Fury as Labour poised to let CHINA into major North Sea wind farm despite warnings for national security

LABOUR are poised to let China into a major North Sea wind farm despite warnings it undermines national security and risks sparking a row with America.

Treasury officials have “brushed aside fears” of a hostile state building critical UK infrastructure.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who visited Beijing last month, has been promised hundreds of millions of pounds of investment if the China deal goes through, an insider told The Sun.

They said: “It is madness to let a hostile state install UK critical national infrastructure.

“But as far as the Treasury is concerned, it seems money is more important than security.”

The Green Volt North Sea wind farm is due to be Europe’s largest floating green energy project.

It is a joint venture between the Italian-Norwegian owned Vårgrønn and Japan’s Flotation Energy.

They have selected China’s Mingyang Smart Energy to supply the all-important turbines that turn wind into electricity.

The Chinese turbines are half the price of European equivalents according to industry sources.

Elizabeth Braw, a senior fellow at Atlantic Council think tank in Washington DC, slammed the move as “a bad idea”.

She said: “It is too risky to entrust critical national infrastructure to a company from country that has shown they are not our friends.

“All of us depend on critical infrastructure functioning without disruption and problems and today there are no guarantees when you involve Chinese companies.”

She also warned the move “won’t win the UK any friends in Washington”.

Two government departments have raised concerns but appear to have been overruled.

Ed Milliband’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero warned China could switch off the power plunging homes and oil rigs into darkness.

An assessment concluded the risk was real but the Green Volt site wasn’t big enough to jeopardise UK power supplies.

When it is fully built some 35 turbines will provide up 560 MW of power.

The Ministry of Defence raised separate concerns that the floating structures could be used as spy sensors.

A source said: “If a Chinese company supplies the turbines they have a legitimate excuse to visit any one at any time for maintenance.

“That means they can install almost anything they like at any time.

“The worst case scenario is we have to assume every turbine could then be an antenna intercepting signals intelligence, or a sensor tracking ships or planes.”

A second MoD insider said: “We are absolutely right to be hawkish about China and have a duty to scrutinise risks and raise flags where we have concerns.

The worst case scenario is we have to assume every turbine could then be an antenna intercepting signals intelligence, or a sensor tracking ships or planes

A source

“Ultimately though, this is a wider government decision.”

Mingyang is China’s largest floating offshore wind company. They are in talks to open a turbine plant in Scotland if the Green Volt deal gets approved.

The SNP government in Edinburh gave the factory “priority” status in its Strategic Investment plan.

A government source said: “The fear in the Treasury is that if we don’t get this factory the investment will go to Italy.

“So it’s a question of jobs and growth.”

Green Volt said it was still “identifyin supply chain partners” and vowed to follow government guidance on UK national security.

A spokesperson said: “We are developing the largest commercial-scale, floating offshore wind farm in the world, working to hugely ambitious timelines to deliver the government’s goal of 5GW of floating offshore wind by 2030.

“We are identifying supply chain partners to help us build the wind farm.

“Regardless of which suppliers are chosen, we will comply with any Government regulation and guidance around security of critical national infrastructure.”

Mingyang did not respond to a request for comment.

Earlier, their chief exec Ma Jing said the UK was “a pivotal market for the expansion of our clean energy portfolio.”

It comes after The Sun revealed defence chiefs had been ordered to stop talking in Chinese electric cars over fears Beijing can eavesdrop.

Their fleet of civilian MGs and BYD cars pose a “security risk”.

A Government spokesperson said: “Kickstarting economic growth so working people have more money in their pockets is the number one priority of this Government as we deliver on our Plan for Change – and we continue to welcome investment while always protecting our national security first and foremost.”

‘Capt Coward’ who capsized & fled Costa Concordia ‘after drinking with dancer’ begs to be FREED halfway through sentence

THE captain who fled after capsizing the Costa Concordia cruise ship has begged to be freed just halfway through his time behind bars.

Francesco Schettino – dubbed “Captain Coward” – was at the helm of the £400million vessel which claimed 32 lives when it sank 13 years ago.

Schettino, 64, had reportedly been drinking with a dancer on the ship before the disaster struck in 2012.

The former captain was sentenced to 16 years behind bars in February 2015 for multiple counts of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck, abandoning his passengers, and dereliction of duty.

Schettino has reportedly now petitioned the Italian courts to let him out of jail early, per ANSA.

The disgraced captain has reached the time limit that would allow him to seek an alternative to prison – as he has served half his sentence.

Under Italian law, the captain could enter into “semi-liberty” which would mean he could serve the rest of his sentence outside of jail.

Schettino will face a court hearing on 4 March to decide if he can leave prison.

The former captain’s initial trial revealed shocking details about potential drinking and dancing while on duty.

A Moldovan dancer and tour rep on the ship, Domnica Cemortan, had been accused of distracting the captain before the disaster.

Cemortan admitted that she had been in a romantic relationship with Schettino and was on board the ship before it sank, but denied distracting him.

Unconfirmed reports from the time alleged the pair had been drinking together.

Cemortan admitted she had been alone with the captain in his cabin, earlier on the doomed evening, and added that the pair kissed passionately, telling the MailOnline at the time.

The tour rep had previously worked on the ship for three weeks as a translator for Russian passengers, but later returned as a paying customer.

Her luggage and underwear were found submerged in Schettino’s cabin, but the tour rep claimed it was just a temporary arrangement.

HORROR HOLIDAY

In 2012, the Concordia accidentally took a detour during a voyage and steered straight into underwater rocks.

Schettino was found responsible for a 230-foot gash along the side of the ship that flooded the engine room and caused the Costa Concordia to capsize and sink.

As the water filled inside, the ship started to list on one side – and drift back towards the island despite the captain’s futile attempts to regain control.

Eventually, the ship toppled sideways in an unsteady position on a rocky underwater ledge – and started to sink.

The incident caused a scandal at the time, not least because the captain abandoned his crew and left them to fend for themselves.

Soon after the incident, coastguards flocked to the horror scene to rescue all 4,252 people onboard – which included 1,023 crew members and personnel.

After a six-hour rescue operation, most of the people were brought ashore without severe injuries.

Of the 32 people who died in the disaster, 12 were German.

A survivor of the sinking, Sandra Birnstiel, 51, from the northern German city of Luebeck, told German media: “I think Schettino has to serve his sentence, if only for the families of the victims.

“I don’t think it would be fair if he is allowed to go on day release all the time.”

Kelle Bryan defends Gino D’Acampo after controversial Loose Women appearance amid scandal

KELLE Bryan has defended under-fire Gino D’Acampo after he made a controversial appearance on Loose Women last year.

She insisted Gino is a ‘real pleasure’

Last week has the chef was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women who came forward to ITV News.

But Kelle has spoken out in defence of Gino, insisting he’s a “real pleasure” to be around.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun at the TV Choice awards, Hollyoaks star Kelle said of the his chaotic appearance: “To be honest, Gino’s always been funny and a big character.

“We’ve never experienced any issues with him – it’s always been a real pleasure.”

Their investigation into Gino found there were multiple claims of “unacceptable,” “distressing” and “horrendous” treatment while working with the TV star over more than 12 years.

And someone who doesn’t share Kelle’s opinion of Gino is Kim Woodburn, who did I’m a Celebrity with him in 2009.

Speaking to us this week, she branded him “vile”.

Kim claimed: “His language to the crew was disgusting. He cheated, called this producer a ‘f***ing bastard’ and ‘c***’, then refused to leave the set.

“We had to stop filming while two men took him by the arm and forced him off the set back to the camp. They should have thrown him off the show. Ghastly it was.

“He treated crew like garbage, he didn’t care. He’s reduced many people to tears over the years.”

Gino has denied all allegations put to him by ITV News, saying they are: “simply not in my nature”.

He added: “I do not recognise the version of events being put to me.”

Gino's statement in full

“I have been told by ITN news that allegations have been made about me acting inappropriately, some dating back over ten years ago.

“I have never been made aware of these matters previously and the allegations are firmly denied. I would not do anything that I thought would upset or distress anyone.

“This is simply not in my nature. I do not recognise the version of events being put to me.

“Not only have these allegations never been raised with me before, I have been repeatedly supported by executives at the highest level and was commissioned on prime-time programmes during the period in which it is now suggested I was acting inappropriately.

“I am a father, husband and have worked with well over 1,500 people on around 80 productions in my career, which I have been so proud of.

“I take such matters extremely seriously and the suggestion that I have acted in an improper way against is deeply upsetting.”

Donald Trump’s attacks on Taylor Swift & Meghan Markle are a bit deranged – but here’s why he’s got a point

Collage of Clemmie Hooper, Donald Trump, Taylor Swift, and Meghan Markle.

HOW is it that the world’s most famous property tycoon, with a portfolio worth over £5billion, allows Meghan Markle to live rent-free in his head?

For that, quite clearly, is what she does. (Nestled alongside Taylor Swift in the spare room.)

Donald Trump, maturely, wrote: ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT’ on social media when Taylor came out for his then-rival Kamala Harris[/caption]

“P****-grabbing” Donald Trump’s latest attack on two of the planet’s most famous women, one an influencer, one a pop star, are, on the surface, a bit deranged.

With his 6ft 3in, 240-ish lbs of imposing, orange, cholesterol’d hulk, the President’s latest unprovoked attack on Meghan ensured Mrs Windsor was on the receiving end of a pile-on from some of Donald’s more rabid fans.

That he chose to pick on a woman of colour, when much of marginalised America is living in fear, is especially wrong.

And I don’t condone it.

However, the point he was making was this: Pop stars and actresses have no place in the political realm.

And he is absolutely, categorically right.

Politics is a place for the democratically elected — it is NOT for the face of American Riviera Orchard, or the warbler of Shake It Off.

So during Sunday night’s Super Bowl, Donald, who is 78, re-posted a screenshot showing fan reactions to both him and Taylor.

The caption read “Trump gets massive cheers while Taylor gets booed — the world is healing.”

It might not be healing, but it is sick of being preached to by those with private jets.

This comes months after Donald, maturely, wrote: “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT” when Taylor came out for his then-rival Kamala Harris.

Those capital letters tell you more about the man than any 3,000-word think piece ever could.

And last week the world’s most powerful man took aim at his old foe, Meghan.

Her crime? Branding the twinkle-toed former Apprentice star “divisive and misogynistic”.

For those uncertain at the back, Donald isn’t exactly an arch feminist.

Of Kim Kardashian, he said: “Does she have a good body? No? A fat ass? Absolutely.”

Of Heidi Klum: “Sadly she’s no longer a 10”.

And of Angelina Jolie: “Everyone thinks she’s like this great beauty — and I’m not saying she’s an unattractive woman, but she’s not a beauty by any stretch of the imagination.”

And of Meghan: “She’s terrible.”

It came as he batted away calls for Harry to be deported over his visa and historical drug use, adding: “I won’t do that.

“He’s got enough problems with his wife.”

Trump said Prince Harry has ‘enough problems with his wife’ in a savage swipe at Meghan[/caption]

Yes, yes, a bit awful.

But I defy anyone with an ounce of humour not to laugh at what was quite clearly a joke.

At the ridiculousness of this clearly bright man who, deep down, knows he’s not God’s gift either, saying what many say behind closed doors.

For all of Donald’s malapropisms and ludicrous insults, he has his finger on the pulse.

He knows what his voters — those struggling economically, fighting a skewed healthcare system and job market — think.

They are sick of being told what to do and who to vote for by liberal elites.

Celebs largely all came out for Kamala — and look how that went.

People are sick of being told woke policies will make their lives better off.

Some are sick of global poverty campaigner Meghan, dressed in a £5,000 outfit, telling those struggling to put food on the table, how they should live.

Since Trump whirlwinded back into the White House, he’s been a man on a mission — getting things done and following through on campaign promises.

Much of his manifesto is deeply unpalatable to Meg and Tay.

While these well-meaning, generous-of-spirit women can issue sage Insta advice from their Californian towers, they remain unfathomably out of touch with the real world.

For millions of Americans, Donald is listening. And that’s why he’s having the last laugh.

GIVE X ELBOW

ONCE upon a time, X, formerly known as Twitter, was a fun little place where people could voice their views and make funny one-liners.

Now it’s an out and out cesspit.

That Kanye West gained over 800,000 followers after his disgusting anti-Semitic and misogynistic rants last week – before coming off it yesterday after claiming to have “hit women” – tells you everything you need to know about the place.

Avoid.

Facing up to insult

ON the subject of trolls, last week you may have seen I had a facelift at 40* and wrote, candidly, about it.

Overwhelmingly the response from readers was incredible, and super-kind.

I was in a rosy-glow of my post-facelift story until I looked at comments on The Sun’s Facebook page[/caption]

I had over 300 DMs on Instagram, and countless texts from friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances.

All was well in the rosy-glow of my post-facelift write-up.

Until, like the self-destructing fool that I am, I pushed it too far and I popped on to The Sun’s Facebook page to read a few below-the-line comments.

And quickly popped off again.

A special thank-you to Alison for this gem: “She looked in her fifties before and looks in her fifties now.” *42

Always spot on, Joanna

OVER the weekend I binged Amandaland, an absolute comic masterpiece of a series.

Well done BBC.

Joanna Lumley and Lucy Punch in Amandaland.
BBC
Well done BBC for Amandaland – but anything starring Joanna Lumley rarely misses[/caption]

But then again, anything starring the god-like Joanna Lumley, a woman whose dulcet, authoritative tones could lull me to sleep during root canal surgery, rarely misses.

Off-screen, I also like the cut of her jib.

Take a recent article, in which she was asked about the current trend for introspection and self-reflection.

You know, “journeys”.

Says Saint Joanna: “I can’t see the point.

“I’m as shallow as a puddle.

“I think we’re all here as little travellers and if, as a traveller, you spend all your time trying to find out who you are and thinking about yourself, you’re a crashing bore.

“That narcissism is a very short journey and at the end of it you haven’t nourished yourself much.”

Hear hear.

TREAT TREND LUNACY

NOW, I’m trusting this isn’t a piece affecting hardy, sensible, dog-loving Sun readers.

But near where I live, in leafy Richmond Park, there’s a worrying new form of helicopter parenting.

Apparently it is now unacceptable to offer a passing dog a treat, lest the dog be vegetarian, on a diet, lactose-intolerant, grain-free or “raw” – a creature that eats only uncooked (usually organic) meat.

Some ridiculous woman – wearing, obviously, a Chelsea life-jacket (gilet) and doubtless driving a Range Rover, veritably barked at me when I offered her cockapoo Barnaby a small turkey treat.

“Barnaby, no!!”, she bellowed.

“We don’t accept treats from strangers.”

She whisked poor Barnaby away, explaining in her trail the mutt “is on raw”.

Madness.

“SCIENTISTS reveal what would happen if an astronaut ejaculated in space.”

A headline I wasn’t expecting over my morning millennial breakfast (avo on toast). And big apologies if you’re eating yours.

Anyway, it’s good to know such crucial and timely research is being done by our most eminent professors.

CRAPO TOPS IT

A BIG thanks to reader Penny, who got in touch after I highlighted the unfortunately named Mr Crapo, a US senator.

Alas, the French military officer was scurrilously misnamed by Twitter rascals in a hoax post which was later re-posted by former Scots Tory leader Ruth Davidson.

“Mr Arse Biscuites” is actually a chap called Edouard Guillaud.

Mike Crapo for the win, then.

But the Rocket – who plays Jamie Clarke on Tuesday in the Welsh Open first round – has not exactly had a great start to 2025.

Especially as the Class of 92 star damaged his equipment in a moment of rage and needs a new one for his next appearance.

Asked what Walker could add to O’Sullivan’s game, Wales’ three-time world champion laughed: “Well, he’s doing well with Ronnie at the minute…

“Ronnie’s pulled out of the last five tournaments and snapped his cue.

“It’s all a masterplan to get him out of the way!”

Williams hit three centuries – 101, 100 and 117 – as eliminated Austrian amateur Florian Nuessle from the Llandudno tournament.

Yet the world No.5 says he only decided to play in the tournament the DAY before.

He explained: “I decided on Sunday morning.

“A lot of convincing from Lee Walker. Sunday morning is when I really decided I was coming.

“I was unsure all the way. My wife was saying I should go.

“They are probably right to be honest.

“Because it’s my home tournament. If I’m going to miss one, maybe I’ll miss a different one.

“I have missed a few events already this year. I’m not 100 per cent about Hong Kong yet.

“Just see how it goes. Sometimes you need a break from this game.”

Excruciating moment under fire Gino D’Acampo humiliated female dancer on latest ITV show by asking for a THREESOME

UNDER-fire Gino D’Acampo embarrassed a woman dancer while shooting his latest ITV show by suggesting a threesome.

Video obtained by The Sun also shows the chef, filming with co-host Fred Sirieix repeatedly asking if she “prefers Italian or French” men — despite her stressing she has a boyfriend.

Italian dad of three D’Acampo, 48, and Frenchman Fred were in Austria for their show Emissions Impossible, looking at how to live a healthier, greener life.

But the first attempt was put on ice amid several allegations as well as crew claiming they had to have counselling.

ITV bosses have since pulled all D’Acampo’s shows, with dozens of women complaining about his behaviour.

Yesterday The Sun told how he was branded “crude and vile” for sexual remarks about TV’s Holly Willoughby and Fearne Cotton.

He has so far “firmly denied” all allegations.

The October 2023 footage from Innsbruck focuses on a traditional Schuhplattler dance trio — the woman, her boyfriend and a second man — and their bum and thigh-slapping routine.

D’Acampo appears to boast to the men: “We are lovers, not fighters.

“I can get your girls without even moving a finger.

“I could court the girl without even moving.”

He says to the second man: “So you’re always crying?”

Simulating pleasuring himself, he adds: “By yourself. No girl.”

Referring to the slapping, he tells the boyfriend: “I think this is very kinky what you do — you’re a pervert.”

Holding what looks like a pint of beer, D’Acampo suggests he and Fred try dancing a try and asks: “Can we do it drunk?

“Yes? Well that’s OK then, we’re covered.”

Later he and Fred replaced the two Austrian men for their own comedy version.

During their performance, which is delivered to a bewildered-looking audience, D’Acampo is seen lifting Fred over his shoulders upside down, and pretending to slap him repeatedly in the genitals.

At the end, as the woman is stood between the two stars, D’Acampo is heard saying to her: “Why don’t you just have a threesome.”

She firmly replies: “Uh, no.”

He then addresses the audience and asks: “Everybody happy?”

The woman replies: “Not me.”

After the awkward exchanges, it is understood the family-based dance company complained to production firm Betty.

A member of production on Emissions Impossible said: “The show was subject to a number of complaints from contributors and crew.

“These were escalated to ITV when filming was halted after a week on location in Austria.

“This was supposedly due to Gino’s ill health.

“But there were already concerns about his behaviour when the shoot was pulled.

“As part of this show Gino and Fred were going to watch them rehearse, before joining them on stage for a performance in front of the audience.

You can see in the video that the dancers are visibly uncomfortable during filming and Gino made a number of sexually inappropriate comments to them

Member of production on Emissions Impossible

“The scene was obviously chosen for its comical nature, but Gino was briefed beforehand to be respectful.

“You can see in the video that the dancers are visibly uncomfortable during filming and Gino made a number of sexually inappropriate comments to them.”

After the incident, ITV and the production company carried out a review of their duty of care protocols.

Once new measures were put in place, they pressed ahead and completed a second bid at making the show in June of last year, and it aired in December.

However the section containing D’Acampo’s lewd chat with the young woman did not feature in the final edit.

Neither did the “comedy” dance, nor another section in which D’Acampo is heard having a conversation with one of the performers trying to help the show’s two presenters with their choreography.

He snaps at him: “Do you think that I really give a f*** about the dance?”

ITV are now coming under increasing pressure to explain what they knew of D’Acampo’s behaviour — some of which dates back years — and why no action was taken further.

They and production company Objective, who now own Betty, were approached for comment.

PHIL FIX SCOTCHES INQUIRY

By Paul Sims

ITV bosses have ruled out an investigation into Gino insisting lessons were learned following the Phillip Schofield scandal.

Critics want the broadcaster to explain what it knew and when — and why no action was taken.

But sources said the review into Schofield’s affair with a young runner on This Morning identified wider cultural failures which have now been addressed.

A Gino complainant said: “I’m appalled and flabbergasted, but not surprised. They continue to prioritise and defend what makes them money ahead of a responsibility to the public.”

A senior ITV insider said: “There would be no point in holding an investigation for it to identify the same issues that have since been addressed.”

ITV has axed repeats of Gino shows. He denies the claims.

Bianca Censori and Kanye West were ‘arguing’ before Grammys red carpet because she ‘wasn’t on board’ with naked stunt

BIANCA Censori and Kanye West appeared to argue before her infamous nearly-nude appearance on the Grammys red carpet, The U.S. Sun can report.

According to actress and social media star Riley Mae Lewis, who was stood feet away from the couple at last week’s music awards show, Kanye West and Bianca’s relationship looked strained.

Riley, who attended the 67th Grammy Awards on February 2, told The U.S. Sun she believed the pair may even have been arguing before their stunt – in which Bianca dropped her fur coat to the ground and revealed her nearly naked body.

She said the couple had a weird “energy” around them – and other red carpet goers noticed it too.

Riley claimed Kanye even attempted to flirt with her while he was stood next to his disrobed wife.

“I thought they might’ve been arguing or something,” she said.

“She didn’t look like was fully onboard with the scandal he wanted to create on the carpet.

“The energy between the two seemed off, and a lot of people on the carpet thought the exact same thing.

“It makes me concerned for what their relationship is like behind the scenes.

“When I saw him, he kind of gave me a flirty look even though Bianca was right next to him… the whole situation was weird.

“Bianca did not look like she wanted to be there, and Kanye looked like he was loving the attention, knowing the publicity it would later bring him.

“Now seeing everything that is going on with Kanye’s wild rants, it makes sense, possibly this is what led to the downfall of Kanye on Twitter.

“This all was definitely planned, no doubt.”

It comes after Kanye went on a vile anti-Semitic rampage on X, claiming he was a Nazi and loved Hitler.

He then declared he has “dominion” over his wife as he boasted about her Grammys look and called for his Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, who is in jail on sex trafficking charges, to be freed.

The rapper spent hours posting twisted messages on the platform posting deranged messages such as “Hitler was sooooooo fresh” and “I’m a Nazi.”

He even shared a sickening swatika t-shirt and called it his greatest “work of art”.

The Twitter rampage outraged people around the world with fans rushing to cancel their Yeezy orders and boycott his upcoming album.

Jewish tech tycoon Daniel Starr offered up $2 million for five minutes in a boxing ring with the shamed hip hop star telling The U.S. Sun he was “a disgrace to humanity”.

Friends star David Schwimmer called it “ignorant bile” and urged X boss Elon Musk to intervene.

On Sunday night, Elon slapped a NSFW warning on the account, which has now been deactivated.

Musk said in a post: “Given what he has posted, his account is now classified as NSFW. You should not be seeing that anymore.”

Riley, who has a combined 7 million followers across her different platforms, says Kanye could lose out on millions as a result.

“Twitter has always been one of Kanye’s primary platforms for controversy… he’s essentially cutting off a direct line to his most vocal and loyal supporters,” she said.

“As someone who has over 7 millions followers across social media, I know how much Twitter plays a role in engagement. 30% of most celebs social media income from monetization and brand deals comes from Twitter.

“He could possibly lose out on millions, given that he just launched his new Yeezy commercial at the Super Bowl, and now won’t be using Twitter.

“Given Kanye’s history of unpredictable behavior online, stepping away from Twitter is the right thing for him to do inadvertently though – no one wants to hear the racist stuff that comes out his mouth.”

The U.S. Sun reached out to a rep for Kanye for comment.
