Horror moment kayaker is swallowed WHOLE by massive humpback whale before being spat out by 50ft, 50,000lb beast

THIS is horrifying moment a kayaker is swallowed whole and then spat out by a 50ft humpback whale.

Adrian Simancas and his dad Dell were kayaking in the choppy waters off the coast off Punta Arenas in Southern Chile on February 8, when the mammoth animal bit off more than he could chew.

Without warning, the 24-year-old who was calmly paddling the waves in his inflatable yellow kayak at around 3pm local time was suddenly engulfed by the jaws of the humpback whale.

The first sign of the 50,000lb beast was when part of its open mouth emerged from the water behind the oblivious kayaker.

With the force of the whale’s jaws, Adrian tipped onto his left side and was taken into the depths by the closing mouth and torrent of water.

His anguished father who filmed the terrifying moment helplessly watched on before Adrian resurfaced after being spat out by the animal.

Dell shouted to his shocked and panicking son telling him to remain calm and to use his kayak as a raft.

He could be heard saying: “Stay calm, stay calm, don’t get back into the boat, head for the shoreline, I’m coming.”

As he paddled towards him while the whale disappeared from view, he continued to urge him: “Stay calm, grab my rope, grab my rope, if we head for the shore everything will be fine” before steering him away from the area.

Recalling the moment on a Chilean TV programme, Adrian who was unharmed in the incident said: “I saw something blue and white passing close to my face like on one side and on top but I didn’t understand what was happening.

“The next minute I sank. I thought I had been eaten.”

Dell, a 49-year-old Venezuelan-born anaesthetist who lives in Chile, added: “I turned round and I couldn’t see Adrian and that was the only real moment of panic.

“He disappeared for about three seconds and then shot out and that’s when I calmed down because I saw he was safe.”

Dell who was also uninjured, revealed that rather than be deterred by the horrifying moment, it was actually a change in the weather that saw them cut the trip short and return to land.

The pair had gone on a Saturday morning trek before unpacking their inflatable kayaks from their backpacks to take to the freezing waters of the 350 mile-long Straits of Magellan.

The strait is considered the most important natural passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

The pair are said to already be planning their next kayaking adventure[/caption]

It is believed that the whale mistook Adrian in his kayak for a fish that is part of its diet.

Despite the shock, the pair are already planning their next kayaking adventure, though admittedly with more precautions.

Experts have previously spoken out about the rarity of such an event with one saying the chances of being swallowed by a whale as “1-in-1 trillion.”

It came after veteran US lobster diver Michael Packard ended up inside a humpback’s mouth for around 40 seconds off Provincetown, Massachusetts in June 2021.

Are humpback whales dangerous to humans?

Humpback whales can grow to as long as 50ft and weigh about 36 tons.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, their global population is about 60,000.

They feed in polar waters and migrate to tropical or subtropical waters to breed and give birth.

Their diet consists mostly of krill and small fish, and they usually use bubbles to catch prey.

Attacks on humans by humpback whales are extremely rare but their size and weight means interactions can be harmful.

They are solitary animals and will rarely be close enough to humans to cause any impact – positive or negative.

Humpback whales cannot physically eat a person due to their incredibly small throats and all their food is filtered through the baleen plates in their mouths which are in place of teeth.

Anything too large that enters the whale’s mouth will be spat back out.

Jooke Robbins, the director of Humpback Whale Studies at the Centre for Coastal Studies in Provincetown told The Cape Cod Times that as humpback whales feed, their mouths open and billow out in a parachute-like manner, obstructing their vision.

Incidents of humpback whales injuring swimmers and divers are exceedingly rare, if not nonexistent Ms Robbins said, adding: “It is not something I have heard happening before”.

The incident left him with nothing more than a dislocated knee after spitting him out.

He gave the thumbs-up from his Cape Cod hospital bed afterwards as he revealed he thought at first he had been attacked by a great white shark before “feeling around and realising there was no teeth.”

Michael, 45 at the time, added: “Then I realised: ‘Oh my God, I’m in a whale’s mouth and he’s trying to swallow me. This is it, I’m going die’”

Admitting his thoughts turned to his wife and two boys then aged 12 and 15, he continued: “All of a sudden he went up to the surface and just erupted and started shaking his head.

“I just got thrown in the air and landed in the water. I was free and I just floated there. I can’t believe I’m here to tell it.”

‘He’d jump at the opportunity’ – Steven Gerrard tipped to become manager of Championship promotion-chasing team

STEVEN GERRARD would jump at the chance to take over at Blackburn Rovers.

That is, according to his former team-mate Danny Murphy.

Danny Murphy believes Gerrard would jump at the opportunity to manager Rovers

John Eustace sensationally quit Rovers on Thursday to become Derby County’s new manager after the Rams sacked Paul Warne last week.

Rovers are fifth in the Championship table and well and in the play-off hunt – but Eustace has departed for a club sitting just outside the second-tier’s relegation zone, separated only by goal difference.

Blackburn were stunned to see Eustace – who only replaced Jon Dahl Tomasson at Ewood Park a year ago – activate his release clause.

Edwood Park chiefs are now chasing a new gaffer as they push for promotion to the Premier League.

And former Liverpool star Murphy believes it would be the perfect job for Gerrard – who departed his role at Al-Ettifaq last month.

Speaking to Spin Genie, Murphy said: “I could really see Steven at Blackburn.

“I think he would jump at the opportunity if he was offered the job.

“It’s a great location in terms of where he is from and they have some good young players and are really pushing in the right direction.

“He might consider what he has learned in Saudi and who is making the decisions at the club.

“I’m of the mindset that all managers are improving when they are in roles and he would’ve definitely improved at both Aston Villa and in Saudi.”

Murphy added that perhaps the Villa job came “too early in his managerial career, even though he started well there”.

The former Fulham star said: “He would have learned a lot of lessons from that and with the Blackburn job, I think he’d jump for the opportunity.”

But Rovers are now thought to be targeting a move for ex-Wolves boss Gary O’Neil as Eustace’s replacement.

Gerrard was odds-on favourite to land the tricky Derby job, before former Rams player Eustace took it.

Eustace made 62 appearances across two spells as a player for the Pride Park side and is now tasked with saving his side from relegation.

Gerrard, meanwhile, has also been tipped to potentially return to Rangers to replace under-fire Gers boss Philippe Clement – if the Belgian is sacked.

The Anfield icon did bring the Scottish Premiership to the Ibrox during his first managerial stint in 2021.

Ex-Scotland midfielder Derek Ferguson even claimed Gerrard could sensationally team up with Wayne Rooney in the Rangers dugout.

Ferguson, 57, told Ibrox News: “I quite like the fact that Rooney has put himself out there in terms of managerial jobs, albeit it’s not worked for him.

“Imagine Gerrard coming back to the club as manager and Rooney as his assistant. Something crazy like that, you know?”

Move over burgundy – fashion editors reveal how they wear ‘tricky’ pale pink, PLUS a £1,900 bag dupe from M&S

WHILE burgundy dominated winter, it’s now time to make way for pink.

Sorbet shades are synonymous with spring, but this year, icy powder-pink is going to be bigger than ever.

Influenced by catwalk designers Miu Miu, Chloe and Bottega Veneta (and, of course, good witch Glinda), the high street is already packed with the must-have colour.

You may think pastel shades will wash out your skin tone – however, the cooler undertones of the pink can actually complement the skin’s natural pinkness.

And if your skin has warm undertones, you can still choose pale, just go for peachy-coral shades.

Here, the Fabulous fashion team shares how they’ll be wearing pale rose this season, and how to style it.

Emily Regan, 25, Fashion Assistant

Step out of your comfort zone like Emily and embrace pink denim[/caption]

I’ll admit, pink has never been my go-to colour, and the only splash of it in my wardrobe right now is a pair of pyjamas.

But with spring just around the corner and pink set to dominate the high street, it feels like the perfect time to step out of my comfort zone.

This fuzzy pink knitted vest from COS is a fantastic layering piece with endless versatility.

I’ve styled it simply over a white T-shirt, but it would look just as chic layered over a crisp shirt or even a dress.

Taking things a step further, I’ve embraced the colour with these pink denim jeans.

The wide-leg cut is exactly my style, and the mid-pink hue pairs effortlessly with the softness of the knit.

Pink teams well with brown, so I’ve finished off the look with these suede boots from H&M and a bowling bag from Zara, which I can even personalise with my initials.

I like pink, but only when it’s pale.

With dark features and a helping hand from some fake tan, powder-pink suits me better than brights, which are too bold for my sartorial tastes.

During transitional seasons, I love a crew-neck knit like this cosy cashmere jumper from Next

Warm beiges and rich chocolate browns warm up its cool undertones – like this Zara jacket I love that I bought a few weeks ago.

I’ll finish the look with this bag from M&S that’s a double for the Alaia Le Teckel bag – which costs £1,900 – even down to the clasp that holds the straps together.

The snake print complements the pink and natural shades, while breaking up the blocks of colour with pattern.

I love pink, in fact I’m wearing it right now – after getting my colours done last year, I was told pink was one of my go-to shades, so I love wearing it!

Dusty pale pink in particular is really having a moment this year, with the likes of Burberry and Loewe sending models down the runway in the shade.

And of course, that has trickled down to the high street, with the shops full of the pastel colour.

This T-shirt from Reserved is super-cute and only £12.99 – an absolute steal.

Perfect for spring, I’ve paired it with this white midi skirt, leopard-print ballet flats and jacket for an of-the-moment look with just a slight nod to the pink trend.

Hottest fashion trends of 2025

Fabulous’ Fashion Editor Clemmie Fieldsend has shared the biggest trends from the high street.

The East/West Bag

Baguette bags have had a good run, after returning from the 90s shoulders of Sarah Jessica Parker to modern fashion icons like Hailey Bieber.

In 2025, the East/West bag is a similar but elongated shape and has long, thin straps that are easy to throw over your shoulders.

They’ve been on runway models’ arms at nearly ever designer’s shows – think Burberry, Givenchy and Bottega Veneta – and are hitting the high street now, too.

Powder pink

Bright fuchsia pink had its day after the release of the Barbie film in 2023 and didn’t appear last year – and now the more polished and expensive looking pale shade is taking over for 2025.

Pantone may say that it’s the year of Mocha Mousse, but the catwalks say otherwise! From Prada to Erdem, the subtle look was all over the spring/summer catwalks, worn head-to-toe or on its own.

If the sugary shade is too girly for you, then look to sharp suiting for a androgynous take on the colour.

The shell jacket

The 80s classic is back, but with a sleek and minimal new twist for 2025.

We all know that for most of spring we’re likely to see rain, and your practical coat of choice should be a cagoule jacket.

Depop revealed one of its big trend predictions for this year is retro sportswear, with surges already seen in ‘80s windbreakers’.

Seen everywhere from the stylish streets of Copenhagen to the Miu Miu catwalk, now mums who have an emergency raincoat crumpled underneath their pushchair are very much in fashion!

The turn-up jeans

Whilst jeans shape remains the same for this year and barrel-legs are still going to be seen everywhere, the way we’re styling them is different.

This season, transform your wide-leg, baggy denims into turn-ups.

And for this look, size doesn’t matter, so while deep turn-ups are a hit from jean trend-leaders Citizens of Humanity, a slight fold is still just as good – but only as it’s just one single fold.

Peep-toe shoe

Get your pedicures booked in sharpish, as this season your toes are the main event.

After a long hiatus, the peep-toe has been welcomed back into the fashion fold, with brands like Hermes, Miu Miu and Tory Burch showing plain and embellished footwear all with the tiny hole.

From mules to pumps and clogs (yes clogs will be around too!), there are lots of different styles that are set to sweep the high street, but they will all have peep-toe.

Sheer blouses

See-through looks have always lived on the catwalk, but have rarely filtered into everyday life – until now.

Designers Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford loved sheer looks on their SS25 catwalks and M&S even had sellout success with its black sheer pencil skirt last season.

Expect to see more sheer looks lining supermarket aisles and high street shops in the form of skirts, tops and frocks.
