Elon Musk Blames “Massive Cyberattack” for Widespread X Outages

Elon Musk has attributed recent outages on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), to a “massive cyberattack.”

The outages, which occurred on March 10, 2025, left tens of thousands of users unable to access their accounts or load content.

Musk stated that while X faces daily cyber threats, this particular attack was executed with significant resources, suggesting involvement by a large, coordinated group or possibly a nation-state.

Addressing concerns on his X account, Musk stated: “There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing…”

The first wave of outages began around 6 a.m. ET, with over 40,000 users reporting issues by 10 a.m. ET. A second spike in complaints occurred in the afternoon, affecting users primarily in the U.S., Europe, and parts of Asia.

The outages were most severe along the U.S. coasts, and the majority of issues were reported on the X app.

“We’re not sure exactly what happened,” Musk said during a Fox Business interview Monday afternoon. “But there was a massive cyberattack to try to bring down the X system, with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area.”

Musk did not give any further details about the origin of the attack, including whether he believes it was connected to the Ukrainian government.

It’s noted that hackers can mask IP addresses, making it difficult to pinpoint the true origin.

Frustrated users turned to alternative platforms like Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon during the outages
