American Airlines jet bursts into flames at Denver Airport with horrified passengers forced to escape onto wing

AN AMERICAN Airlines plane has burst into flames after it landed – with passengers forced to evacuate onto the wing of the jet in dramatic images.

The plane’s engine suddenly caught fire with smoke seen billowing across the airport after it diverted to land in Denver on Thursday.

American Airlines Flight 1006 from Colorado Springs on a Boeing 737-800 landed in Denver around 5.15pm local time (11.15pm GMT), diverting from its planned destination of Dallas after the crew reported engine vibrations, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Several dramatic videos of passengers standing on the wing of the plane before evacuating as smoke poured out the engine were posted on social media.

“After landing safely and taxiing to the gate at Denver International Airport (DEN), American Airlines Flight 1006 experienced an engine-related issue,” the airline said in a statement.

“The 172 customers and six crew members deplaned and are being relocated to the terminal. We thank our crew members, (Denver) team and first responders for their quick and decisive action with the safety of everyone on board and on the ground as the priority,” the airline added.

The FAA said it would investigate the incident.

Boeing declined to comment, referring queries to American Airlines and investigators.

The engine fire is the latest in a series of high-profile aviation incidents that have raised questions about US aviation safety, including the January 29 mid-air collision of an American Airlines regional jet and an Army helicopter that killed 67 people.

Ultra-rare 70s Ferrari with just 6,000 miles on clock and 188mph top speed goes on auction – it could be yours for £170k

A VINTAGE Ferrari could be yours in a matter of weeks as the red 1970s sports car goes to auction.

With only one owner and less than 6,000 miles on the clock, the 1977 Ferrari 512 BB is set to be snapped up quickly.

The iconic red wide body Italian sports car is one of just 101 right-hand drive versions supplied to the UK.

And this one could be the rarest of them all after being uprated with wider wheels, having engine modifications and reshaped bodywork supplied by Maranello Concessionaires.

Vince Mezzullo, an employee from the dealer became friends with the owner and maintained the vehicle.

The sleek road car is finished in the classic Ferrari colour of Rosso Chiaro with black hide and carpets.

Under the hood is an impressive 5 litre version of the 12-cylinder boxer.

The motor has a hair-raising top speed of 188mph.

It is said to be inspired by the factory sanctioned 512 BB Competizione cars which were campaigned by Charles Pozzi and NART at the 1978 Le Mans 24-hours.

The Ferrari will be going on sale on April 9 at 9am.

H&H Classics will be running the auction at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, in Cambridgeshire.

John Markey, motorcar specialist at H&H Classics, said: “This Ferrari ‘Wide Body’ was commissioned by a serial Ferrari owner and while other Ferrari’s came and went, and not to mention other high-performance machines, this Prancing Horse always remained in his collection as a firm favourite.

“This ‘Wide Body’ enjoys a host of bespoke cosmetic and mechanical enhancements and has been in ownership of the Morello family from new.

“It is a unique BB and has ultra-low mileage, making it worthy of close inspection.”

The rare Ferrari is expected to sell for between £150,000 and £170,000.

But of course, it is not the only vintage vehicle that will be under the gavel at Duxford Airfield.

H&H will also be overseeing the sales of a 1924 Rolls-Royce Springfield, a 1966 TVR Griffith, a 1973 Lamborghini Espada, and many others.

The more modern offerings include a 1999 Lotus Elise 111S, a 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo, a 2010 Ford Focus RS, and a 2000 Subaru Impreza P1.

Meanwhile, a British classic from the swinging 60s is set to be auctioned off in Milan, Italy.

The highly coveted 1965 DB Short-Chassis Volante could be yours for a staggering £600,000 as the sleek vintage Aston Martin goes on sale.

It is the rarest series production convertible Aston Martin ever made, being one of just 37.

RM Sotheby’s will be running an auction for the highly-sought after vehicle.

Images from the showroom show that this particular model is in classic British racing green with beige leather interiors and a convertible roof.

RM Sotheby’s will be hosting the auction in Milan where it is expected to fetch between £550,000 and £600,000.

Mercedes reveals its new luxury EV with ‘superscreen’ passengers can play video games or watch Netflix on while on move

MERCEDES has revealed its brand new luxury EV that comes with a “superscreen” that passengers can play video games or watch Netflix on.

The German carmaker launched its new CLA on Thursday which kickstarts a whole family of cars for the iconic company.

The CLA will come with two electric powertrain options: the rear-drive “250+” as well as the faster, all-wheel-drive “350+”.

800-volt architecture is the backbone of the motor and, using an 85kWh battery, it can deliver a whopping 492 miles of range in the 250 version.

If you opt for the faster 350, the range is reduced slightly to 479 miles.

Rapid charging capabilities mean you can take a quick 10-minute coffee break at a 350kW DC fast charger and gain more than 200 miles of travel, reports Autocar.

An extra 12 minutes on top of that will give you a battery that’s 80 per cent full.

The 350 produces 349bhp and can go from 0-62mph in just 4.9 seconds, while the 250 produces 268bhp and gets you to 62mph in around 6.7 seconds.

Both are limited to 130mph and employ Mercedes’ new two-speed automatic gearbox.

In this state-of-the-art transmission, the first gear is designed specifically for steady acceleration in urban areas, while the second helps deliver power at higher speeds, making it perfect for motorway cruising.

There are also up to four levels of regenerative braking available, and you get a comfort-oriented suspension setup as standard.

It is designed to help improve steering response and reduce road noise from the EV as a result.

Inside, the CLA takes on a sportier character and offers luxury material choices for its furnishings.

Central to the motor is the latest iteration of the Mercedes Superscreen, which has up to three digital displays spread across the front dashboard.

These include a 10.25in one for the driver’s instruments, a 14.6in centrally-placed infotainment one, and an optional 14in screen for the passenger seat.

If you opt for all three, the screen ends up spanning the entire width of the front of the car.

On here, passengers can play video games such as Fortnite while on the move or even stream shows and films via Netflix or other services.

This is all thanks to Mercedes’ latest MB.OS operating system, which also features the newest version of the German automaker’s virtual assistant.

Utilising a range of artificial intelligence functions including ChatGPT, the assistant provides more accurate answers to questions than before and has a new short-term memory function.

In a strange futuristic twist, it also “recognises” emotions and responds accordingly, changing colours to reflect your mood.

CLA LINEUP TO EXPAND LATER THIS YEAR

If you don’t opt for the Superscreen, the passenger screen will be replaced with a glass LED-backlit panel which matches the interior lighting of the motor.

Other bonus treats include a panoramic roof as standard, a wireless phone charging cable, four additional USB slots, and an optional 850-watt Burmester surround sound system.

While there’s only 405 litres of boot space, 55 litres less than the old CLA, the EV comes with a hidden trunk under the front hood that adds another whopping 101 litres of storage space.

Mercedes is also planning to diversify the CLA lineup towards the end of this year, first by introducing a smaller 58kWh battery version in addition to a trio of 48-volt hybrids.

The hybrids will come with a 1.5L turbocharged four-pot, a miniscule 1.3kWh battery, and an eight-speed DCT gearbox.

They will be good for EV-only travel up to a speed of 62mph, and are offered with either all-wheel-drive or just front-wheel-drive.
