The Blitzboks, who were looking to win the Hong Kong Sevens title for the first time in 30 attempts, will have to wait another year as they came up short yet again in the Cup competition after a poor showing across the board this weekend.
The Blitzboks were grouped with Australia, New Zealand and Uruguay in Pool B and they could only muster up one victory from those three fixtures.
The South Africans started strongly with a 40-7 win over the Uruguayans, but followed that up with a 26-7 defeat to Australia on Friday. Those results meant the Blitzboks had to come out victorious in this final pool game against New Zealand on Saturday morning to advance to the Cup quarter-finals.
However, the All Blacks Sevens side put on a top all-round display to win 17-7, thus eliminating the Blitzboks out of the main event.
All results taken into account, the Blitzboks qualified for the semi-finals of ninth-place playoff, where they met and beat Uruguay 33-7. They will now take on African rivals Kenya in the ninth-place playoff at 6am on Sunday morning.
WILL THE BLITZBOKS EVER WIN THE HONG KONG SEVENS?
