UK weather: Rain turns into SNOW as Met Office warns Brits to ‘be careful’ in -10C cold snap – check map of locations

THE Met Office has warned Brits to “be careful” as rain and snow are predicted to continue through the weekend.

Much of the UK has seen “anticyclonic gloom” over the past week causing dull skies with some areas not having seen the sun in more than a week.

Rain and potentially snow are expected in some places, particularly around East Anglia and Lincolnshire today, and into Scotland towards the beginning of next week.

In a post on X, the forecaster said: “Rain is likely to turn to snow at times across parts of East Anglia this evening.

“Take extra care if you are planning to travel.”

The UK Health Security Agency has issued a cold weather alert covering parts of the northeast of England, Yorkshire and The Humber.

Temperatures dropped to -6.6°C in Altnaharra in the Highland region of northern Scotland last night.

But they could rise to 13°C or 14°C by the middle of the week with sunshine in a number of areas on Monday.

The predicted temperatures are well above February’s average with 6°C the usual monthly average in Scotland and 9°C in southern England.

Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey said it will be a “noticeable shift” after the last fortnight which was below average.

He added it is not likely to be record-breaking as February’s highest temperature was 21.2°C recorded in 2019 in Kew Gardens.

And more western areas are likely to see some rain during the week while eastern areas are forecast to stay drier.

Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said he did not expect any national records to be broken but some areas could go 10 days without any sunshine which is “near record-breaking”.

Mr Morgan said: “We’ve basically got this battleground taking place over this weekend between cold air across Scandinavia and Central Europe, which is affecting eastern parts of the UK, but towards the west is a little bit milder.

“The Atlantic is trying to shift that cold air out of the way, pushing from west to east across the UK, but it’s a very slow process and it will take until the middle of the coming week for conditions to turn much milder nationwide.”

He explained the gloom “dominating” the UK over the last two weeks has been caused by a “large anticyclone”, or high-pressure system, which has been sitting over Scandinavia bringing cold wind from the east.

“Those cold conditions have picked up a lot of moisture across the Baltic and North seas, and those moist conditions have led to a lot of clouds,” he added.

“That’s why we haven’t seen much in the way of sunshine in most of the UK recently.”

UK 5 day weather forecast

Today:

A cloudy day for many, though some sunny spells in the northwest as well as the southwest initially.

Outbreaks of rain across Northern Ireland and showers affecting eastern Scotland, wintry over hills. Breezy and rather cold for most.

Tonight:

Staying drier further south. Patches of frost developing.

Monday:

Rain in the north easing, but further outbreaks reaching Northern Ireland around dusk. Cloud breaking in the south to allow some sunshine.

Windy in the west and north. Rather cold.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

‘There is no easy game as every team is getting closer to each other’, says Tottenham’s Luana Buhler

LUANA BUHLER has no qualms about overcoming big obstacles in football – having battled back from two serious knee injuries in her teens.

Today the versatile Switzerland defender, 28, wants Tottenham to pull off the big challenge of dispatching Arsenal in their WSL derby duel.

It was at the age of 15 playing with Swiss boys team FC Schotz, and then at 19 in for women’s side FC Zurich, that Buhler suffered anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures.

For Buhler, who began her senior playing career at FC Zürich in 2016, having the support of family and friends and the determination to come back stronger to fulfil her football dream was key.

The 54-capped Switzerland, who spent five years at German side Hoffenheim before her 2023 Tottenham move said: “The first injury was (sustained whilst playing) with a boys’ team.

“It was at an age where you grow a lot as a girl but maybe don’t have the support yet that was needed back then.

“At that time, the support with athletic coaches, even strength training, wasn’t even a topic yet, so I think that was something that was also caused a little bit by the circumstances.

“With my second one (ACL injury) I was quite lucky with the medical staff and everything around being developed much better.

“I was in a women’s environment already (at FC Zurich) and there I had more professional help during my rehab

“That also helped me to come back in a better state and quite strong.

“When you have an injury that big, all you just want to do is come back and play again.

“I was quite young when those injuries came.

“It was probably one of the toughest times during my career. It challenged me emotionally and physically.

“But these were also the times where I would learn the most about being patient and showing resilience.”

Resilience is something that Buhler and her Tottenham team-mates have had to rely on at times this season since losing their last derby clash with Arsenal

Following that 3-0 home loss last November her side, who are sixth in the WSL, have won five and drawn one of their last nine games across all competitions.

Buhler sees this term as one of ups and downs for Robert Vilhamn’s aces who are yet to beat the Gunners away in the top tier.

But the defender is confident Tottenham can give Arsenal a run for their money at the Emirates this afternoon, having beaten them for the first time in a top-flight duel in December 2023.

She adds: “We could see when we won our first (WSL) game against Arsenal, that the gap is, in my opinion, closing (in these games).

“There’s no easy game anymore because every team is getting closer to each other.

“We want to challenge them as much as we can.”

Today’s 12:30pm clash could see Buhler, who was born in Lucerne, central Switzerland, battle her national team-mate Lia Walti.

Like Buhler, the tenacious midfielder played in Germany’s top-flight for Turbine Potsdam before making a move to the WSL and joining Arsenal in 2018.

Since then Walti has won three trophies with the Gunners, who are third in the league including a WSL title back in 2019.

Buhler said: “Lia is a really great player and also a leader for us in the national team.

“As a team we are really lucky to have her. On the other hand she’s a tough player to play against.

“There are so many good individual players at Arsenal who will challenge us as a team.

“I’m really looking forward to it because it’s the greatest thing to go against the best players in Europe.”

Prior to joining Tottenham Buhler, who is studying for a masters degree in business, has experienced playing in the Champions League with her former clubs FC Zurich and Hoffenheim.

And long with Walti the Tottenham ace is looking forward to making history with her national team, when Switzerland hosts the Women’s Euros for the first time this year.

Her side, currently ranked as the 23rd best side in the world, will take on Norway in their group stage opener on July 2 in Basel.

And Buhler hopes the tournament will lead to greater support for girls’ grassroots teams in her country and improving the infrastructure of the women’s game there.

The Switzerland international said: “We’re still a little bit behind in the whole development of infrastructure and grassroots teams.

“I hope this can give a real boost to women’s football and sports in general for girls and women in Switzerland.

“There are not enough opportunities for girls in comparison to the boys. “There is, on basic levels, infrastructure missing and even teams are missing.

Tottenham hope to produce a repeat of the performance that led to their 1-0 defeat of Arsenal in the top tier in December 2023[/caption]

“I know from girls in my hometown that they still struggle to find a (football) team with whom they can participate.

“That’s one of the first things we need to change, to have those infrastructures for all the boys and girls at the same level.

“I would like to see more visibility of women’s football in general.”

On Saturday, Casey was taking a break at the front of the villa where the cast usually go to smoke vapes when he began to feel dizzy.

A source said: “All of a sudden Casey felt wobbly and then passed out.

“He bashed his head on the way down and everyone rushed to attend him.

“He came round quite quickly and was checked over by the medics but then had to wear a plaster and bandage on his head.

“It meant he was pulled from filming for hours.

“Everything is manic at the moment getting the content needed working up to Monday’s final so losing such a key cast member as Casey wasn’t ideal to say the least.”

Casey is coupled up with Gabby Allen and the duo are considered likely to make the final on Monday night at 9pm on ITV2.

A show source said : “Casey is absolutely fine. He was quickly checked over by the team’s dedicated on site medic.”

Meanwhile tonight viewers will learn which of three vulnerable couples left the villa on Friday after a vote put their place in the villa in jeopardy.

After voting for their favourite pair, fans left Elma Pazar and Sammy RootCatherine Agbaje and Omar Nyame and Harriett Blackmore and Ronnie Vint vulnerable.

However, they were told the surviving couples wouldn’t be in charge of who to send home.

Instead, the dumped islanders will return to cast their vote.

The villa was left reeling as the three couples realised their fate is totally out of their hands.

Harriett yelled: “Well that’s us gone then.”

One viewer said: “I swear to god the dumped islanders most take Elma & Sammy with them!”

Another added: “These dumped islanders better do the right thing and save Catherine and Omar.

“Could give AF about who leaves but it absolutely cannot be Catherine and Omar?”

Love Island All Stars 2025 official line-up

Love Island All Stars is back on TV for season 2.

Here we take you through the line-up of all the Islanders who are in the villa so far.

Bombshells

Each series brings with it a string of hot single bombshells making their epic entrance into the villa.

Here’s who has joined the villa so far:

Someone else stated: “Letting dumped islanders decide is crazy.”

Another wrote: “If the dumped/ex islanders from this season don’t make the smart decision and send Elma and Sammy home I will go to South Africa and fight the producers for messing it up.”

Death in Paradise fans convinced long-running show has ‘run its course’ after major character’s exit is hinted at

STUNNED Death in Paradise viewers were left reeling after the latest episode as a fan favourite looks set to leave the show.

The surprise departure has left some questioning whether the Caribbean crime series, which is now in its 14th series, has much gas left in the tank.

The news floored his colleagues[/caption]

Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington) has been a fixture of the Saint Marie crime-fighting team from the very first episode.

On Friday, he learned he was to be “phased out” due to budget cuts, with even his idyllic corner of the world not safe from economic strife.

He told his colleagues at the beach bar: “I’m afraid they can, and they are.”

DI Mervin Wilson later said: “I’ve never met a guy like him.”

Viewers aren’t happy, with one writing on X: “They can’t just get rid of Selwyn as the commissioner in death in paradise what will he do?”

Another said: “I like the new guy, Mervin, on Death in Paradise. Hoping they won’t get rid of the commissioner. I adore Selwyn Patterson.”

A third posted: “If they remove the Excellent role of #CommissionerSelwyn, #DeathInParadise will no longer be a show worth watching. It will be Trash.

Of course, if any show can handle a big name exit, it’s Death in Paradise.

It has reinvented itself multiple times over the years, successfully switching its leading man time and time again.

It began with Ben Miller as Detective Inspector Richard Poole in series one and two, then Kris Marshall took over as Humphrey Goodman; he was followed by Ardal O’Hanlon as Jack Mooney, Ralf Little had a four-series run as Neville Parker, before Don Gilet was handed the baton as Mervin Wilson.

And Mervin’s tenure kicked off with a big surprise as one of his colleagues, new officer Benjamin Brice, died just minutes into the episode.

The episode opened with a monologue from Benjamin, as he reflected on his childhood struggles and his journey toward finding purpose in life.

He recalled feeling out of place in his own family.

His mother wanted him to focus on chores, while his father, a car thief, attempted to involve him in criminal activities.

Benjamin found solace in his studies and ultimately discovered his true calling at the Saint Marie police academy.

Speaking directly to the camera in a heartfelt social media post, he said: “When I completed training, I’d never felt so proud of myself. In the morning, I’ve got my first shift with the team here on Saint Marie – and I can’t wait.

“The reason I’m telling you all of this, making this post which is something I never do, is because I want you to know that if you’re feeling lost, you don’t need to go through what I did.

“You just need to find your purpose in life, like me. Once you do, nobody can take that away from you.”

But the next morning, Sergeant Naomi Thomas was puzzled by Benjamin’s absence.

Her concern quickly escalated when the station received a distressing phone call from a woman who discovered a body dressed in a police uniform.

In a devastating twist, Benjamin was found face down in the dirt where his body was discarded in a roadside ditch, still carrying his backpack for his first day on the job.

The brutal and unexpected nature of Benjamin’s death left viewers reeling.

Netflix has been forced to change the location of its glamourous post-Bafta party after a fire ripped through the original venue.

It will no longer be held at celebrity hotspot Chiltern Firehouse after a blaze on Valentine’s Day resulted in the evacuation of around 100 people.

Instead, Netflix has moved its afterparty to luxury hotel The Twenty Two in Mayfair’s Grosvenor Square.

The London Fire Brigade said that 20 fire engines and about 125 firefighters were involved in tackling the fire on Chiltern Street in Marylebone on Friday.

A firefighter at the scene told the PA news agency the five-star hotel and restaurant will likely need a ‘large refurbishment.’

This afternoon, A-listers including the likes of Demi Moore and Cynthia Erivo will grace the Bafta red carpet.

Demi, 62, is nominated in the leading actress category and has already picked up gongs at the Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes for her role in body horror film The Substance.

Cynthia, 38, who played Elphaba in movie musical Wicked, is also a nominee in the leading actress category.

She will be joined by her co-star Ariana Grande, who has received a supporting actress nod for her role playing Glinda in the reimagining of L Frank Baum’s stories.

Cynthia and Demi will go head-to-head with Mikey Madison, who plays a sex worker in Anora, Karla Sofia Gascon for Spanish language musical Emilia Perez, and Saoirse Ronan for The Outrun – a film exploring mental health and addiction.

Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez, stars of Emilia Perez and Bafta nominees, are to present prizes at the awards, with actress Gascon unconfirmed among those attending, amid criticism over a number of tweets.

The 52-year-old has stepped back from promoting the film after the X posts, made between 2019 and 2024, about Islam, the death of George Floyd and diversity at the Oscars resurfaced following the musical’s release.

The main event will be presented by Doctor Who and Rivals villain David Tennant for the second year running.

However, he previously told Metro he was worried about ‘breaking’ the whole thing.

‘I definitely have the advantage of this not being my day job,’ David elaborated further.

‘It’s a lovely thing to be asked to do. It’s a huge privilege and it’s very giddy-making.

‘But I’ve sort of got a bit of a free pass because nobody expects me to be any good at it.’

Other attendees at this year’s ceremony include leading actor nominees Ralph Fiennes, Sebastian Stan, Hugh Grant, Adrien Brody, Colman Domingo and Timothee Chalamet – as well as Kate Winslet, who stars in Bafta-nominated film Lee, and Jesse Eisenberg, whose film A Real Pain is nominated.

British pop group Take That will perform their chart-topping hit Greatest Day, which features in the film Anora, and Wicked star Jeff Goldblum is set to play the piano during the In Memoriam segment.
