Shocking pictures show a plane upside-down on the runway after crashing at Toronto Pearson Airport.

The Delta flight, which had flown from Minnesota in the US to Toronto, Canada, crashed on Monday at about 2.45pm local time.

Emergency services are at the scene, while an airport spokesperson said all 80 passengers and crew have been accounted for.

Canadian news outlet CTV News says at least eight people were injured in the crash.

NBC News reports one of those injured was in critical condition and has been airlifted to a nearby trauma centre.

Pictures taken at the scene show passengers being led out of the upside-down plane and on to the icy airport runway.

Smoke could be seen rising from the fuselage as firefighters doused it in water.

Constable Sarah Patten of the Peel Regional Police in Ontario told Reuters: ‘It is my understanding that most of the passengers are out and unharmed but we’re still trying to make sure so we’re still on scene investigating.’

She added that ‘we don’t know the circumstances surrounding’ the plane crash at the moment.

The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA said some of its members were working on board the flight.

In a statement it said ‘reports are there are no fatalities’.

A spokesperson for Toronto Pearson Airport said on social media: ‘Toronto Pearson is aware of an incident upon landing involving a Delta Airlines plane arriving from Minneapolis.

‘Emergency teams are responding. All passengers and crew are accounted for.’

The Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) told the BBC the Transportation Safety Board of Canada will lead an investigation into the cause of the crash.

In a statement, Delta told Metro: ‘Delta is aware of reports of Endeavor Flight 4819 operating from Minneapolis/St. Paul to Toronto-Pearson International Airport as involved in an incident.

‘We are working to confirm any details and will share the most current information on news.delta.com as soon as it becomes available.’
