British singer Ed Sheeran’s impromptu street performance in Bengaluru, India, was abruptly stopped by local police.
As reported, Sheeran had taken to Church Street to surprise fans with a rendition of his hit song “Shape of You,” on February 10, 2025. However, his performance was cut short when a police officer unplugged his microphone due to a lack of permission for the event.
According to Deputy Commissioner Shekar T Tekkannavar, permission for the street performance had been denied because Church Street is one of the city’s busiest areas and could become congested.
“I refused to give permission because Church Street gets very crowded. That is the reason he was asked to vacate the place,” Bengaluru police official Shekar T Tekkannanavar was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
Despite this, Sheeran claimed on Instagram that he had received prior approval for the performance.
“It wasn’t just us randomly turning up. All good though,” he wrote.
The incident sparked widespread reaction on social media, with many fans expressing disappointment and criticizing local authorities. Some argued that such performances would not significantly disrupt traffic or other issues in the area.
Following the incident, Sheeran performed at a scheduled concert later that night in Bengaluru.
Sheeran is currently on a 15-day tour in India as part of his second visit within two years. His tour includes performances in multiple cities across India before moving on to China and the UAE.
