Bafana Bafana moved one step closer to qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a 2-0 win over Benin in the Ivory Coast on Tuesday evening.
Two second-half goals from Lyle Foster and Jayden Adams were enough to give Hugo Broos all three points. With Tuesday’s win, South Africa might only need two wins in their final four matches to qualify for the World Cup.
The win will sure be celebrated but with uncertainy. Bafana Bafana could be docked three points for fielding an ineligible player (Teboho Mokoena) in their match against Lesotho last week.
Bafana midfielder Mokoena was booked in their opening World Cup qualifier match against Benin in 2023, and the fourth qualifier against Zimbabwe last year. The Mamelodi Sundowns star was presumably supposed to serve a one-match ban against Lesotho however, he featured against Likuena.
FIFA or CAF has yet to comment on the matter, but Lesotho and Nigeria have complained.
