There was a huge worry for Phil Mitchell’s (Steve McFadden) loved ones in Wednesday’s EastEnders after they were told he had ‘gone’ from his mental health unit.
Phil has been receiving treatment off-screen after a devastating suicide attempt during the BBC soap’s 40th anniversary episodes last month.
During his stay, he has declined calls and visits from those closest to him, but after his granddaughter Lexi Pearce (Isabella Brown) learned the truth about his recent ill health on Wednesday, she insisted they all went straight down to the unit and persuade him to see them.
However, upon arriving at the front desk with her grandfather Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick) and Phil’s friends Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) and Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), staff informed them he was no longer there.
They were left confused, wondering of Phil’s whereabouts and if he was safe.
Fans will get some answers on Thursday, with a special episode documenting Phil’s four-week stay in the unit.

Spoilers have already revealed that we will see Phil finally confront his inner trauma and attempt to understand what may have contributed to his depression and symptoms of psychosis.
After he makes huge strides, Phil’s support worker Yasmin then helps him see that he is ready to leave the unit and he will discharge himself.
The episode will also feature a guest appearance from actor Keith Allen, who will play fellow patient Gaz.

Executive producer Chris Clenshaw previously said of the episode: ‘As Phil struggles to begin treatment, we explore how his relationship with fellow patient Gaz, helps Phil to take the first step in his road to recovery.
‘Keith and Steve’s performances are both phenomenal, and thoughtfully and sensitively portray the complex realities of mental health recovery and the impact of hypermasculinity.’
Next week, fans will also see Phil return home to Walford – but things are not totally plain sailing when he finds himself at odds with Nigel after making a huge mistake.
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One or stream first from 6am on iPlayer.
