Snooker star Gary Wilson, 39, swaps sport for something he ‘never plays’ after slamming his own ‘dreadful’ season

GARY WILSON will use a different cue this week as he swaps 22 balls for ten.

The North East potter is a very self-critical individual and he says he has had a “dreadful” time on the snooker table this season.

Not only is he out of the running for the money-spinning Players Championship and Tour Championship in Telford and Manchester respectively.

But he is not set to be a seed for the 2025 World Championship in Sheffield, which means he has to go through two rounds of qualifying.

The gap in his calendar means he can fly to Bosnia for the six-day European Open Pool Championship – which starts on Tuesday – and take on the elite in a different discipline.

The 39-year-old plays unseeded Kuwaiti Abdullah Alqattan on Wednesday.

Wilson, 39, told SunSport: “I never play pool. Only whenever a tournament comes around, I might get a game in beforehand.

“It does mess with the snooker. It’s two different sports. It’s like a table tennis player playing tennis.

“You can’t really play the two of them at the same time. Not if you want to compete at the top level of either.

“It might be a hobby that I dip into. The only way I’ll reverse that – and play more pool – is if I’m even more dreadful than I already am at the moment and slip down the rankings.

“Or if I cannot make any money from snooker.

“That would be the only point I retire from snooker and might dip into a bit of pool.

“Any form of pool is more frustrating than snooker in some ways. Because there’s a lot of luck involved.

“Everybody can play to an extent. It’s generally an easier game to play than snooker.

“Everybody on the Nineball Tour is very friendly. It’s a different atmosphere to snooker.

“The odd character in pool might think, ‘here’s a snooker player coming in, thinking snooker is much harder than pool, we’ll show him it’s just as hard’.

“That’s the furthest from the truth – snooker players don’t think that at all. We know how difficult it is to play at the top level of the game.

“I have the utmost respect for the guys at the top of any of the pool disciplines.”

It is not unusual for snooker stars to make the switch and appear in both sports.

Ronnie O’Sullivan, the seven-time world snooker champion, played in two Mosconi Cups, the sport’s version of the Ryder Cup, but he was on the losing side for Europe against the United States.

Jimmy White and Alex Higgins once wore European team colours and Steve Davis was involved in 11 competitions between 1994-2004, winning titles twice in 1995 and 2002.

Asked if a leading snooker player could ever win a NineBall event given the standard at present, Wilson replied: “It’s achievable if you have a massive dose of luck in these tournaments.

“There’s an outside chance that if I get a bit of a run going, have a bit of luck, I can go really deep in a pool event.

“It’s not beyond the realms that a snooker player could put a bit of work in and still compete.

“You do have to put some practice in, know about the equipment a bit more thoroughly, practice for more than a day or two before a competition.”

Aristocrat and lover ‘killed newborn daughter while on run from cops after putting relationship before life of baby’

A RUNAWAY aristocrat and her lover killed their newborn daughter after putting their relationship before the life of the baby, a court heard.

Constance Marten, 37, and Mark Gordon, 50, are accused of living off-grid with the tot after their four previous children were taken into care.

She and Mark Gordon went on the run from police, court told[/caption]

Jurors at their retrial heard the baby died while living in a tent in the South Downs with hardly any clothes or means of keeping or remaining warm”.

Marten and Gordon deny manslaughter by gross negligence and causing or allowing the death of a child.

The Old Bailey heard the couple were convicted of concealing their daughter’s birth and perverting the course of justice at an earlier trial.

Prosecutor Tom Little KC said the case “involves the entirely avoidable death of a young baby”.

He continued: “A young baby girl who undoubtedly would still be alive if it was not for the reckless and ultimately grossly negligent conduct of the two defendants in the dock.

“They were the parents of that young baby girl, but they put their relationship and their views of life before the life of that little baby girl.

“Rather than act in the obvious best interest of a vulnerable baby, because all babies are vulnerable when they are but some days old, they decided as they had often done before that they knew best, they knew better than anyone else.

“They decided to ignore the advice they had previously been given and decide that in the middle of winter and in obviously dangerous conditions they would deprive their baby of what she needed – warmth, shelter protection, food and ultimately one word – safety.”

The court heard Marten gave birth to the baby in secret without seeking any medical assistance.

Her and Gordon then “essentially went off-grid” and lived in a tent with “hardly any clothes or means of keeping or remaining warm or dry and with scarcely any food”.

The couple failed to register their daughter’s birth and moved from location to location while carrying the tot in a bag for life, it was said.

As cops intensified the hunt against them, Marten and Gordon’s “desperation” allegedly increased along with the “risks and dangers to the baby”.

Jurors heard that despite the temperature dropping, they decided to camp in “obviously dangerous conditions” with “totally insufficient and inadequate clothing and equipment for the baby”.

Mr Little said: “The weather got colder after a few days but even at the outset the risk of hypothermia was  blindly obvious.

“The need to try to keep warm in wet and damp and cold conditions in a small, thin and flimsy tent which was not made for winter even in England also created obvious suffocation risks both with items in the tent and with themselves.

“So, as I have said, was the risk and reality of hypothermia. and It was this grossly negligent and obviously dangerous conduct that caused the death of their baby daughter.

“After the baby died, which must have been in January 2023, the defendants did not hand themselves in but immediately or seek any sort of medical assistance immediately as you might have expected if this was some form of accident.

“Instead they remained off-grid, trying to hide for a number of weeks, leaving the body of their dead baby in a shopping bag covered in rubbish, whilst that baby decomposed.”

Gordon is currently not attending the retrial, jurors heard, but Marten is in the dock.

The couple deny manslaughter and causing or allowing the death of a child.

The trial continues.

Lee was visibly shocked by the revelation and exclaimed ‘wow’

The final question in the game is regarded to be so tough that on average only 1% of the UK population would get it right.

However, viewers were left horrified on Saturday at a contestants response when Lee chatted to them before the start of the show.

Joyce said she was supposed to be officiating at the funeral of her friend’s partner but told her friend to move it back a day.

“My friend’s partner sadly passed away recently and she gave the day’s date as the funeral.

“And I said ‘perhaps not’, so we are doing it tomorrow instead” Joyce explained.

“Wow, I thought the wedding story was bad” replied a shocked Lee as he referred to a previous contestant who was missing her brother’s wedding.

He added: “The pressure on you now after all that not to go out on the 90% question and watch it all go up in smoke.

“That’s a bad choice of words – to watch it all go wrong.”

He then wished her good luck before starting the show with the first question.

However, Joyce was knocked out after she failed to answer the second when contestants had to choose the odd one out.

Lee turned to Joyce and said: “What else were you going today, there was nothing else to do was there.

“Oh hang on you were supposed to be doing a funeral.

“I mean, I don’t want to be harsh but you’ve gone out so early.

“I think you could make it.”

Hardest Quiz Show Questions

Would you know the answers to some of quizzing TV's hardest questions

  • Who Wants To Be A Millionaire – Earlier this year, fans were left outraged after what they described as the “worst” question in the show’s history. Host Jeremy Clarkson asked: “From the 2000 awards ceremony onwards, the Best Actress Oscar has never been won by a woman whose surname begins with which one of these letters?” The multiple choice answers were between G, K, M and W. In the end, and with the £32,000 safe, player Glen had to make a guess and went for G. It turned out to be correct as Nicole Kidman, Frances McDormand and Kate Winslet are among the stars who have won the Best Actress gong since 2000.
  • The 1% Club – Viewers of Lee Mack’s popular ITV show were left dumbfounded by a question that also left the players perplexed. The query went as follows: “Edna’s birthday is on the 6th of April and Jen’s birthday falls on the 15th of October, therefore Amir’s birthday must be the ‘X’ of January.” It turns out the conundrum links the numbers with its position in the sentence, so 6th is the sixth word and 15th is the fifteenth word. Therefore, Amir’s birthday is January 24th, corresponding to the 24th word in the sentence.
  • The Chase – The ITV daytime favourite left fans scratching their heads when it threw up one of the most bizarre questions to ever grace the programme. One of the questions asked the player: “Someone with a nightshade intolerance should avoid eating what?” The options were – sweetcorn, potatoes, carrots – with Steve selecting sweetcorn but the correct answer was potatoes.

Viewers flocked to social media with one stating: “Can you push your fellas funeral off for a day I’m going to be on #the1percentclub.

“I hope she goes out on the first question.”

Another added: “Well she can do the funeral now.”

While a third remarked: “So you’ve got one missing a wedding and one missing a funeral lol.”

The 1% Club airs on ITV and is available to stream on ITVX.
