The biggest belief behind Holika Dahan is that the father of Prahlad, an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, King Hiranyakashyap, did not want his son to worship Lord Vishnu. He considered himself more powerful than God and wanted Prahlad to worship only him. But devotee Prahlad did not waver from his devotion to his God.
Hiranyakashyap made many attempts to kill his son, but every time Prahlad was saved by the grace of Lord Vishnu. Ultimately, he decided to burn Prahlad in the fire with the help of his sister Holika. Holika had the boon that fire could not burn her. She sat in the burning fire with Prahlad in her lap. But by the grace of Lord Vishnu, Prahlad remained safe, while Holika was burnt to ashes.
The festival of Holi is a symbol of Indian cultural unity, where people of all religions, castes and classes play Holi together with enthusiasm without any discrimination.
