Major sports department chain with 50 sites to shut store for good as it launches closing down sal

A HUGE outdoor department chain is closing a store within days – and it’s launched a massive closing down sale.

Decathlon is closing its branch in the Westwood Cross Shopping Centre in Broadstairs, Kent.

It will shut on February 17, leaving Kent without any Decathlon stores, with the next nearest branch located in the Lakeside shopping centre in Thurrock, Essex.

The store, which sells a range of sports equipment and outdoor wear, sits above the Tesco Extra.

The retailer said it is rewarding loyal customers by launching a closing down sale before the store shuts for good next week, although it is not yet clear how much items are reduced by.

Staff are also understood to be being offered new roles within Decathlon.

Locals have taken to social media to share their frustration at the closure, with one saying: “Anything in westwood withers and disappears.”

Another said: “That didn’t last long at all”, while a third added: “Another one bites the dust”.

However, some local residents said they “weren’t surprised” by the closure as Decathlon “doesn’t appeal to the average customer” in the area.

In a statement to local outlet The Isle of Thanet News, a spokesperson for Decathlon said: “It was not an easy decision to close our Broadstairs store, which has proudly served the local community for over three years.

“Our priority now is to support our team members during this transition and offer them new roles within Decathlon should they wish to continue with us.

“To reward our loyal customers, we’ve launched a closing sale, offering a wide range of quality sports equipment at lower prices before the store closes on February 17.”

The Sun has contacted Decathlon for further comment and we will update this story if we hear more.

Decathlon has more than 1,000 stores across Europe, but only around 50 left in the UK, according to its website.

The French sporting goods retailer tends to operate out of large department stores in retail parks or shopping malls, or operates shops inside large supermarkets such as Asda superstores or Tesco Extras.

Last October, it told The Sun that it was broadly reviewing its store network which had led to some closures.

The chain’s store in Forge Retail Park in Telford closed on November 3 last year.

It comes as shop closures have rocked high streets across the UK over the past few years.

There are many reasons a shop might choose to shut a branch, for example the lease might come to an end or it might make sense to move to another location.

But a number of retailers have been hit by reduced footfall and a rise in online shopping since the pandemic, meaning they make less money from physical stores than they used to.

This has been coupled with higher rents, electricity bills and staff costs, which have made it even more expensive to stay open, leading to an increase in closures.

The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year.

Why are retailers closing stores?

RETAILERS have been feeling the squeeze since the pandemic, while shoppers are cutting back on spending due to the soaring cost of living crisis.

High energy costs and a move to shopping online after the pandemic are also taking a toll, and many high street shops have struggled to keep going.

However, additional costs have added further pain to an already struggling sector.

The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury’s hike to employer NICs from April will cost the retail sector £2.3billion.

At the same time, the minimum wage will rise to £12.21 an hour from April, and the minimum wage for people aged 18-20 will rise to £10 an hour, an increase of £1.40.

The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year.

It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year.

Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: “The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025.”

It comes after almost 170,000 retail workers lost their jobs in 2024.

End-of-year figures compiled by the Centre for Retail Research showed the number of job losses spiked amid the collapse of major chains such as Homebase and Ted Baker.

It said its latest analysis showed that a total of 169,395 retail jobs were lost in the 2024 calendar year to date.

This was up 49,990 – an increase of 41.9% – compared with 2023.

It is the highest annual reading since more than 200,000 jobs were lost in 2020 in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced retailers to shut their stores during lockdowns.

The centre said 38 major retailers went into administration in 2024, including household names such as Lloyds Pharmacy, Homebase, The Body ShopCarpetright and Ted Baker.

Around a third of all retail job losses in 2024, 33% or 55,914 in total, resulted from administrations.

Experts have said small high street shops could face a particularly challenging 2025 because of Budget tax and wage changes.

Professor Bamfield has warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector.

“By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer’s household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020.”

Noel Gallagher brutally slams Kendrick Lamar’s Superbowl halftime performance & says ‘he had to switch if off’

NOEL GALLAGHER has slated Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl half-time performance, branding it “nonsense”.

Never one to mince his words, he joined TalkSport to discuss Sunday’s game and give his views about the rapper’s set, which saw cameos from SZA and Serena Williams.

But Noel ranted: “I had to switch it off. It was absolute nonsense. Well, I didn’t watch it all. I just switched it off. There was like 300 people getting out of a car in the first two minutes.

“And it was like, how do they do that?”

The set was the most-watched show of all time, with 133.5million tuning in.

But Noel added: “I don’t like the half-time nonsense and all that. It’s usually artists that I don’t like.

“But the Super Bowl – I do like watching it. And I got invested this season.

“It was a good season, I think – some great games.”

I won’t hold my breath for Oasis doing it next year.

Earlier in the week, The Sun reported that Lamar’s massive ‘a’ chain during the halftime show had a hidden meaning – and fans were blown away when they made the discovery.

Kendrick took the field for the highly-anticipated performance as fans in the stands and millions of viewers at home watched, waiting for his infamous Drake diss track Not Like Us.

When the rapper kicked off his Super Bowl halftime performance at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday, February 9, he was rocking a massive silver and diamond chain featuring a giant “a.”

It was at first unclear what the lowercase letter was referring to.

However, fans quickly made the connection.

In Not Like Us, Kendrick slams his enemy Drake with the lyric: “Why you trollin’ like a b***h? Ain’t you tired? Trying to strike a chord and it’s probably A minor.”

Fans realized the “a” was a reference to “A minor”- and were left in awe by the subtle jab.

“Kendrick Lamar wearing a lowercase A (a minor) chain is diabolical work,” one fan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Originally priced at £15 the pair has been set to offer a near full price saving.

According to the bargain hunter the shoes were found in a Darrington Tesco.

The parent has already posted pictures of her saving to social media so that others have an opportunity to follow in her footsteps.

One person commented: “They should be taken off the shelf when they go this low but they’ve missed this pair so good find!

“They’re not selling them anymore n are getting ready to be sent back, I used to work there and I asked the clothing girls about it.

“Also they used to get sent to charity, which I liked Tescos always doing stuff for charity.”

Someone else said: “When things get reduced to 4p it means they are meant to have gone to charity, they must’ve missed a pair x”

Another put: “Then what happens to them if they get took off shelf do they just get thrown away or donated x”

One person commented: “Uniform is all £2 downstairs and plus more in Altrincham Tesco.”

According to the image, the mum managed to nab the bargain whilst self-scanning her shopping with a handset.

The yellow discount even boasts the £14.96 saving on the screen.

It follows millions of Tesco shoppers being offered bonus Clubcard points worth up to £50.

The offer, which runs until March 9, has invited selected members to take part in its Challengers game.

Eligible customers have received the offering via email or through a banner on their Tesco Clubcard app.

Tristan achieved fame as the first Colombian skater to lift a world crown – in the 5,000m at the 1990 Inline Speed event in her home country.

The mother of five was killed aged 60 at her condominium in Cali, Colombia, in August 2023.

Judges in the same city have ruled that her 59-year-old fiance Andres Gustavo Ricci Garcia murdered her in a fit of rage during a row.

The court heard a single bullet severed Tristan’s aorta, causing her to bleed out within minutes.

Prosecutors told the trial that police had burst into her luxury home after being alerted by worried neighbours.

Cops found Garcia drunk and still holding a gun.

The court heard how friends told police the relationship was torn apart by heated arguments and fights.

And at the murder scene, the door to the room where Tristan was found dead had been peppered with bullets.

Forensic experts said her grazed knuckles and bruising over her eye showed she had fought for her life before being shot.

Prosecutors said Garcia shot her in the back.

Police discovered at the property a semi-automatic pistol, revolver and three tasers, none of which Garcia had a permit for.

Judges found Garcia guilty of aggravated femicide, trafficking and firearms offences.

Prosecutors have called for the maximum penalty of 50 years in prison.

He was remanded in custody for a sentencing hearing. Tristan became a national hero 35 years ago with her World Championship gold in Bello, Colombia.

However she had also gained notable success three years earlier, with gold in the 5,000m and bronze in the relay at the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis, USA.

I have a ‘PhD in kettle decaling’ – I tried 3 viral DIY limescale hacks & there was a clear winner, it only costs 35p

AFTER noticing the limescale build up in her kettle, one woman tried various DIY hacks to tackle it.

She revealed which of the viral cleaning tricks worked best and left her appliance spotless.

In her video, TikTok user Roo (@rooshome) explained that she felt like she had “been drinking pure limescale” anytime she used her kettle.

She decided to try viral DIY techniques for descaling the appliance, beginning with lemons.

Roo sliced up several lemons and placed them in her kettle with water before boiling.

After showing her audience the limescale build up, she joked that she was praying for “a straight up miracle.”

She inspected the kettle after it had boiled and shared her disappointment that there was still visible limescale at the base.

Roo decided to “go in for round two” after turning to Google for suggestions.

“I officially now have a PhD in kettle descaling, I’ve decided that baking soda will work and I’m actually going to let it sit this time for at least half an hour,” she explained.

After leaving it to sit, the TikToker inspected the kettle and found that the hack “didn’t really work.”

She joked that she wasn’t “dealing with regular limescale” and instead called it “teenage mutant ninja limescale.”

Roo explained that she lives in a “hardwater area” and pointed out that the limescale in her kettle is “no joke.”

For her final effort, she decided to pour distilled white vinegar into her kettle.

“At this point I am ready to commit to a lifetime of limescale-y tea but I am not going to lie, this actually turned out OK,” Roo said.

She showed her viewers the much cleaner looking base of her kettle.

The content creator added that she might leave the vinegar in the appliance overnight.

You can pick up a 568 mililitre bottle of white vinegar for just 35p from Aldi.

Cleaning hacks and tips

Here are some tips to help you clean your home like a pro:

TikTok users shared their thoughts on the cleaning hack in the comments section.

“I use vinegar all the time! First time I left it over night because it was so bad! But now I just use vinegar every month and boil it once and dump,” wrote one viewer.

“Just use straight white vinegar and it works the best out of everything. All you have to do is boil the vinegar,” advised another follower.

“Lemons work but you need to leave them in the water in there for a few hours. Same with vinegar. You were too quick!” commented a third person.

“I add like two cups of water and a splash of vinegar,” shared another TikTok user.

“You can put vinegar and hot water and just wipe it off so easily with a brush!” suggested one viewer.

All Stars chucking drinks and yelling ‘shut the f*** up’ would be AXED if they were male – it’s a sexist double standard

AFTER five weeks ‘gravitating’ towards the All Stars prize pot, our weary Love Islanders’ masks are starting to slip.

Once voted “most popular girl”, Elma Pazar has since been slammed by fans as the “rudest contestant in history.

Smirking Elma Pazar swore at Curtis[/caption]

Last night we saw her tell Curtis Pritchard to “shut the f*** up” when tempers reached boiling point over a public vote.

The professional dancer had already faced Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu‘s wrath earlier this series, when she swilled a drink at him for having his head turned by bombshell Danielle Sellers.

More recently, Grace Jackson was guilty of aggressively whispering “shut the f*** up” at Luca Bish after he kissed Samie Elishi during Spin the Bottle. She also turned on Omar Nyame when he got involved, telling him to “shut your mouth”.

Then Grace’s best pal Harriett Blackmore faced heat from the villa for telling Casey O’Gorman to “shut your f***ing mouth” during a tense game of To Be Honest.

Elma’s outburst last night was far from being the worst incident in Love Island history, but it was the latest in a run of aggressive slurs aimed towards the boys with no repercussions.

You can just imagine, if the tables were turned, the girls would be the first to complain if they’d be aggressively sworn at by the opposite sex.

It’s also highly likely Love Island bosses would have stepped in to remind stars of expected behaviour in the villa.

In 2019, Sherif Lanre was axed for accidentally kicking co-star Molly-Mae Hague in the groin during a play fight and then jokingly referring to it as a “c*** punt”.

Since then, Love Island has undergone major reforms to ensure stars’ welfare on and off the show.

I’m always the first to argue reality TV is, in many ways, softer than ever before because what may have aired just ten years ago wouldn’t see the light of day now. And that’s only right.

But what mustn’t be ignored is the intent behind the language used.

It goes without saying the stark difference between dropping the f-bomb and directing it at someone.

However, it feels a sexist double standard for the girls to get away with speaking to the boys like that.

We didn’t even see Ekin-Su get a warning about chucking her drink in the direction of Curtis before storming off.

Maybe the sweltering South African sun has gone to their heads, but perhaps the girls need reminding they are role models to the young people watching this series.

Elma, Harriett, Ekin-Su and Grace all have the opportunity to show arguments can be made without turning the air blue.

Instead, they should show their fans you can prove your point by staying classy, not trashy – maybe just a little bit sassy.
