‘DA undecided on whether to remain in the GNU’ – Steenhuisen

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen said the party hasn’t decided on the future of its participation in the Government of National Unity (GNU).

“I can’t answer your question about whether we’re in or out yet. At this stage, we’re waiting to see how things unfold,” the DA leader said.

“Whether we stay in the GNU or not, that is the matter for FEDEX to decide. We had an initial FEDEX over the course of Thursday and Friday but we have not made a decision one way or the other, the FEDEX will continue to meet and assess the current situation,” he said.

Steenhuisen says DA had a FEDEX meeting over GNU

“There could be a minority government that would function from parliamentary sitting to parliamentary sitting, with uncertainty about whether there is a majority,” Steenhusien said.

“That’s no way to run a government. We need to ensure that whatever we’re doing is in the best interest of the country.”

On Friday, African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Fikile Mbalula called the DA arrogant, saying the ball is in their court if they want to leave or stay in GNU. , the government, led by the ANC, passed the 2025 National Budget without the DA’s support.

“The ball is in the DA’s court,” he said. They’ve chosen their path, and they must analyse and decide on the implications,” .

“If you say you don’t want a budget at all costs, you walk, and nobody said you must walk. It cannot be our burden. They’ve decided,” Mbalula said.

Do you think the DA should leave the government of national unity?
