Major update on Homebase administration as 14 more store rescues confirmed – see the full list

OVER a dozen more Homebase stores have been rescued by the owner of The Range, The Sun can reveal.

The DIY chain entered administration in November but was partially rescued by billionaire Chris Dawson, owner of CDS Superstores, the parent company of The Range and Wilko.

Dawson’s intervention aimed to preserve “up to” 70 stores, safeguard 1,600 jobs, and retain the Homebase brand.

However, this left 74 branches and approximately 2,000 employees facing an uncertain future.

Just a week later, Teneo, the administrators for Homebase, placed the 74 stores up for sale.

Analysis by The Sun at the time revealed that just 57 stores were excluded from the sale listing, suggesting they could have been part of CDS’s rescue plan.

To date, however, CDS has only confirmed the rescue of 12 stores, leaving the exact number of saved locations unclear.

Now, The Sun can reveal that The Range’s owner has acquired an additional 14 sites, some of which have already reopened under new branding in the last eight days.

Former Homebase stores in Ashbourne, East Dereham, and Staines reopened under The Range banner on February 14.

On Friday (February 21), three more stores in Bicester, Huntingdon, and Reigate reopened their doors as The Range.

A further eight stores are set to reopen between February 28 and March 21.

Ex-Homebase sites in Eastbourne, Oxford, and Morecambe will welcome shoppers again on 28 February.

These will be followed by stores in High Wycombe, Selby, and Bodmin on March 7.

Finally, Homebase locations in Edinburgh (Craigleith) and Horsham will reopen under The Range branding on March 21.

Once these additional stores reopen, the total number of former Homebase locations confirmed as acquired by The Range will rise to 26.

In January, Homebase closed 20 stores, seven of which had already been acquired by supermarket giant Sainsbury’s in August 2024.

A further 34 stores are due to close by the end of February, including two purchased by Sainsbury’s last year in Glenrothes and Inverurie.

Last month, B&Q agreed to buy five of the chain’s branches that were for sale.

Currently, 26 Homebase stores remain on the market, while the future of another 30 stores that were never listed for sale remains uncertain.

What is happening to the stores bought by CDS?

CDS Superstores previously said it would buy “up to 70” Homebase shops.

It has also taken on the Homebase brand and relaunched its website with thousands of products up for sale.

It is in the process of re-purposing and opening some of the former Homebase stores under its The Range brand.

The new stores feature products usually found in The Range but some contain “Garden Centres by Homebase”.

Others locations feature “Kitchens by Homebase” spaces.

CDS Superstores has announced its ambition to open three new stores per week in the coming months, with plans to launch at least 50 locations by the end of April.

Pictures of one of the new stores in Bournemouth were revealed when it opened in January.

CDS said the move to take on “up to 70” Homebase sites would see 1,600 staff keep their jobs.

Why are DIY chains struggling?

It has been a tricky time for home improvement chains, both large and small.

It comes as shoppers have been cutting back on spending following the pandemic.

Plus, the recent turmoil in the housing market has meant that homeowners aren’t as focused on DIY projects as they once were.

In the spring, Kingfisher, which owns B&Q and Screwfix, revealed that annual profits had slumped by more than a quarter.

The company reported a 25.1% drop in underlying pre-tax profits to £568million for the year to January 31, 2024.

Window and door specialist Everest called in administrators in April, leaving customers in the dark about their orders.

Last year, the group had previously cautioned profits would slip after a 36% drop in pre-tax profits from £1billion to £611million in the 12 months to January 2023.

Rival Wickes also reported a 31% fall in profits to £52million on flat revenues of £1.55billion for 2023.

Windows and doors company Safestyle collapsed into administration in October last year.

The company has a manufacturing site in Wombwell, near Barnsley and 42 sales branches and depots across the country.

Flooring retailer Tapi recently struck a multimillion-pound rescue deal to save the Carpetright brand and dozens of stores last month.

Tapi purchased 54 of the chain’s stores and two warehouses in a pre-pack administration deal that saved 300 jobs.

However, the deal did not include 200 other stores which all closed their doors.

GK, real name Grace Keeling, won over a new legion of fans with her I’m A Celeb appearance and her sweet friendship with Rev Richard Coles, ultimately coming in fifth place.

Now the Saving Grace anchor, 25, who is also the youngest ever Loose Women panellist, will take to the Red Carpet at the upcoming BRIT Awards.

She will front Radio station KISS’ coverage live from the entrance to the major London event at The O2 Arena on March 1.

After her new role – which will see her interview the top chart stars of the year – was revealed, she opened up on her nerves to KISS hosts Jordan Banjo and Perri Kiely.

In her signature witty style, she joked: “I think it might be too big a responsibility

“I’m going to go in, heckle, hope for the best and grab consensually.

“That’s what I’m going to do.

“Full glam, put a bit of Real Housewives on to calm the nerves, Prosecco and then hairspray my feet so they don’t hurt in heels.”

Talking of getting star-struck, she added: “I’ll be fangirling over Sabrina [Carpenter] – she is an icon, like a Barbie doll.

“I hope she’s nice. I will force her to answer all my questions.”

It comes after another career high saw GK star in Netflix series Missing You.

Her bank balance is being bolstered by the career switch-ups, too.

Figures showed how Grace bagged a pretty penny last year, with her assets going from £485k to over £1.2m.

Her bank balance has increased by over £712k from 2023, leaving her company with a whopping £1.1m in 2024.

Who is GK Barry?

GK Barry amassed more than a million followers on TikTok in just over a year during the first UK lockdown in 2020.

Grace Keeling, better known as GK Barry, is a 25-year-old social media influencer.

She rose to fame during the first Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, creating a TikTok account and posting short vlogs showcasing her day-to-day life.

Although she originally intended on staying low-key, she gained a large following in no time at all.

By August 2020, only five months after starting her account, she had already hit 100,000 followers, reaching more than a million in just over a year.

She now has over 4.5million followers across her social media platforms.

After completing a degree in film studies from Nottingham Trent University, Grace furthered her education with a master’s in digital marketing.

While at Nottingham Trent, she worked on the set of BBC series Doctors and the Netflix film Hood, as well as creating content for ShawMind — a charity working to promote mental health awareness.

Grace is known for her podcast, named The Saving Grace Podcast.

On the show she invites celebrities and influencers to have a chat about life and the latest trends, as well as any embarrassing stories from their past.

In May 2024, Grace said she was dating a female footballer.

Then in June it came out that the soccer star in question plays for England.

The Sun revealed that Grace and Charlton Athletic striker Ella Rutherford, 24, are getting serious — they’ve met each other’s family and holidayed together.

A source exclusively told The Sun: “GK has been seeing Ella for a while but they are very much official now.

“They grew even closer on holiday in Benidorm and GK has met all her family.

“She’s really happy and they are having so much fun together.”

Now she’s set to become a multi-millionaire after the show, thanks to her witty one-liners and down-to-earth nature.

“I’m A Celebrity is going to be fantastic for GK,” brand and culture expert Nick Ede told The Sun.

“I think she could earn up to £5 million in the next couple of years.

“She’s going to be a big earner!”

Liverpool will probably win Premier League because they have Darwin Nunez to come off bench, says Reds title winner

RONNY ROSENTHAL has urged Kop flop Darwin Nunez to silence the hate mob by firing Liverpool to the title.

The striker was slammed by boss Arne Slot and ridiculed by fans after his horror miss in Wednesday’s draw at Aston Villa.

But former Anfield star Rosenthal — who also blew a sitter against Villa 33 years ago — declared: “If you’re Nunez, you have only one option — to show what you can do when you’re given the chance.”

Liverpool can go ELEVEN points clear at the top of the Premier League with victory at Manchester City today.

And Rosenthal, 61, predicted: “Liverpool will probably win the league because they have a top striker like Nunez to come off the bench.”

On how the Uruguayan will bounce back from his miss, Rosenthal added: “I don’t think it will affect him. This is part and parcel of the game. Anyone, even the biggest striker in the world, can miss.

“This is not the point, though — the point is to see things over a player’s whole career.

“You know, these things will happen every day, any day, anywhere.”

However, Nunez’ blunder sparked a rocket from Kop boss Arne Slot, who accused his £64million forward of being lazy.

Slot fumed: “You can miss a chance but you cannot miss out on work-rate.

“It is not part of the job of a No 9 to slow down in work-rate. That is something we will talk about.”

That blast prompted an immediate reply from Nunez, 25, on X.

He fumed: “You never see me give up,” before vowing “to give it my all until my last day at Liverpool”.

On Slot’s public blast, Rosenthal said: “I’m not here to object to the manager.

“But if you’re Nunez, then you know you have only one option — that’s to show what you can do when you’re given the chance.

“He doesn’t need to be going on Instagram. My opinion is still that he has the quality.

“He will never be a scorer like Mo Salah but Liverpool will probably win the league because they have the luxury of a top striker like him to come off the bench.”

Israeli Rosenthal’s own astonishing moment came when he beat Villa’s offside trap, took the ball round the onrushing keeper and had a tap-in from ten yards — only to crash his shot against the bar. Liverpool went on to lose 4-2.

But Rosenthal insisted he was unfazed by the incident, adding: “It does not affect me. I’m happy to talk about this whenever. It can happen to anyone. Obviously, if you have the worst miss in the top level, then people will talk about that instead of about a worse one at a lower level.”

Nunez arrived at Anfield from Benfica in 2022 but fans remain unconvinced.

He has scored 24 goals and produced 13 assists in 86 Premier League appearances.

However, his miss provided his doubters with more ammunition as they continue to call for Liverpool to offload him.

Rosenthal, though, says the lack of consecutive starts could be one of the things causing issues for Nunez.

He believes the 6ft 2in powerhouse still has a huge role to play this season as Slot’s side look to claim Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup glory.

The ex-winger said: “He’s not a regular starter but I still think Liverpool need someone like him. Nunez will stay in my opinion unless they find something better — but you know it’s not that easy.

“He’s got the quality as a player. He just needs the chance to play more. If you are limited on chances, then obviously it’s much more difficult to be consistent.”

But the former title winner added: “It will happen eventually that he will leave Liverpool. It’s difficult to say when.

“I still think that if he plays more, he will give more end product and his statistics will improve, in my opinion.”

Rosenthal left Anfield himself in 1994 and enjoyed three years at Tottenham before finishing his playing days at Watford.

He has since achieved great success as a football consultant based in London.

The icon regularly works with some of the biggest clubs on the planet and helped discover Cristiano Ronaldo, along with stars such as Vincent Kompany and Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang.

And he also revealed how he even tried to get a teenage Nunez a move to Europe long before his eventual switch from Penarol in Uruguay to Almeria in Spain six years ago.

On spotting him as a kid, Rosenthal added: “Nunez is one of a thousand cases where I found players with potential when they are cheap.

“I called him years ago when he played in Uruguay to try to bring him to a better league. He referred me to his agent — but I did try.

“He’s one of many players who I can see quicker than football clubs can.”
