Alan Carr makes Channel 4 comeback almost a decade after chat show ended for new series with Countdown star

HE shot to fame on Channel 4, now Alan Carr is returning to the place where he became a star hosting Chatty Man.

The comedian, who’s gone on to make shows for ITV and the BBC, is going back to his roots to host new show, Hidden Genius.

The funnyman has teamed up with Countdown’s Susie Dent[/caption]

He’s teaming up with Countdown words whizz Susie Dent on the project which is a search for the nation’s hidden brainboxes.

Talking about the big reveal, Alan said: “I have never ever been called a genius believe it or not, but I am fascinated by those people who do get labelled genius.

“Is it a gift, a curse, or a burden? I am so excited about ’Secret Genius’, it’s going to be absolutely fascinating not only finding out what makes these people tick but also challenging stereotypes and prejudices along the way.”

Alan, whose last ongoing series with C4 was Chatty Man from 2009 to 2016, can usually be found renovating houses with his old mucker Amanda Holden on the Spanish Job and The Italian Job.

But as he takes on his new challenge, he’s swapped her for a very different kind of partner in the form of lexicographer and etymologist Susie.

She said: “I’m delighted to be part of the search for Britain’s undiscovered geniuses alongside Alan.

The thought of meeting extraordinary individuals—who may have been overlooked in the past or may not realise the full extent of their talents—is hugely exciting.”

It’s estimated that there are thousands of people in the UK with the brains of a genius, from a variety life and backgrounds. But they may not realise they have a gift.

Made in consultation with British Mensa, this six part series will see people from each of the four regions of the UK come to take part in immersive and ambitious challenges that will test all aspects of their brain power.

Alan and Susie will explain the tasks and games – no matter how complex and mind-bending- and encourage viewers to play along and find out if they too have what it takes to be a genius.

Alan Carr's career to date

Alan Carr is a household name, but how did the comedian get his start?

  • Alan began pursuing a career in stand-up comedy in the early 2000s, moving up to Manchester from Northampton and regularly performing at the city’s Comedy Store. He was even named City Life’s Newcomer Of The Year in 2001.
  • He then became a regular fixture on the small screen following stints on Jimmy Carr‘s beloved panel show 8 Out of 10 Cats and the documentary series The Law of the Playground between 2005 to 2006.
  • Alan went on to find further fame as the co-host of Channel 4’s The Friday Night Project, which ran from 2006-2009 alongside shamed comic Justin Lee Collins, before going solo and fronting Alan Carr’s Celebrity Ding Dong in 2008.
  • Since then, Alan has fronted coverage of some of the UK’s biggest events, such as Crufts in 2018 and the Royal Variety Show in 2021, as well as appearing on an episode of The Great Celebrity Bake Off and becoming a regular judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race.
  • Alan now fronts a number of beloved series, including The Italian Job – a renovation show he hosts with Amanda Holden – and Interior Design Masters – a reality competition show that pits amateur designers against each other.
  • In 2023, Alan wrote and starred in the autobiographical drama Changing Ends which depicts his young life growing up in Northampton in the 1980s. The series was an instant hit and returned to ITV for a second series in 2024.

New footage of Arne Slot’s interaction with Michael Oliver emerges as mystery surrounds Liverpool manager’s red card

NEW footage of Arne Slot’s interaction with Michael Oliver has emerged amid the Liverpool manager’s red card mystery.

Slot was given his marching orders after full-time as his side shipped a late goal to Everton in the Merseyside derby.

Liverpool were 2-1 up when James Tarkowski blasted home an equaliser in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

Tempers then flared at the final whistle as Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure clashed in front of supporters.

The midfielders were both sent off by referee Oliver as teammates attempted to cool things down.

And as the referee went off the field, he was approached by Liverpool boss Slot.

But as the pair shook hands, Oliver quickly reached into his pocket before producing a red card for the Dutchman.

Slot was left shocked by the decision, with his assistant Sipke Hulshoff also receiving his marching orders.

The pair will now miss Liverpool’s next league match against Wolves.

Yet mystery still surrounds the circumstances of Slot’s red card, with the gaffer unable to speak to the press due to Premier League rules.

However, new footage has emerged of the incident.

A camera from the side caught the moment Slot approached Oliver, with things appearing innocent on the surface.

The footage showed Slot extending his hand as Oliver walked past him.

The referee took it but appeared to continue walking in a straight line.

Slot then seemed to momentarily hold on to Oliver’s hand in an attempt to speak to him.

But this caused the official to spin around before reaching into his back pocket to brandish the red card.

It remains unclear what words passed between Slot and Oliver, leaving the full circumstances of the sending off in mystery.

Fans reacted to the new footage on social media.

One said: “Oliver is wearing a mic, release the audio.”

Another declared: “Literally a red card for hand shaking.”

One noted: “Slot invited this red card on himself.”

Another added: “What is this?”

Pregnant Olivia Bowen hits back at body-shamers as she shows off baby bump in sexy lingerie set

PREGNANT Olivia Bowen has hit back after being body-shamed for wearing sexy lingerie.

The Love Island star, 31, only announced she was expecting her second child last week and it didn’t take long for trolls to target her.

The lingerie helped boost her confidence[/caption]

In a bid to boost her self-esteem, Olivia slipped into a black lace set from Boux Avenue and took some stunning photos.

Last night she took to Instagram to address the critical comments and plugged the undies ahead of Valentine’s Day.

She said: “I remember when I first got pregnant I posted a picture of me in some lingerie, someone was like ‘you’re pregnant, you’re about to be a mum, you can’t wear that’. And I was like how does that even work?

“Do you know how babies are made, first of all. Second of all, I probably need to feel my most confident while pregnant. There are so many emotions in my body telling me I’m not attractive and I’m not enough.

“So lingerie is one of the things that make me feel so much confidence and give me that boost. So ladies, pregnant or not, make yourself feel good, you deserve to wear this lingerie, don’t let anyone tell you any different.”

Olivia and husband Alex Bowen, whose son Abel was born in June 2022, announced their baby news on social media.

They wrote: “A moment, a love – baby no2 – we’re waiting for you.”

Their famous pals rushed to congratulate them, with Fran Parman commenting: “So happy for you both!! Congratulations.”

Vicky Pattison remarked: “OMG…. the best news ever, Congratulations guys x”

While fellow Love Island star Rosie Williams wrote: “Ahh congratulations beautiful family.”

Earlier this month, Olivia revealed she and Alex were trying for another baby – two years after welcoming Abel.

She told OK!: “Me and Al really do want another child, but I guess it’s just when it happens. We are trying for one, but I don’t want to put too much pressure on why it’s not happening or when it will.

“But I would love another one and Alex would as well, but two is the limit! It’s mad enough with one.”

Last March she told how she feared having a second child after losing nearly a litre of blood during her first labour.

She told Closer: “Alex and I sometimes talk about having another child, but I’m honestly scared to do it again. I feel quite conflicted about birthing and how it will go.

“It’s a hard one and I feel for any woman that goes through it and it doesn’t go the way that she had hoped. Abel’s birth really affected Alex too – he’s such a sensitive soul – and he’s nervous about me going through that again.”

The couple found love on the second season of Love Island when they came runners-up in 2016. They became the first couple from the hit reality TV show to get married when they tied the knot in 2018.

Mum battered at school gates by rival parent who screamed ‘I’ll f****** kill you’ breaks silence on ordeal

A MUM who was battered at a school gates by a rival parent has broken her silence on the ordeal.

Jessica Kitching, 25, was collecting her daughter from school when she launched the savage attack on Charlene Harkin – known as Charlie.

Kitching pulled the 37-year-old to the ground by her ponytail and knelt on her chest in front of horrified school kids.

The thug then repeatedly kicked the mother-of-three in the face as she begged her to stop, Lancs Live reports.

As Kitching was dragged away by a pal, she yelled out: “I know where you live. I’ll f***ing kill you.”

Charlie described how traumatic the vicious attack had been for her family.

She told MailOnline: “This has been a complete trauma for all of us.

“I have had to pull my three kids out of that school because I never felt we were safe.

“I have had to take six months off work.”

The pair’s two children were friends but had fallen out during the holidays.

Kitching pleaded guilty to assault occasioning ABH but was spared jail as her daughter would suffer.

She was instead handed a 30 week sentence, suspended for 12 months.

Preston Crown Court was told the horror attack unfolded in Lancaster in September 2023.

Charlie was taken to hospital with grazes and bruises to her face and a suspected hairline fracture on her nose.

In a statement, she said she was embarrassed and humiliated to have been attacked on the school run in front of other parents and children.

The mum told the court she considered changing her child’s school as a result and was also left terrified that Kitching would come to her home.

Since the attack the children have played out together and there have been no further incidents, she added.

The court heard Kitching, who has no previous convictions, was ashamed of her vile actions.

As well as a suspended sentence, she was ordered to complete 15 days of rehabilitation activities and complete 60 hours of unpaid work.

Sentencing, Recorder Ayesha Siddiqi said: “This happened near a school and in the presence of children.

“You were unable to control your behaviour in front of the children.

“She must have been terrified by being pulled to the floor and kicked by you. There was the use of a shod foot as a weapon.

“Your behaviour that day was appalling.”

Arsenal fans joke that Liverpool should get POINTS DEDUCTION after Everton brawl – with Gunners setting ‘precedent’

ARSENAL fans have pleaded with the Premier League to hit Liverpool with a points deduction following their post-match brawl in the Merseyside Derby.

Tempers flared as Liverpool and Everton players came to blows following James Tarkoswki’s late equaliser in the last derby at Goodison Park on Wednesday night.

A brawl, seeming sparked by an incident between Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure, saw both players sent off by Michael Oliver and Liverpool boss Arne Slot shown red for his reaction towards the referee.

The heated scenes were a throwback to derby days of yore, with many fans pleased have a taste of old-school football during the 2-2 draw.

However, Arsenal supporters have taken a different view of the incident, jumping at the opportunity to try and claw some points back off title rivals Liverpool in the way of a points deduction.

Gunners fans online were quick to point out that Liverpool should face a hefty points punishment for the violence at full-time, citing their own points deduction back in 1990.

Arsenal were docked two points back then after a feisty brawl broke out during their 1-0 win over Manchester United.

Taking to social media, one Arsenal fan wishfully plead: “Hi @FA_PGMOL if you’re wondering how to handle Liverpool’s disgraceful behaviour against Everton – well!!!

“It’s a points deduction as the precedent has been set by the FA. (in 1990)”

While another added: “Premier League needs to seriously consider giving Liverpool a points deduction after those disgraceful scenes of thuggery after the final whistle at Goodison Park tonight.”

A third posted: “Disgraceful scenes at FT, think there must be at least a 20 points deduction to Liverpool at least.”

And a fourth wrote: “Points deduction for Liverpool. Only possible punishment. Disgraceful.”

Of course there is more than a hint of sarcasm and tongue-in-cheek in the comments from the Arsenal fans.

But make no mistake, there’s not a single Arsenal supporter that wouldn’t be delighted to close the gap on their title rivals.

Arsenal currently trail Liverpool by some seven points and have a mountain to climb in the last 14 games of the season.

And their title charge just got a whole lot harder after it was revealed that Kai Havertz has sustained a hamstring injury that is expected to see him miss the remainder of the season.

That leaves Mikel Arteta with just three first team attacking options in out-of-form loanee Raheem Sterling, 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri and Leandro Trossard.

The Gunners have already lost Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus to injury in recent weeks and months.

Premier League Darts tiebreaker rules: Is there sudden death played and how many legs do you have to win by?

BIG time darts continues TONIGHT as Premier League Darts heads to Glasgow for night two.

The likes of Luke Littler, Luke Humphries and Michael van Gerwen will all be vying to win Premier League Darts in May.

File photo dated 03-01-2025 of Luke Littler. Phil Taylor has backed Luke Littler to break his record of 16 world titles but says the 17-year-old will have to overcome "Man Utd syndrome" to do it. Issue date: Wednesday January 15, 2025. PA Photo. See PA story DARTS Taylor. Photo credit should read Zac Goodwin/PA Wire.
Luke Littler is the defending Premier League Darts champion
Zac Goodwin/PA Wire.

But first, they’ve got to get past 17 nights of action across the UK and Europe before heading to London in May.

Like most of the tour calendar, you have to win a certain number of legs to win the match.

Unlike the PDC World Championship, it is impossible that you could win more legs than your opponent, but still exit the tournament by losing more sets.

SunSport have the lowdown on all things format, tiebreaks and sudden death legs.

What is the Premier League Darts format?

The first 16 rounds of the tournament will see seven matches per night, with each match being best-of-11 legs, or first to six legs.

The number of legs needed to win increases as the tournament reaches its conclusion where the first person to win the most legs out of 21 (first to 11) will win the entire tournament.

  • Nights one to 16: Best of 11 legs (first to six)
  • Semi-final: Best of 19 legs (first to 10)
  • Final: Best of 21 legs (first to 11)

When is there a tiebreak and sudden death?

During Premier League Darts, there are no tiebreaks or sudden death legs.

Whoever reaches six legs first is the victor.

We saw a great example of this during Michael van Gerwen and Luke Littler’s clash last week, as Mighty Mike edged out a close contest 6-5 against the teenage sensation.

At least 12 injured as gunman armed with Kalashnikov rifle throws grenade into packed bar in Grenoble before fleeing

A GRENADE was thrown into a packed bar by a man with an assault rifle in France leaving 12 injured before the gunman fled.

Six people were also seriously injured in the chilling attack on Wednesday night in Grenoble’s Olympic Village and two were left in a critical condition.

Prosecutor François Touret de Coucy said: “A person came in, threw a grenade, didn’t say a word, it seems, and then fled.”

The assailant did not use the Kalashnikov-type assault rifle that he reportedly had when he struck shortly after 8pm local time.

Mayor of Grenoble, Eric Piolle, said he condemned the “criminal act of unprecedented violence that occurred in a business in the Olympic Village district”.

The grenade’s explosion shattered the windows at the front of the bar and sent glass flying across the establishment as people were drinking.

Those injured were left covered in blood in the parking lot underneath survival blankets in the cold winter night as emergency services treated them.

Prosecutor Touret de Coucy said: “There’s nothing to make us think it’s linked to terrorism”.

He labelled the attack an “act of extreme violence” that “may be linked to a settling of scores.”

The bar – Aksehir – is named after a town in the Konya Province of Turkey

All the injured were taken to the Grenoble Alpes University Hospital, BFMTV reported.

Grenoble was the host for the 1968 Winter Olympic Games.

I transformed my ugly, tragic council house doors to Instagram-worthy for just £13 using nifty DIY

A COUNCIL house mum-of-four has shown the bargain DIY transformation she completed to take her ugly, ‘s****y’ interior doors to ‘Instagram-worthy’ for under £15.

DIY and upcycling fanatic Rebekah posted a video to her TikTok account, documenting the process of her home makeover.

TikTok / @justbeckii

The home renovation vlogger has previously spoken candidly about her experience doing up her council home, which had been in such a bad state when she’d received it in 2023 she’d cried.

She’d moved into the property with her disabled husband, who was previously an avionics technician in the army, their two sons and two daughters.

She previously told Fabulous the day the family moved in they found broken glass all over the floor, exposed wires and pregnancy tests and rubbish laying around the property.

Forced to accept her dire situation, Rebekah started to post videos of her renovation progress online, and now has a whopping 32,000 TikTok followers.

In her latest clip, she’d taken on the challenge of giving her egg box doors a major glow up, sick of how “tragic” and “depressing” they looked.

Initially hoping she could get away with just a lick of paint, Rebekah soon realised this wasn’t going to be a quick cover-up job.

Using “cheap wood trim from B&Q” to complete her “glorified glueing and sticking project,” the savvy mum set to work.

Whipping out a measuring tape, Rebekah got to work sizing up the door, making sure she didn’t overlap any of her DIY with her door handles.

She then used her measurements to cut out two long and two short pieces of wooden trim, ready to be stuck directly onto her door to create a mock panelling effect.

Opting to start from the top of the door and work her way down, Rebekah used a spirit level to keep everything neat and straight.

She then used a small amount of caulk to seal the edges of her wooden trim together, creating a neat rectangle shape on the face of her door.

Using leftover chalk paint, she covered the door in a beautiful trendy forest green colour.

She revealed to followers in the comments that her project had cost her just £13 in total.

“And just like that we’ve gone from tragic, brown council house doors to somewhat worthy of an Instagram photo,” she told viewers triumphantly.

How to do your council house up on the cheap

  • Take inspiration from pricier shops and head to B&M, Home Bargains for interior decorations.
  • Head to YouTube for easy to follow tutorials on how to decorate rather than paying for professionals.
  • For a quick glow-up for your floors or anywhere with tiles, opt for stick-on vinyl to save on costs.
  • A lick of paint does wonders to make a room feel brand-new.
  • Switch out kitchen cupboard knobs for modern ones instead of buying brand-new cupboards

Viewers react

Rebekah’s fans gushed over her hard work in the comments.

“Great idea! it’s all coming together beautifully, you are doing an awesome job,” one said.

“You’re doing so well,” another affirmed.

“You wanna come do my house when your done? ‘Cause I’m pretty sure after this you can call yourself a professional,” another said.
