London.

Anita recalled: “I still had a really bad Cockney accent — you could cut cheese with it.

“Going to a drama school where everybody talked so nicely. I tried to talk like they did.

“My drama teacher said, ‘You can’t talk like that, darling, you just can’t.’

“You have to lower your voice so you have the possibility to do Shakespeare or Chekhov or Ibsen.

“But one thing she said, ‘Never lose your accent — it’s what will make or break you’ — and boy, was she right!

“Because the next thing that happened was EastEnders.”

Anita was also lucky that her parents scraped together enough savings and decided to send her to Italy where she got a makeover and returned already looking more like the Angie Watts viewers would come to know and love.

It even ensured she beat a rival actress to the role.

She recalled: “The reason the other girl didn’t work was she didn’t look right.

‘STORMIEST RELATIONSHIPS’

“They wanted someone that was a bit more ‘chi chi’, looked a bit smarter, like a businesswoman that happened to run a pub.

“So the suit did work and the fact the hair was neat and tidy and I had lots of jewellery — it was the look of somebody in control.

“Angie looked all-powerful like she could control anything. But the one thing she couldn’t handle was her marriage.”

Although she got on famously with co-star Leslie, the TV couple had one of the stormiest relationships in soapland, which was an integral part of the early EastEnders’ success story.

The drama reached a peak on Christmas Day, 1986, when more than 30million fans tuned in to see serial womaniser Den hand his alcoholic wife divorce papers after discovering she had lied about suffering from terminal cancer.

The only reason Den and Angie stayed together was for the love of their daughter, Sharon.

Letitia Dean, the actress who plays Sharon, and Anita called each other “second mother and baby girl.”

Anita said: “I fell in love with Letitia the minute I met her.

“We used to have lots of nights out and she stayed at my flat lots of times.

“We used to go out with the girls — Gillian Taylforth (who plays Kathy Beale) and Sandy Ratcliff — who was Sue Osman.

“We were the four musketeers going out a lot together.”

Anita left the show on May 19, 1988, and has since taken on jobs on stage and screen including her most recent, a recurring role on Doctor Who.

But she has never quite shaken off her former character — the Queen Vic matriarch.

“There will always be a lot of Angie in me,” said Anita. “I am very, very proud of her.”

She tells fellow Albert Square star Ross Kemp, who presents the show: “When I got the part of Pat, like any actor I decided to do a bit of homework.

“I saw this bus conductress on a number 38 bus and she was wearing these most dangly earrings.”

And she told how viewers helped shape the Queen Vic landlady’s look.

Pam explained: “Pat always wears the earrings that fit her mood.

“You know those tool boxes you can get that fold up?

“I had one of those and a wall bracket with dangling earrings, but the interesting thing is most of them came from viewers.

“They’d say, ‘I saw these in the market and I thought they were absolutely right for Pat.’”

In EastEnders: 40 Years On The Square, which airs on BBC One on Monday at 8pm, Ross speaks to a host of the soap’s stars.

They include Letitia Dean, who plays his ex-wife Sharon, with whom he starred in the explosive “Sharongate” storyline in 1994.

He also interviews Shaun Williamson, who played the doomed Barry Evans, as well as Michael Cashman who took on the role of gay yuppy Colin Russell – a revolutionary TV role back in 1986.

And Ross catches up with Gillian Taylforth, better known as Kathy Beale, who was married to Grant’s brother, Phil Mitchell.

Gillian recalled how similar her market-trading character was to herself.

She said: “Coming from a big family – there are four girls and one boy in my family – and we were born in Islington.

“And I used to work up Chapel Street Market.

“My boyfriend at the time had a stall there, so Saturday and Sunday I used to help him out.”

Ross also talked to Adam Woodyatt, aka Kathy’s son Ian Beale, who praised the vision of show co- creator Tony Holland, which helped the soap to endure.

He said: “Tony had mapped it all out years ahead, and we were all based on members of his family. Ian was based on his nephew.”

Bukayo Saka set to miss further EIGHT WEEKS in another devastating injury blow for Arsenal as slim title hopes fade

BUKAYO SAKA is set to be sidelined for a further eight weeks as Arsenal’s injury nightmare intensified.

As the Gunners confirmed that German Kai Havertz was out for the season ahead of undergoing hamstring surgery, it emerged that Saka’s similar injury could prevent him returning until mid-April.

When Saka limped away from the 5-1 crushing of Crystal Palace in December, Arsenal were hoping for him to be fit by next month.

The club published photos of the England ace going through rehab drills during this week’s training camp in Dubai.

But boss Mikel Arteta, now left with only Leandro Trossard, Raheem Sterling and teenager Ethan Nwaneri as fit attacking options with first-team experience, will not take a further gamble on Saka unless he is absolutely ready.

That reluctance to risk Saka, whose explosive push off on his injured right leg is a major part of his threat, could now see the winger staying on the sidelines for up to four months in total.

Meanwhile, the expected bad news on Havertz, the club’s 14-goal top scorer, was confirmed.

Arsenal announced: “We can confirm that Kai Havertz has sustained a hamstring injury during a training session in Dubai last week.

“Subsequent assessments and specialist reviews have confirmed that the injury will require surgery, which will take place in the coming days.

“Soon after surgery, Kai will begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme, which is expected to extend into pre-season preparations for next season.

“Everyone at the club is fully focused on supporting Kai to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.”

Arteta, already without Gabriel Jesus, is also expected to be missing fellow Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli for a month.

He pulled a hamstring in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg defeat at Newcastle last week.

Arsenal sit seven points off Liverpool at the top of the table following their chaotic 2-2 draw against Everton yesterday.

Kim Kardashian is Bianca Censori’s twin as she rocks Skims thong bodysuit

FANS branded Kim Kardashian as Bianca Censori’s ‘twin’ as she rocked a Skims thong bodysuit.

The socialite took to Instagram to share snaps from a new photo shoot.

Many claimed Kim looked like Australian model Bianca Censori[/caption]

Kim, 44, wore a white thong bodysuit as she posed for the camera.

However, many commenters drew a comparison to Australian model Bianca Censori.

One person wrote: “Ok now you look like his wife here!! Ugh.”

Another added: “Whyyyyyy is Kim trying to look like Biance Censori?!”

A third stated: “Censori style.”

While a fourth remarked: “Ummm. Had to do a double take…”

As a fifth chimed in: “I thought this was… Nevermind.”

It comes as The U.S. Sun revealed how Kanye and Bianca have split – days after his vile anti-Semitic outbursts.

Kanye has been staying at the Four Seasons hotel in Los Angeles, while Bianca is living in their new $35million Beverly Hills estate, a source told The U.S. Sun of the newly-split pair.

“Bianca has always stood by him but things have not been good after his rants and she’s still at the house,” a source claimed.

Meanwhile, The Daily Mail reported Bianca will be filing papers in the coming days, and will receive a $5million payout in the divorce.

TMZ reported that the two have “reached out to divorce attorneys.”

The U.S. Sun exclusively reported how the pair appeared to argue before her infamous nearly-nude appearance on the Grammys red carpet.

According to actress and social media star Riley Mae Lewis, who was stood feet away from the couple at the music awards show, Kanye West and Bianca’s relationship looked strained.

She told The U.S. Sun she believed the pair may even have been arguing before their stunt – in which Bianca dropped her fur coat to the ground and revealed her nearly naked body.

She said the couple had a weird “energy” around them – and other red carpet goers noticed it too.

Bianca Censori and Kanye West's relationship

Bianca Censori was born on January 5, 1995, in Melbourne, Australia

Before her current full-time job, the 30-year-old started a jewelry company called Nylons after leaving high school.

After working as a student architect for three years, she completed a master’s degree between 2019 and 2020 ahead of moving to Los Angeles.

In a radio interview, a childhood friend of Bianca’s claimed that Kanye slid into her DMs on Instagram.

The rapper reportedly said, “Come and work for me.”

At which point she says the designer moved to LA to join his company Yeezy as the “head of architecture” – and has been since November 2020.

WEDDING BELLS

On Friday, October 6, 2023, The Daily Mail reported Kanye and Bianca wed on December 20, 2022.

The couple tied the knot under a “confidential marriage license” in the state of California.

The two wed in Palo Alto, California, according to the document.

The wedding came just one month after Kanye and Kim Kardashian finalized their divorce.

Riley claimed Kanye even attempted to flirt with her while he was stood next to his disrobed wife.

She said: “The energy between the two seemed off, and a lot of people on the carpet thought the exact same thing.

“It makes me concerned for what their relationship is like behind the scenes.

“When I saw him, he kind of gave me a flirty look even though Bianca was right next to him… the whole situation was weird.”

No wonder EastEnders has lost 27million fans… the BBC’s self-destructive woke will has ruined it & most other TV dramas

Collage of EastEnders cast members.

FORTY years after it started darkening the nation’s mood, the weight of EastEnders’ misery finally got to a suicidal Phil Mitchell last week, when he started talking to a pile of clothes.

Whether he thought they were mum Peggy, brother Grant or the agent he probably hasn’t spoken to since 1995, I don’t know.

BBC
EastEnders could once command an audience of up to 30million viewers, as the show did on Christmas day 1986, it now survives on about a tenth of that number[/caption]

But there was decades of despair in the tormented old slaphead’s voice when he screamed: “Enough! Enough! Enough!”

An echo of my own thoughts as the soap celebrates its landmark birthday in characteristically cheerful mood with Phil having a mental breakdown, Nigel confronting his Alzheimer’s diagnosis and Alfie no longer able to get it up on account of prostate cancer.

Or at least, that’s what he’s telling Kat.

The show’s obsessively PC agenda also remains so carved in stone that we recently discovered Elaine’s dead husband John was a closeted gay man (tick) who was in love with a drag queen (tick tick) who’s HIV+, (tick tick tick).

A combination that may well represent the most EastEnders back story of all time.

If it still looks and sounds depressingly smug and similar to the 1980s version, one thing has changed beyond all recognition.

Whereas EastEnders could once command an audience of up to 30million viewers, as the show did on Christmas Day 1986, it now survives on about a tenth of that number.

In due course, I’m sure, the BBC News Verify unit will blame this astonishing rate of attrition on Donald Trump, Brexit and global warming.

However, I’m sticking with the theory it’s largely down to competition, market forces and the bone-brained 2001 decision to broadcast the show four times a week which led to a catastrophic over-supply of everything from blackmail stories and infidelities to members of the living dead (Den, Cindy, Kathy) and ghosts like Jaime Winstone who is currently haunting the Square as a youngish version of “Peggy Mitchell”.

These are the obvious signs of a desperate show that knows it’s in a bit of trouble.

The subtler one is that EastEnders no longer has storylines, as such — it has sagas that are stretched out over months and years rather than weeks, as they used to be.

These have recently included: the saga of Linda’s alcoholism, the saga of Tommy turning into a little turd, the saga of Phil’s mental breakdown, the saga of Bianca’s abduction and the ongoing saga of Sonia’s fertility and reproductive organs which has produced some of the most gynaecological dialogue in EastEnders’ history.

“It’s good news,” she exclaimed recently, with what seemed like genuine excitement.

A worried woman sits in a chair looking at a laptop.
BBC
EastEnders no longer has storylines — it has ongoing sagas that are stretched out over months such as Sonia’s fertility[/caption]

“The drugs have stimulated my ovary production efficiency and the doctors are really happy with my follicle growth.”

Little wonder then that an astonishing 27million viewers have thought “sod that” and turned instead to the more carefree charms of Towie and the internet.

SELF-DESTRUCTIVE WOKE WILL

A pattern that, if it were to continue, would mean it’s 50/50 whether EastEnders will still be around to celebrate its 50th birthday.

If it was axed next week, though, the BBC1 soap would still have won the most pyrrhic TV victory of all time because, over the course of those 40 years, it’s not just bent Coronation Street to its grim, self-destructive woke will, it’s done the same thing to almost every mainstream drama on television which, just like EastEnders, mostly now start from the assumption that all men are either weak or evil and women are long-suffering.

As a result, you can forget any idea it’ll cut back the number of episodes or hope for a mass cull of misery guts in the Queen Vic inferno during next week’s live episode.

The only character it’s scheduled to lose, in fact, is pregnant Sonia who’ll probably be thrilled to leave after this week’s update from a midwife: “You’ve suffered a premature rupture of your membranes. We need to be on the look-out for any flu like symptoms, any nasty discharges and . . . ”

Enough. Enough. Enough.

Random TV irritations

THE Last Leg imagining there’s anything edgy about repeatedly calling Donald Trump a “c***”.

BBC1’s Virdee getting lost in its diversity lectures and cop show cliches. Mel B confusing being a tactless old boot with “just being honest”.

And 50-year-old outward bounds bore Bear Grylls announcing he wants to live to the age of 200.

So why not just watch all eight episodes of Celebrity Bear Hunt and feel like you have? It’d spare the world an awful lot of bad telly.

Ronnie O’Sullivan responds to criticism after late Welsh Open withdrawal

2024 Xi'an Grand Prix - Day 5
Ronnie O’Sullivan pulled out of the Welsh Open less than 24 hours before he was due to play (Getty)

Ronnie O’Sullivan insists he is prioritising his ‘health and well-being’ after his late withdrawal from the Welsh Open this week.

The Rocket has not played since the Championship League in January when he withdrew before his final group game. During the tournament, he lost three of his four matches and snapped his cue after missing an easy pink in a 3-2 defeat to Robert Milkins.

O’Sullivan then pulled out of the Masters at Alexandra Palace and the German Masters in Berlin.

Less than 24 hours before he was due to play in the Welsh Open this week, O’Sullivan withdrew from the tournament in Llandudno.

O’Sullivan’s decision sparked criticism from fans who had purchased tickets to watch him play, while his call to pull out of the tournament means he has now withdrawn from six ranking tournaments this season.

CBSA Snooker Superstar Invitational Tournament 2025 - Day 2
Ronnie O’Sullivan has withdrawn from six ranking events this season (Getty)

On Thursday night, O’Sullivan released a statement to fans which read: ‘I realise plenty of people who bought tickets to some recent snooker events will have been frustrated when I withdrew, so I just wanted to say sorry to those of you who’ve been disappointed with me having to pull out of those tournaments.

‘I’ve been trying to prioritise my health and well-being, which sometimes means making last-minute decisions not to play. It’s never an easy decision and I hate letting people down.

‘I’m doing what I can to get back to my best, and I’m grateful for all your support and understanding.’

O’Sullivan’s return date remains unclear but his next scheduled game is in the World Open against Stuart Carrington in China on February 23.

Speaking about his decision to withdraw from the Masters in January, the 49-year-old told Eurosport: ‘It was a nightmare decision really to make, if you’d have asked me Sunday if I was ready to play I’d probably have been ok to play. But it’s such a massive tournament.

‘I’d been on a three-week trip away playing and I just think I exhausted myself, a lot of pressure while I was away. The build-up of all that just got a bit too much really.

‘I lost the plot on Thursday, snapped my cue, so that’s unplayable, so I knew at that moment in time the right decision was to not play and such a big tournament that I thought whoever was to come in should have had at least a couple of days notice.’

When asked about his snapped cue, O’Sullivan said: ‘It was in the bin, one of them wheelie bins, but my mate said we can’t leave that here, so he got it out and brought it with us.

‘I’ve got a couple of other cues that I can start practicing with because there’s some tournaments coming up. I’m going to continue to play so I need to get used to the cue now.’

Irish teenager breaks Romelu Lukaku record to become youngest European goal scorer

Shamrock Rovers starlet Michael Noonan has broken records in becoming the youngest goal scorer in European club competition history with his winning goal against Molde.

At 16 years and 197 days, his second-half goal saw him become the youngest scorer in modern UEFA club competitions since group stages began in 1992, not including preliminary rounds.

The teenager beats the record previously held by Romelu Lukaku, set by the Belgian back in 2009.

Kildare-born Noonan was making his debut for the Hoops as they picked up a priceless 1-0 victory in their Europa Conference League play-off first leg away in Norway.

It leaves the Irish side in control ahead of the second leg in Dublin next week, within touching distance of the last 16 of the competition.

Noonan was handed a starting role on Thursday night and was also involved in the incident that saw Molde reduced to 10 men with Valdemar Lund sent off for the hosts.

His big moment came as the game approached the hour mark.

Mats Dahli, once of Manchester United and Cardiff City, was caught in possession by Dylan Watts who found Noonan in the box to slide home from close range.

Rovers have enjoyed a remarkable European campaign, becoming the first League of Ireland side to reach the knockout stages of a major competition.
