Evanescence returns and unleashes ‘Afterlife’ for new Netflix show

Evanescence is back with a bang, delivering a haunting new track, Afterlife, for Netflix’s animated adaptation of Devil May Cry.

EVANESCENCE’S AFTERLIFE IN DEVIL MAY CRY

The song, released on 28 March, marks the band’s return to the studio since their 2021 album, The Bitter Truth.

It also brings their signature gothic rock sound to the much-anticipated series, which premieres on 3 April, according to Billboard.

Amy Lee, Evanescence’s iconic lead vocalist, collaborated with Mako (Alex Seaver) and producer Nick Raskulinecz to craft Afterlife.

EVANESCENCE AND THE MEANING BEHIND THE SONG

Speaking about the track, Lee explained, “For me, the song is both pain and resolve.

It’s from the perspective of someone who has lost so much but has reached a point of being past fear—no hesitation in their quest when there’s nothing left to lose.”

The song captures themes of loss and redemption, resonating deeply with the show’s storyline, according to Screen Rant.

THE ‘DEVIL MAY CRY’ STORY

The Netflix series follows Dante, a demon hunter navigating sinister forces threatening to open portals between human and demon realms.

Showrunner Adi Shankar described the series as “a melancholic rock & roll Shakespearean tragedy.”

He praised Evanescence’s contribution: “Amy Lee’s voice carries pain, power, and transcendence in a single note. Their sound is alchemy—gothic grandeur meets raw vulnerability.”

The lyric video for Afterlife premiered on 27 March, offering fans a glimpse into the dark and electrifying world of Devil May Cry, according to Comic Book.

AFTER LIFE

Featuring intense drumming, soaring vocals, and visuals from the series, the track perfectly complements the show’s themes of good versus evil.

Lyrics like “See you in the afterlife” hint at supernatural undertones and mortality—a nod to Dante’s struggles.

Lee revealed how the collaboration came about: “Netflix reached out through Mako.

We’d worked together before, during the pandemic, on a Lindsey Stirling track.

He shared an initial idea for Afterlife, and it snowballed into something bigger. We got the band involved and took it all the way.”

THE CREATIVE PROCESS

The process was fast-paced but rewarding, showcasing Evanescence’s ability to adapt their sound while staying true to their roots.

Fans of both Evanescence and Devil May Cry are thrilled by this partnership.

The band’s gothic rock style aligns seamlessly with the show’s dark aesthetic. Shankar emphasised that this wasn’t just about picking any band.

It was about finding the band that could make this moment immortal.

EVANESCENCE HITS

For South African fans, this collaboration is a nostalgic throwback to Evanescence’s early hits like Bring Me to Life and My Immortal.

It also introduces younger audiences to their emotive sound through a modern medium.

With Netflix accessible in South Africa, viewers can dive into Dante’s world while enjoying Evanescence’s powerful music.

MUSIC AND STORYTELLING

As excitement builds for Devil May Cry’s release on 3 April, Afterlife sets the tone for what promises to be an unforgettable experience.

Whether you’re a fan of anime, video games, or gothic rock, this collaboration offers something unique—a fusion of music and storytelling that transcends boundaries.
